Meet the Hyundai i20N!
The third generation Hyundai i20 launched in 2020 and immediately set itself apart from its predecessor with dynamic looks, upgraded safety and connectivity features and electrifying 48-volt mild hybrid powertrains to maximise fuel economy.
It was quickly followed up in 2021 with the introduction of the N Line variant that combines advanced technologies with sportiness enhanced through exterior and interior design elements.
And of course, we also have this i20 N performance variant - a model inspired by the championship-winning i20 Coupe WRC rally car to bring racetrack performance into the lives of consumers.
So how does the regular i20 compare to similarly sized rivals like the Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo and Honda Jazz? And is it worth paying a premium for performance with the i20 N? Let’s find out...

I20N is awesome, love mine. Can easily get 45mpg on a long run. Just a point, it does not have electronically controlled suspension as mentioned in this review.

I think it’s very sad the i20 N is not offered in Romania 😢. However, it is sold in neighbouring Bulgaria and Hungary. I think it’s very unfair that Romania doesn’t get the i20 N, and yet Bulgaria and Hungary do. If there are any viewers watching in Romania who know anything more about this, please tell me.

Due to job change I now do a 120 mile round trip per day, if I drive sensibly on the motorway I can get over 52mpg on E5 fuel. However, it does get quite tiresome as it's not really made for commuting and the suspension does get quite frustrating over time. It also does this really annoying crunching when doing tight manoeuvres when it's cold, apparently this is down to the LSD and does go when it's warmed up but that irritates the hell out of me. Also everyone around you will see you as a target and drive like idiots, possibly to somehow prove that their car is faster or something. The traction this thing gives when pushing on is incredible though.

It is a bit weird doing a review of all variants lumped together. The USP for the i20N is that it is a light-weight throw-back hot-hatch, with manual gears, real handbrake, with tons of kit thrown as standard and a wipe down interior. As such it is presently pretty much unique at this price point. If you don’t want that, then you would not even consider it. The i20N is not marketed as a family wagon. If you want that, then go elsewhere. My partner has a black one as her long distance commuter and she thinks that it is magic…. She has no need then to batter my RS3 …. She is a terrible driver.

@@hpman911 Maybe that kind of over-designed looks are a thing in Asia and US. You look at this and you can't tell if it's Toyota, Honda, Kia, Hyundai or an oversized Samsung vacuum cleaner. Hands down to Mazda, only they seem to realize the importance of subtle design, standardized over the range and brand recognition and tradition. As long as they don't sort the design, both interior and exterior, they are just going to be vehicles for A to B, not a car with emotions involved.

@@petarmaksimovic4048 Have you ever actually driven a Hyundai i20N ? They are a fantastic little practical pocket rocket which gives great driver involvement at a very affordable cost. This to me was way above the question of looks which are only in the eye of the beholder anyhow. In addition they come with a 5 year guarantee.

@@hpman911 As I said, A to B guys. Looks (emotion) comes first, driving second. There are a lot of good looking cars that drive well or better but are designed by people with car sentiment.
