The old classic way of picking corn. Today we are using a New Idea 323 corn picker to harvest some fresh corn for the milk cows.
Plus, I give an update on our short day corn.

Corn in our neck of the woods didn't do so well this year here in northern Ohio. One year dad was out picking corn with our single row picker and came upon a stalk that was 15 feet high with three ears. Of course, he pulled it out of the ground and brought it to the house and placed it alongside the garage. It stayed there for about four days. Those New Ideas were pretty popular back in the day.

Growing up, we had a NI 2 row picker that we used for high moisture corn. We had a Farmhand Grinder/Blower that we would grind most of the loads and blow into our silo. But in the meantime, we had a McKee (?) 3pt mounted grinder/blower. We would grind a gravity box load and blow into an old chopper box next to the barn. Once we filled, leveled and opened the silo, we'd quit grinding into the chopper box. Now, all we do is earlage with our SP Harvester as well.

When I was about 12 years old I would help my neighbor with chores and one of those was to put ear corn into a corn "crib". He pulled a one row New Idea with an old H Farmall. Made for a long day but it got the job done. So been there done that. That was about 50 years ago. Slick modification on the picker. That is some good looking corn.

Pretty good time with that old 323. Our last two or three 23s and now we have a 324 too row. We use your corn to feed our beef cattle here and we have a market for some for people to feed wildlife and so on so we still pick and shell both. In the fall we shell enough at the end of corn picking season 2 last through the winter and then to keep her food business going in the summertime and up until picking time will dry shell out of the crib with a portable sheller oh no we probably pick one we put through the combine still here

The first farm I worked on had 40 milk cows and 500 sheep. We filled a wooden crib 8×14×60 plus 3 or 4 wire cribs. We ran a 324 New Idea to pick and then we had another 324 with a shelling unit that we shelled corn for the sheep. We used a 4020 diesel power shift to run both pickers. We stored the shell corn in the chopper wagons, gravity wagons and kicker wagons lined with plywood.

Nice job on the auger in the husking bed; seems to work fine. My uncle Ed picked our corn with his Farmall M pulling a 2-row New Idea picker in the late '50s. When he traded up to a new Farmall 400, he bought a 2-row mounted unit (probably a 2-MH). I always enjoyed hauling loads of ear corn to the crib with our AC WD-45. Thanks for bringing back so many wonderful farming memories.
