That's really interesting. As you know the diagonal of the neg determines the 'normal' focal length. So for a 6x7 ideally you's have a 90mm enlarging lens. I for one would have problems with the extra height that would need in the darkroom/bathroom if I was attaching to a tripod. That said, the built in filters would be useful. I've never really understood why people bother with physical filters when they could just use a colour head!

This is spectacular! I already have an enlarger, but it's a 4x5 beast, so this one is ultra appealing since all of the filtering is so easily done and I don't need the larger size options all the time. I didn't even think about the ease of use for split grade printing, too. If they don't price this way beyond their existing enlarger kit, I'm so supporting this.

Like some of other comments have said, this might be a game-changer for those of us who want to start printing at home, but have limited space. Even better, it seems like it's suitable for RA-4 colour printing too. Just think - it would be possible to make real optical colour prints with little more than this enlarger, a suitable tripod, and a small drum processor. If using a little drum processor instead of open trays, then doing colour at home would take up even less room than black and white developing.
@snapsnappist4529
@snapsnappist4529 3 жыл бұрын
I came across this video. Aside from the slight learning curve regarding how to evaluate and correct for colour casts, the actual method of processing the print (and equipment needed) is far simpler than many would assume. I can't see any reason why this method wouldn't work for black and white as well. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rrl4p9GCuarJZas.html

The main thing I got excited about was the fact I can change BW contrast or RA4 filtering without touching the enlarger. I love that! Easily the most exciting feature! Given that I do have the space for a conventional enlarger, I do prefer something stout like that. I hope that Intrepid are either working on a copystand/gantry of their own or are working on having a set of solid recommendations. That's really the weakest link I think. I also am hoping the timer is hackable to some degree :) since I've been waiting for the Maya to come (I think we may finally see it soon) and it has a ton of features I'm excited about as well. I assume Intrepid will be updating their 4x5 enlarger with some of these features too, though the Main Event for me would be an 8x10. They've teased about that they are at least looking into something like that. To mere say that would be a game changer is a dramatic understatement to how big of a deal that would be. So all told, I'm really REALLY excited to see all the work Intrepid is putting into making a proper modern enlarger for the 2020's. I love the old conventional ones but my goodness - again not having to fiddle with dials and filters on the enlarger head itself and not needing a super hot and bright bulb, it's such a dramatic step forward.

Weird question, but I'm wondering how the B&W contrast filters work with LED lights? When you're projecting onto paper, do they project the same colors you'd see with the physical filters? I've heard with color enlargers in order to get B&W contrast, you need to reverse the colors.. Right?

Love the compactness of the simulated contrast filters, color filters, safelight, and timer in one small unit. Having to use a tripod though makes this more challenging to setup than I would prefer. What I think is especially promising about this is that this is the first *new* enlarger to offer on the market in a couple decades. The fact that it includes all the new features you might expect from bringing the technology up to date (tri-color LED light source, programmable electronic controller/timer) and is made by the same company who can sell you a new 4x5 camera for a couple hundred quid is just icing on the cake. For myself, I'm a little disappointed to see it's not 4x5 capable, but then I guess that's due to the cost of a light panel big enough and even enough to print from 4x5 negatives. Or maybe the final Kickstarter version will be, but this is the light panel they could get up front for the prototype test units... If I didn't already have an Omega D2 with (almost ready to use) color head, I'd be all over that Kickstarter...

What a great collaboration! I'll be interested to hear your comparison of this process to your standard workflow if you think it worthwhile. Do you think you'd appreciate the extra room in your main darkroom and would a system like this replace any of your current equipment? Do you think we'll get to see some color enlargements from you using this system in the future? Keep up the great work! Love your videos. I just bought two enlargers a few months back and I'm getting up the courage to get back in the darkroom myself (just need to set up a space for it). Something like this system would honestly have worked better for my current living situation (studio apartment) but alas I already have the big bois.

I'm going to take it in my darkroom and use it also. I like the timer a lot. Very accurate. And as you say gives me the option to try colour and also a diffuser for black and white.

I am curious as to how you got your enlarger aligned? I imagine that might be a bit of an issue/hassle because you would have to align it perfect perpendicular to your workbench?

@@rhett1734 easy enough. Don't forget I was making small 10x8 prints. Had I been enlarging much bigger prints and had to use a wider aperture for then maybe I would have needed some alignment laser to get it right. But I saw no problems with edge to edge at a 10x8 print.

This one isn’t out yet. The kick starter with start in March of this year. It’s an all on one solution for 35mm and medium format up to 6x7. The one on the intrepid site that you can buy now it’s designed to handle 4x5 large format and requires you to provide your own camera body and lens. Hope that clears it up.

I've a question: Isn't it too light? Doesn't it move standing on a tripod? Classic enlargers used to be very heavy and came with heavy stands built-in. They were standing as steady as rocks; does this stay as steady as those?
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss 3 жыл бұрын
You don't touch the enlarger once you're ready to project light. You just stay still and it won't move.
