I hate to be a wet blanket. I’m on the wrong side of 60 and just got what should be my last 2 kittens given my age and the up to 20 year life expectancy of cats. If I do outlive them, I will be adopting old cats from a shelter. I hope the grandchildren gifting the kittens to their grandparents offer the kittens a home when the time comes to say goodbye to their grandparent.

With all good intentions to make grandma/grandpa happy, the owner should outlife the animal if possible and not the other way around. Plus, as cute as they are, kitten and young cats can cause quite a bit of stress, especially for old people. For them a older, calmer cat would be a better choice.

And this sometimes for more than 20 years. - It will be neglected or ends up in a shelter! Don't treat pets like things! So don't just buy one and put them in a present box! Go to a shelter instead and get to know each other, so the pet too has a chance to find out of it wants to be your friend at all! Everything else ist far too often irresponsible and not seldomly ruins while lifes. If you doubt it, ask at your shelter, they will have a lot of storys to tell you about it!
