Volunteers and animal advocates say the City of Los Angeles' six animal shelters are in crisis with overcrowding, filthy cages and few resources. Staycee Dains, the new general manager of L.A. Animal Services, has taken the position with hopes for a fix. She sits down with Kacey Montoya to discuss those plans in her first live television interview, only on KTLA 5. Aired Sept. 23, 2023.

Why giving breeder licenses to anyone while over 7 million pets are being killed in shelters every year?? Breeding and selling animals should be illegal with jail time to stop this insanity 🤬🤬🤬🤬

God bless her for taking on such a HUGE task. People who sit back and watch and do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help out in any way have no room to complain much less criticize. I wish her all of luck.

Do you ? I am doing all I can and my self and another volunteer search shelters sites to identify animals in needs and share with contacts we know and it can be done at home. If we all do this. On Ms Dains, she did answer the specific concerns we found in researching the shelters.

Changing to no kill shelters is great, but how about new construction and funding to handle the "extra" animals?

I live in Oklahoma and many people are buying purebred dogs and breeding to make a quick buck. There are dogs that have terrible breeding issues...like French Bull dogs. This needs to be stopped.

I hope more people #adoptnotshop so that animals can find their forever homes and love they deserve. Our oldest rescue is 25 and our youngest is 1. BLESSING TO ALL helping to improve animal lives🫶🏽🦜❤️🐈‍⬛🐶🐇💕

I took in my sisters dog when he was just a 1 year old puppy, now my Tanner is 12. It was tge best thing I coukd have ever done. Instead of surrendering him or giving him to someone else i chose to take him. It has been a year since i have taken him to the vet but idc even if I was evicted, lost my home and ended up on the street my pooch will always be with me, no one else. Tanner is my life. He is the cutest four legged fur son i have ever had. I also use holistic approaches if i don't have enough money to take him to the vet. My dad just passed away three weeks ago and he loved Tanner too. I just feel so bad for these dogs all over the country. Wishing i could take them all and play with them all day. Poor things 😢

God bless you. Kept my six dogs in unbearable conditions last few years, cooked organic for them while all I could eat was cheap pasta. Nothing other than death can be an excuse to give up on your dogs. I hope you will make it through very soon.

unfortunately, the animal population problem will always be a problem just like the homeless.. there never will never be a solution ,through no fault of anyone .

It's impossible to get a pet spayed at the shelters . Vets will do them for around $300 for cats usually more for dogs. That's expensive for most owners.

I wish her much success and I hope she has resources. If you ask me, there are too many pit bulls in shelters taking up resources and space when those dogs should be banned. Some cities and some countries ban them for very good reasons. But be that as it may, I hope we can do something to help the animals in the shelters

Not just dog breeders, people who has dogs they have to sterilize the dogs is more common than we think! People should get a big fine

I empathize with the shelter. Dog breeders need to be regulated business need to get license and for tax purposes, and also community health and safety. What if they carry rabies

Why didn't you demand for breeder's licenses to be stopped!!! Tackle the big issues and stop being such "kind" people. If it was your dog in the shelter or on skid row geting absolutely no help and put down because of overcrowded issues, you would be speaking another tune! Show strength HOSTS!

Free Koda!! He is wrongfully being locked up. If you go on a walk and you get sexually assaulted, and your dog attacks your attacker they will take your dog away! Staycee how dare you say the woman wasn’t sexually assaulted were you there? You’ve had him locked up for 7 months and aren’t allowing for anyone to walk or work with koda a few times a week. What is your problem? You clearly don’t care about the animals!

Your answers were positive but your actions have been disappointing. Stop giving breeders licenses. Get dogs out of black boxes. Create more affordable spay neuter options. GIVE MEDS FOR ANIMALS WHO ARE SICK TO ADOPTERS! Staff turning away interested parties to dogs “in the back”. So unfair. Have an onboarding process where you ask people WHAT they are looking for and match them with that animal. I plan to start volunteering and I really hope my suggestions are heard. Because i have been told you do not listen to anything any rescues have suggested. Shame. Fixing this doesn’t happen over night but it sure doesn’t take this long for implementations.

STOP GOING TO MEXICO AND BRINGING DOGS HERE. Geez. They blabber about overcrowding but do everything possible to make them overcrowded. Edit: stop pricing desirable breeds way higher than non desirable breeds.
