Mike Gurr reviews the 2018 Lexus NX.
The Lexus NX arrived in 2014 as an edgy compact crossover based on the Toyota RAV4 platform. Similar in size to the Toyota cousin but that is where the similarities stop. This is a Lexus through and through, with above average interior refinement, and now with a large 10-inch screen. The exterior gets a few minor tweaks, the edgy exterior remains. Under the hood is the same turbocharged 2.0L direct and port injected 4-cylinder with 235hp. The biggest change to the drive is the improved suspension, something this model needed, plus an optional adaptive suspension first found in the larger RX. The handling has been improved and gone is the mushy, rather poky ride in favour of a more defined ride.
The Lexus NX is now called the NX300.

I love the look of the NX. Especially in that Lexus white. I saw one in white and it literally stole my attention very edgy looking great design. Great buy and great package all around.

Overall great review! I think the only show stopper is no Android Auto / Apple Carplay and the trackpad? Based on all of us using touchscreen phones and tablet would probably wait for them to catch up with other more intuitive systems? It is like my BMW, which is not as convenient as my daughters VW.

It's a ton of fun to drive. I'm not an SUV guy by any means but this is probably the first SUV I've actually had a ton of fun driving, feels quite a bit like a car in a way because of how it drives (Which to me is a good thing!).

Forgot to mention when talking about boot sace that the NX has a space saver spare and some underfloor storage. The BMW mentioned should have a bigger boot because, you guessed it, no spare wheel. If you think no spare is acceptable, well and good, but it is a consideration.

Hey Mike (and Zack for that matter), Just wondering, if I was looking for a nice small SUV with premium amenities and comfort, would it be worth my while to go with an NX or go for a RAV4 Limited? If power and sportiness were less of a priority. I'm going to guess that high-end RAV would be roomier? Maybe ride a little better, be a little quieter, maybe less expensive?

+Rob Mock they are both based on the same platform so if you want a quiet and luxury SUV you can opt for this or maybe a loaded hybrid rav4

It's not only a bigger screen but a newer system in line with the new LS / LC, too bad Lexus is still stubborn enough to not use apple carplay nor android auto...but instead rely on the Lexus native app suite which STILL isn't available in Canada..

I’m kind of surprised that Lexus held a media launch event for what appears to be such a minor change. Good review of the MCE Mike. I don’t see anything to indicate the quality is anything less than one expects from Lexus. I’ll take an F-Sport please, but I do find that oversized grille is too much.

toyota/ lexus 6 speed gearbox better than 8speed gearbox in many ways, 6 speed very smooth and have a very good throttle response, and toyota / lexus 8 speed sometimes not smooth enough.

My wife has the 2016 NX 200 and she complains about the ride being harsh and a vague steering compared to her previous vehicle . On good roads however , it is a very nice vehicle with lots of power and good fuel economy for a heavy Vehicle.

You wish that but it was not the case, she has had 2 Tiguan in the past with no issues in fact we gave the 2014 to our son and he likes it a lot. My wife wanted something heavier for safety reason.

This is now the 2nd highest selling Luxury SUV in the US, it may be the 2nd highest selling luxury Suv in Canada as well. The RX is still the number one selling luxury SUV though. Lexus are clearly doing a lot right with their SUV's.

The reason for Lexus to change the name of the NX is not plausible, I wonder if Lexus will launch a smaller CUV and the NX 200 name has to make room for the new model?

Serge Vivier NX200 with a 2.0L engine is being sold in Asian countries. That’s probably why they changed the name to NX300 just to better differentiate.

Bartek Sumara this was a first look at a launch event. A full review is on the way once I can get a NX in the driveway for a week! Prices are more or less the same as 2017 but include more basic features.

Great review by Mike and agreed with his assessment on the new Lexus NX. I almost bought an NX 2yrs ago but thought about the practicality as I wasn't really upgrading (coming from a premium 5-passenger CUV) and glad I didn't...nothing really against the NX but found the ride to be a bit firm and choppy as well as limited cargo and rear visibility wasn't great. Subtle changes made on this 2018 but for most part still same as the previous 2yrs other than the standard safety features. Ended up with a 7-passenger mainstream brand for the same price as the NX so overall happy with my decision.

Oh...gosh!!! I've just bought 2017 Tucson Limited for few months and now I see this brand new 2018 NX300 F Sport coming out.... my mind kind confuse and little bit regret ...but I have no idea .... Hyundai can't compare to Lexus that is first I know ... maybe Genesis vs Lexus... second thing Lexus is way too high compared to my car ... 6k - 7k differences and last thing my experience never drive any luxurious cars.... I don't know how it feels compared to normal SUVs and any cars .... maybe my butt feels more comfortable ... Lol!!! Haha. 😂😂😂

Mike, you can't review an infotainment system without mentioning/weighting if it has Android auto or Apple car play. Other than that good review.

nope...i just speak what i like or dislike..ya i am a lexus /volvo fan..but that doesnt mean i like every lexus. After they came out with that radical design and with that spindle shape i started to no like lexus design that much. Some lexus models are good tho. However i still like their interior ..butnot so much exterior

I suggested this car to my daughter (Turning legal driving age in few months) .. Her answer was : How do you expect a car targeting young people to NOT have a Touch Screen? We are a Touch Generation .. I can't work with a pad .. So .. she dropped her from her choices without a second thought :(

Adnan Kashwani I can safely say that no teenager should have a brand new car as their first vehicle because they are still inexperienced and learning how to drive. Owning a used car teaches teenagers to appreciate things better and it's a rite of passage into adulthood. That money is better spent towards a down payment on a house.

Fuji Heavy Industries owns the majority stake in Subaru. Toyota owns somewhere between 16-20% interest in the company. They collaborate on some projects, but I don't think the share platforms other than the one used for the BRZ.

7:27 cramped rear seat, poor rear visibility, smallish cargo hold... This NX is fine for singles or couples who want a commuter but that's about it.

Ricky K fair point. I am not a fan but you are correct, everyone is different. Just honestly have never heard a positive when talking to someone about their Lexus infotainment system. Was surprised.

Oh yeah, I think Mike said that the sensitivity could be adjusted in the review but I find that especially where I live in Australia with right-hand drive cars, someone who's only right-handed might struggle with the mousepad-like control. Oh well

It's much better than the last NX I sat in. As I mentioned, I'm sure people will continue to have issues with the track pads. I prefer a scroll wheel but there are some advantages to this system. For example, you can swipe laterally and move from the top left corner of the menu to the bottom right in one go. The screen is top notch though. In terms of design/aesthetics it gets top marks from me.

My understanding is that Toyota and Lexus have historically been more "bland" in their styling while Nissan has been more aggressive. I believe Toyota has been much more aggressive the past few years - it clearly shows in their styling.

What they forgot in the front end design was a pair of chains made of crystal beads dangling down the lower corners of the front grill, which would have completed the theme. This is from a 3rd gen GS owner. Lexus nowadays all look like a victim of a collision, and year by year, they seem to be proud of it more the worse the accident is. I love the way Lexus drive and feel and really don't want my GS to be the last Lexus I own, but was forced to go out and bought a 10th gen civic as back up. I hope Toyota fires the design team ASAP. Sadly.

but, JJ, the RX, just like the NX, isn't even a "proper" Lexus being on a front wheel drive platform that is never part of Lexus DNA, and a Civic owned by a GS owner never gets a chance of taking smoke from an RX either, I'm afraid:)

Lexus "SUV"s are just souped up toyota boxes sold to aunties who don't care much about vehicle dynamics but willing to spend on a badge. check out body-on-frame proper SUVs from other makes for rear drive. ...And you don't need to smash anything with an RX, it's got this face that a massive plastic surgery is on order to begin with, LOL.

I couldn't stand this vehicle. Noisy as hell. That damn track pad was horrible. Visibility was poor. And no room at all in the boot. This one ranks dead last to me and my friends in all the compact luxury crossovers. Lexus did a poor job here. Plus....it's really not that attractive to look at and will age poorly.
