This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new Lexus NX350 versus the Genesis GV70. The new Lexus NX offers 4 powertrains, including a Hybrid and PHEV option. In this comparison, we’ll be focusing on the 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. It goes up against the Genesis GV70’s base engine, a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. There is a second more powerful engine available on the GV70, a 3.5L twin turbocharged V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. The GV70 is bigger than the NX 350. It is 2 inches longer and offers just over an inch more second row legroom. It also wins in overall cargo capacity with 10 cubic feet more space and 6 cubic feet extra behind the second row. The NX has been completely redesigned for 2022, it’s now longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model. The front signature spindle grille is more refined and the exterior doesn’t look as angular. Genesis uses the design philosophy Athletic Elegance and you can see that in this GV70. It has a distinctive exterior design with the Crest grille and the wing inspired slim Quad LED headlights. The GV70 has a standout interior in this category offering a modern, clean and contemporary design. It also offers great value on the base trim loading it up with plenty of standard features like a 14.5” touchscreen, an 8” LCD instrument display cluster, a wireless charger, heated steering wheel and leatherette seats. The NX offers a new interface multi-media system with an available 14” touchscreen, a 9.8” touchscreen is standard. Gone is the trackpad, you’ll find this system is significantly better than the previous model and Lexus says it is now 5 times faster.

My wife plans on trading her 2018 G80 Sport for the GV70. The dealer let her take one home so I can see it. Must've just got off the truck because it had protective covering all over. Anyway when she pulled up my first word was "wow". She had the red interior red exterior Prestige. Long story short I said to my wife this is Benz quality with a Lexus price tag. The GV70 is WAY more impressive in person. In my opinion the best in class. The GV70 looks and feels it should be 20K more than it's price tag.

To me these are both fine machines. But the GV70 is a better alternative to established German brands. It also just won the Motor Trend SUV of the year. Certainly lots of great options in this class.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 2 жыл бұрын
I think you hit on a key point, John. Genesis clearly benchmarked European brands throughout their lineup. Not surprising considering that Hyundai lured a whole cadre of German designers and engineers to the Korean brands. Furthermore, in the potentially huge Asian markets Japanese brands, including Lexus, remain minor players. In part for historical antipathy toward Japanese products that goes back to WWII and before. As you know, when upwardly mobile Asian consumers look for a luxury automobile, they traditionally look first to luxury German brands. Genesis has seriously undermined that appeal in Asia. Lexus, on the other hand, has become a default choice for North American consumers looking for luxury vehicles over the last three decades. Where Lexus was once a "value" alternative to German (and American) luxury brands, it has become a major, even a dominant, force in sales. Obviously, Lexus continues to rely on its strong appeal to luxury buyers and its reputation (deserved or not) for significantly greater reliability. Undoubtedly, the NX group of vehicles will outsell the GV70 in North America because of its hybrid option, its much larger dealer network, and its appeal to an older, more affluent demographic. But Genesis is on a roll in North America now that its dealer network is expanding (after several years of legal troubles with Hyundai dealers) and it is becoming better known.

@@davidbluhm1867 Yes, certainly Genesis doesn't have the track record Lexus has. It's only even been able to be ranked for three years now. But in those three years, they've beaten Lexus twice. It's not conclusive but at least indicative that Genesis is doing well so far. And frankly, Genesis doesn't compete with Lexus. Lexus sales are mostly warmed over Toyotas and don't have rwd platforms. Genesis is squarely aimed at the European competition. And in that regard, they're doing very well.

I am a Lexus owner since 1990 and they are truly amazing automobiles. Fit and finish are always at a very high level and consistent however, pricing has become an issue as well as technology. I have also owned a Genesis and have to say that they are a serious competitor to ALL brands. Great fit and finish, great technology fantastic warranty and a price that makes sense. I own a 2018 NX today but, if I was in the market for this segment, I would choose the Genesis.

I drove the dealership owner's demo GV70 today. Swoon, it had every feature available in this SUV. It is more solid, luxurious and peppy than the NX350. They say it has a larger interior, but I can't really tell. Comparing it to my current XT5, it's snug but not claustrophobic like the NX. The seats were plush, the interior mechanics were outstanding. I can't get over how much power it has when taking off from the stoplight. I bought the Genesis for looks, tech, quiet ride, softer ride and RWD. I do have to say after 7 months of ownership, there have been quite a few issues. I had the rear differential start making noise after only 1200 KM...you can look that up as their number one most common issue. I also had the steering rack replaced due to heavy steering when it gets very cold. Now I'm waiting for a new throttle body and a water pump. It was hesitating when accelerating, nearly causing an accident and the water pump is leaking. All completely covered under warranty and I have another GV70 as a loaner vehicle...brand new, but it takes 4-5 weeks to get a part. Every time. Everything else has been fantastic and it was great driving through a Canadian winter with AWD, remote app start that turns on heated seats and steering wheel. So...great vehicle but I suspect this first model will take some beating on reliability.

@@mitch20003 I think this has a lot to do with Sedans. Up until recently Genesis had no SUV's. Demand for sedans is small. 80% of the cars sold today are trucks and SUV's. It's also a new company a lot of people still haven't heard of. I'm betting the sales of both the used and new cars will go up now that they have SUV's to sell it's just going to take 3 to 5 more years. Once this happens more Genesis dealers will be around and even more cars will sell. I have to drive an hour to get to my closest Genesis dealer. Of course the increased sales of the brand will make me sad. I like driving a mostly unique car in the area I live in.

GREAT GREAT REVIEW....So i"ve already test drove the Genesis GV70 down here in Glendale CA about 2 months ago, I'm now waiting on the Lexus Dealerships to showcase the new NX350H. Here is a bit of insight into the future if you don't mind me sharing. Again, this might not apply to you but it is worth looking into. As we know we are heading into a shortage of "Energy" and yes that includes Gasoline for whatever the reasons might be the cost of such forms of energy will become that much more expensive. If you are one that will be driving more than 20K miles per year you could see a spike on the cost to fill up your tank. This then takes us to the "Who Actually buys Lexus" and that will be someone like me, the person that has saved enough pennies to acquire a "fancy" yet RELIABLE vehicle, this is the same reason I would not for now venture to buy one of the Europeans cars even though they are gorgeous vehicles. And with that said the cost of Gas will be a huge indicator when it comes to my purchase decision. If only Genesis would give signals of a Hybrid version and NOT fully EV as also the cost of Electricity will be skyrocking "mark my words" I would gladly place down $32K as a downpayment and be happy with a monthly payment of $400 under a 5 year term, knowing full well I would try to pay it off before then. Thank you.

Good review but there is NO WAY this SUV is depreciating 70% after 5 years. The G70 depreciates about the same as a BMW 3 Series. The GV70 hasn't been on sale long enough but it's all about supply and demand...basic Economics 101. The demand will be high and the stock low so used GV70's will not depreciate anywhere close to this figure. Need to do a better job on this part because it's important to get the numbers right. This is Motor Trends Car of the Year. I see how your rationale but it's flawed in this case so you have to find another way as there's no history on this vehicle as it's a new model. If anything, 1 year depreciation on GV70 might even be better than its peers, given the hot demand (barely any used inventory!)

Genesis GV70 for me. Advanced model and 2023 because they drop some features in 2024, (in the US)! I control the screen from the console primarily, so reach is not a problem and the positioning helps keep your eyes in a split vision with the road. Landscape is significanly better! I lreally don't like th looks of the NX grill which somehow reminds me of the helmet the villain in the movie "Predator" wore! 😆I haven't worried about resale value that much as I tend to drive a car until they are not worth much as a trade-in. At 65, I don't worry much about money anyway. I don't care about badge image at all-I bought a Subaru "Forester" when no one knew what they were either, although I do take a bit of pride in being THATkind of cool-😆!! I think at this level they are all pretty good so either is a good choice!I I agree with all your positive points on the GV70. I'm fine with the steering wheel. Actually, it wouldn't have occured to me to notice it really! I think the "upgrade" looks worse in terms of overall styling and you lose MPG and some comfort with the bigger tires. That matters more to me than the steering whee! I also like that with "Driver Assist" on I can comfortaby rest my hand where that third spoke would be so as not to get that warning alarm. One question: Do you think the tint on the Genesis moonroof is better than the clear? Well done review, as always!

The Lexus NX is ugly and already looks dated. The NX is based upon the RAV4 an FWD biased economy CUV. The GV70 looks amazing in person...though I'm not a huge fan of the oval theme of the interior...especially the base steering wheel. @@naveenthemachine it's funny how almost nobody really understands the true implications of warranty coverage. For example I could give you a lifetime warranty on a vehicle and while every part that you replace on it for the rest of your life may not cost you anything, it doesn't necessarily mean the labor to replace the part is also going to be free. That's the least of the issues because whenever the vehicle malfunctions it's malfunctioning with YOU driving it. That's annoying regardless of warranty coverage. Also you buy a vehicle because you want to drive THAT vehicle. Not one just like it in a different color as a courtesy car or another type from the same manufacturer. You want YOUR vehicle and you don't want it to constantly give you a headache or be in the shop requiring you to drive something else while they figure out the issue. That sportage had climate control issues 2 months out of the showroom then it had transmission issues, then it had a throttle body unit that had to be replaced, then it had suspension issues. Funny thing is it never really stopped giving problems, I actually just got fedup of the hassle and gave up on it ever working the way it should. I am NEVER buying another vehicle that wasn't made by Toyota. I've learned the hard way.
