As of March 16th, Makita is launching a new line of Impact rated bits and drivers called the XPS line. We were lucky enough to get an early review of these in the Lazy Guy DIY shop and put them to a few quick tests.
The XPS lines are boasting 90x longer lasting life than standard bits with new technology in torsion rings and a torsion zone to stand up longer to strain.

Everyone reviewing these says 90% longer, but the package say 90X, which would by 90 times longer- a huge difference.

The ads I've seen say 90x longer, which I find hard to believe in my case, unless they have some magic feature that keeps them from getting lost. :)

Hate to be another to add that I've broken a bit...but first bit i was using too...the T20 torx bit. I was driving maybe the 3rd 2 and a half inch screw into just a 2x4.

I thought the Impact X replaced the Impact Gold. And now the XPS bit replaces the X. I think the X fits a PH2 head better than the Gold and last longer (4x ?). The XPS promises to be even better. Thanks for the review.
@LazyGuyDIY
@LazyGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's odd because I think the X was just out for about a year now. I don't believe it's just a re-brand like I've seen other companies do after a soft launch.
@MichaelShor
@MichaelShor 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I can see, the Impact X is their industrial line. It would be interesting to see a side by side comparison on the XPS versus the X versions. The XPS versions of the bits appear fancier into have a better surface coating, but I'm curious what the differences are actually like. The product lines down overlap completely in terms of what bits they actually offer in them.

Makita states on its website that the Impact Premier tops the Gold... why o why are they this messed up on taxonomy (as all the other brands), as if it doesn't matter and MOSTLY as if they're non-technical folks? :p Just add a few system-thinker design engineers or whatever, the'll figure out the hierarchy and structure.

You should treat yourself, and get some Wera screwdrivers and bit sets. KC Tool is your friend! I love when someone asks me about my screwdrivers with their weird handle and I show them that all my screwdrivers can support their own weight in a random door hinge as well as the weight of a drill or an impact for the bits. Makita may have been the “gold standard” in the orange box store, but that’s a very small sandbox to be playing in.😉

@MichaelShor 3 жыл бұрын
I mean, meh, I love a lot of Wera products but they're Phillips bits? Their edges seem pretty rounded, and overall I think they can out a lot. I don't know about their impact versions, but I can't say much for their standard Phillips insert bits. Their torx bits are fine, and their hex plus bits may be the best in the industry, if Mac RBRT hasn't beat them. Also, Makita offers some things in this product line that where it doesn't, like long impact bits. Do you actually like Wera Phillip bits?

@LazyGuyDIY
@LazyGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, I'm surprised. Obviously they aren't unbreakable, I wonder how long other brands would have held up to the same application or if it was just a fluke? Bosch came out with a series a few years ago and I broke every single philips bit within minutes. Turned out it was a bad batch of material that they replaced for me.
@Da9guy1993
@Da9guy1993 4 жыл бұрын
@@LazyGuyDIY previously i had been using the old Makita gold bits, they lasted thousands and thousands of screws before wearing out, never had one break before. I think the new bits are super hard possibly making them brittle. Could also be a fluke. I will know soon.

Put it up against the Milwaukee shockwave bits. I find they fit and last the best/longest
@LazyGuyDIY
@LazyGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
I'm a big supporter of the Shockwave series but I've seen quite a bit a cam out and chipping after tougher projects, so i'll be interested to see how these hold up long term.
@evictioncarpentry2628
@evictioncarpentry2628 4 жыл бұрын
It mostly depends on the operator and what your fastening Imo. Some people really suck with an impact, where you could weld their bit to the screw and they'd still be slipping. Ive been using the DTD171 for almost a year and a half and honestly, on speed 4, if you're not 100% straight on, any bit in existence cams out/slips because it's just so damn fast until it starts to impact. I sometimes have to crank it down to speed 3 if I need to screw on angles and what not to prevent slippage. But anyways, in my own everyday work Milwaukee bits for me. I would definitely try these XPS bit in 3 and 6 inch, though.
@LazyGuyDIY
@LazyGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
@@evictioncarpentry2628 totally agree with you and man do people love to use impacts when they should be using a standard driver. I haven't gotten my hands on a 17, but the XDT16 is a monster. Seems like with these XPS bits there will be a lot of head shearing on cheap fasteners. I know I had that issue with shockwaves as well. Then the yellow brand... I've snapped those bits in half in only a few minutes of use.
