Nice tidy solution! I imagine this would work on some uprights as well?! Depending on how the lid opens up of course... The K series Kawai piano lids open completely up from a set of hinges at the back, so should work a treat!

Where can I find that bracket? It is almost essential for using mics like those you use, otherwise the mics remain too close to the strings. Please let me know. Thank you

Being honest, I try in countless occassions to get in touch with them and they just cant be bothered to even answer a simple email. That first said... and now the questions, please :) Can the lid be closed without having to remove that bar? else I really don't see much advantage In an ideal world, but I think this is too much to ask for LOL, is if they would have added some sort of goosenecks or something like where even the microphones (depending on the type of microphones of course) could be somehow kept in there while closing the lid. Don't get me wrong, on paper it looks like a great idea and like I said I even attempt to contact them on several occasions trying to get some questions answered with no success whatsoever but honestly, if you stand back, have a good look and a good thought about it there is little to none advantages of using this. The same amount of work (can be bothered about it like if you know what I meant), almost the same if not more dangerous chances to damage your piano and of course the cash investment when a pair of VERY STABLE microphone stands cost you about 10€ (mind you mine costs almost 50 each trying to get a compromise safety/looks LOL) You know really the very best thing (comfort-wise) I ever saw? Just a simple Zoom H6 hanging opposite down from the lid of the piano attached with a ventose like system and if like me you got some space between your piano and you piano lid you don't even need to take the cables out BUT, because there is always a but LOL, who wants to record a piano with a Zoom handy recorder? LOL

Are you having any vibration problems during recording? That pics up in the microphones being that it sits on the piano?

While this is a great solution for near miking, the sound you get is more appropriate for rock piano as you are getting a more immediate, hammer on string sound (or in a live stage environment where feedback could be an issue). A large diameter pair further out will capture more of the soundboard and sympathetic string vibration that will give a truer, more holistic sound picture of the piano. Think of the sound an audience member would hear. Do they have their head right above the hammers? However, in the end it is your preference as a performer as to what you will convey to your audience. I’m writing this as a jazz musician, an experienced recording engineer and a huge fan of your playing.

Good points Gary. I should add that I have a ribbon(?) mic at the end of the instrument a little further out that I mix in. The issue with this space is there's huge amounts or reverb flying everywhere, with 30 foot high ceiling space. I do want to experiment with some further out micing and like that sound in general, and micing in general that's from a place where the instrument sounds great with your ears, i.e. listener perspective. I'm mostly in hear by myself all during COVID, so learning as I go on audio, video, and streaming. To your point of listener's head above hammers - I've often thought the same thing with the classic Van Gelder piano recording technique of in the hole mic (not a big fan of that piano sound!)

@@pianopeter I agree with you on the RVG sound. The way to combat the reverb in the room while miking further out is by using large diaphragm mic set to cardioid. The backside of the mic will reject extraneous room sounds. Try with the mics at the rim about two-three feet away with the right (treble) channel up by the lid support and the bass down further towards the foot. You are doing a great job and have come a long way since your first forays into KZfaq! P.S. You were studying at UNO when I was taking my masters at Loyola back in the 90’s. It’s a shame we never crossed paths!

More mics spaced will cause phase issues. The coincident pair is good. They just need to be higher up, away from the strings more. Close to the lid will reduce the comb filtering from bounce off the lid as well. Ideal would be literally against the lid but you'd have to use side address mics. That way you'd get twice the signal due to reflected sound adding to direct, but without a significant delay between the two, like a PZM approach.

@@piedpiperprod Those are indeed possible techniques, but again, I was suggesting a more “listeners” not “players” perspective. And again, this is for solo jazz piano. I wouldn’t use this technique in a cramped live situation or with a louder ensemble with electric instruments. I have tried dozens of placements of techniques, x/y, Blumlein, M/S and spaced pair at the hammers, under the lid PZM, etc. I like a spaced pair at the lip as I described, cardioid if the room is iffy, and a little further out in omni if the room is nice to give a more holistic picture. Phasing issues can be avoided with proper aiming, spacing and listening. The miked piano here is what I mean (the spaced pair). www.sony.net/Products/microphone/

@@garyhoffman1 How is it possible to avoid phase issues with a spaced pair? Seems like a technical impossibility. You might like the sound for whatever reasons, which is fine, but you will have phase conflicts.

looks good but for my own recordings it is useless. I prefer to have the mics looking at the bridges, not the noisy hammers and mechanic

At that close distance, it also audibly highlights the midrange with the lows and highs dropping off in volume. Raise it 6 to 12 inches it would be much more balanced. None of this, including your comment above need be an issue, as the mount is adjustable to fit in different positions across different places on the piano. If you click on the pianomount link it shows a very different positioning that gets the mics away from the hammers.
@pianopeter

yeah there's more flexibility in positioning than I showed, I'm learning as I go!!

This looks like a very nice mount. I am trying to help my wife with her channel kzfaq.info and will probably pick one of these up, so thank you! While my wife does such a great job with the music, she's looking to me for help with the technical side of things, and I've got a lot of room to grow in that department. Have you done any videos on piano micing basics? If not, if you or folks reading these comments have any recommendations for someone just getting started, that would be much appreciated. I am not satisfied with our current sound. Thanks for putting out so much great content!
