I’m in my 3rd year teaching. My advise is to not compare yourself to veteran teachers or other specials classes that are quiet, like art. This year has been my best year because I’ve let go of caring what other teachers think about what I’m doing in music(which is usually being loud!) or how I’m handling my classroom management.

As a music teacher I can say that the first year is something else. But if planned carefully, the second subsequent years become much easier which in turn allows you to explore possibilities. Great tips.

I have my music teacher certification but a lucrative opportunity came up just as I graduated. Now three years later, I am ready for my first teaching job. Your advice is spot on (based on my experience as a music and general substitute teacher), and it will help me as I get back in gear to teach music. New subbie here!

First of all I don't know who could not like your video, let alone TWO?! Anyway, I just want to say thank you so much for this video. As a new teacher I'm trying to be proactive and not let the imposter syndrome take over. So these tips are really great and brought on such good points. Talking about prior trauma about singing is such a real thing and I'm glad it's getting talked about.

Awesome tips! I’m a music teacher for 14 years now, BUT all my lessons were in Europe. Coming to The US was so different. I’m still working on getting my PEL here to be able to teach in a public school and listening to you has given me some ideas of how it will be like here. Thank you. Looking forward to watching your future videos.

Aloha! Thank you for this. I am a professional musician/recording artist living in Honolulu. I recently agreed to teach music to K-4 at private school. Where really close friend of mine who teaches dance there, approached me and asked if I would be interested. Aside from teaching ʻukulele workshops internationally, I have no real experience teaching in a classroom environment. Especially to children this age. I’m a confident musician, and honestly this has me loosing sleep. I’m trying to find out everything I need to know about classroom management. And how teachers use clever ways to focus their attention at the top of class. Thank you for sharing this video. These tips really are helpful, and your attitude and experience is a great motivation. I really feel I can do good for the school, so I want to do well. I love the recognition our ʻukulele I getting all over the world. And am amazed at it sounds in lots of the different kinds of music. Can I make a suggestion? in my workshops, the first thing I do, is to let people know how to pronounce the name of the instrument. And I understand the language barriers of different countries, and don’t make it a big deal. But I find it’s an important part of passing through the halls of time if it stays as true to its original form. If you’d like, I can send you a link to some one that says it correctly. Just let me know. I’m subscribing! Mahalo Nui Keaō Costa

Thank you so much! I am glad I could be helpful. You are going to be amazing in the classroom. The most important thing I found when first starting to teach in the school setting is you really learn by experience. You are going to learn so much from doing and you will adapt and find what works for you! I wish you so much luck! It is such a rewarding profession. Thank you so much for reminding me the importance of pronouncing the Ukulele correctly. I do know that the way most say it is the incorrect pronunciation. I have gone with the crowds and I am going to recommit to saying it correctly! Thanks for taking the time to leave such a nice message and thanks for subscribing.

I just got through my first week of school as a first year teacher and I had never felt so discouraged and scared in my life. I have a 3 year gap between getting my Ed degree and a masters in performance. I had forgotten how crucial classroom management is and I found myself going over procedures for nearly the entire duration of class. After watching your tips I realize that I am on the right track but I don’t know what management techniques are most effective. Do you know where I can find more strategies for music classroom management? The charter school I’m teaching at has some techniques that just don’t work well for music class as they involve clapping and yelling. I can tell my students get confused when I get on them for being too noisy or disruptive when the entire time I’m trying to encourage them to sing and dance. Anything helps so I’d love to hear some feedback from any music teachers out there.

Hi! I teach 50-minute classes, K-5. Generally, I break the class into 3 parts: a lesson (stories, vocabulary words, concepts, etc), a musical performance (singing, dancing, acting, or playing an instrument), ending with a game (anything fun, like freeze dance or musical chairs). My students love taking my class. I come up with super inventive activities that make them think and move out of the box. If you're having fun, they're having fun!

Hey Jessie! Love your channel! You've probably mentioned it at some point but I forgot =x haha. What is your main instrument? My main instrument is guitar and it seems like general music or a guitar class (never seen that before) is the typical career path. Was your main instrument responsible for the grades you are currently teaching?
@musicandmotivate1128
@musicandmotivate1128 Жыл бұрын
It is bass, I did my student teaching in Orchestra. I really really liked general music though, so I audited a gen music class and a small portion of my student teaching was in general music too. I think guitar would be perfect for teaching general, but at least at my college it didn't matter what your instrument was. They did seem to put in on a track if you played an instrument you were instrumental and if you sing general music. But, like I said I was certified in everything so I had no problem getting a general music job after college.
