Nice. If you can't afford a gym membership. A scythe harvest is a good workout.

If you have a scythe, that works great. And a much cheaper alternative to the Dewalt hedge trimmer you are showing is the Greenworks - also comes with the battery and charger PLUS the mini pole chainsaw! Much better deal. I've had great experience using their battery chainsaw (same size battery BTW) and would expect the hedge trimmer and pole saw to be equally as good.

Neat, but I think I'll stick with practicing with my old-school scythe. Hopefully, with practice, it will become the most efficient tool, and keep me in shape.

This is for people that do not wish to use a scythe, Just another choice. Each their own enjoyment.

I could have used that for my "lawn" yesterday. :) 20V is a bit low. My electric chainsaw is 80V, except it does heavier work. Gas-powered weed whackers are hard on my carpal tunnel (sometimes) and really noisy. A tool like that with spare batteries for the scale of the projects still looks like an improvement. Edit: just checked and Greenworks has a model for 80V batteries. Now I'm starting to think about this ...

I got an old timer gardening book. It was use way back then. Not a new idea. So I ask myself, why did they abandon the idea? Maybe it was just a fad back then as it is known. What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

Hello, I have been watching and tried it. It does work but with a huge cost. It make plants grow bigger because the copper wire or other antenna's make the plant roots draw in more water. The BIG DOWN side is it kills of the bacteria and fungi in the soil. Not Good

Do you bale that rye or do anything with it

We grow it to cut it down and leave in place for a mulch to grow our vegetables in to keep the soil moist.

I've seen vids using a heavy duty weed wacker with a wire grill or sweep which lays over the cut stalks when swept in a scythe motion. I have yet to find or price out such an attachment. I am covercropping in strips & patches for easier termination even in larger beds. This attachment looks like a heavy gauge wire "grill" aroung 6 in + (?) high. Please post a link or the proper name of the attachment in a reply if you think you know what it is.

Will the rye seed back from what you cut? Great videos!
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Жыл бұрын
It will depend on how mature the seed head is. There is different stages. For the seed to grow back it should be able to fall from the seed head . Then it is mature enough

Great tool for the job but (plz dont take the next bit like im trolling) but why leave so long Mark? I realise the root structure left behind is a great plus but isn't the top growth benefit lost a bit.
@kynknaturals
@kynknaturals Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "top growth benefit lost?" Are you referring to the mulching effect of the rye leaves? Or the compst material created? I don't understand your question (Not that it is for me...🙊)

The more top growth you get the better amount of mulch ( straw ) you get and roots. All GOOD things

If you using this as a cover crop over the winter, in the northeast, for example, when would you cut it down? Also, I guess you have to be careful not to planted too early, so it goes to seed.
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening 10 ай бұрын
I cut it down 30 days prior to plant anything at any time. I just plant sheets if cardboard on top and weight it down well to stop it from growing more. You have to cut it down a 1/2 inch below soil level before placing the carboard first. Enjoy
