New old manure spreader for the Homestead

We bought and repaired a 1957 McCormick manure spreader for $300. Being 100% organic, this will help fertilize the homestead. Chicken litter is very abundant in this area and makes a great organic fertilizer

Most often things built in the older days were of great quality. Looks as if you solved the problems as soon as tires can be put on.

Most of the time I have to forge out the dogs for the drive wheels .I've tried drilling and putting bolts they don't hold under a load and you can't back up or it'll break the chain

Homesteading the Hard Way I am going to make a set of drive paws, the pin was just a temporary fix and yep, backing up is not an option with the pin.

@@hickoryridgehomestead9177 They are a pain to make do you have an old one to use for a pattern ? If not let me know I still keep a couple of those spreaders next time I've got one here I'll make a pattern and send it to you

Homesteading the Hard Way There were only crumbled pieces left so nothing I make a pattern from. If you have on to make a pattern from that would be great. You can just trace it on a piece of paper and email it to me. That would be a big help!!! Thank you.

@@hickoryridgehomestead9177 might be a little while but I'd be glad to do that or might just make you one these I make out of mild steel don't last as long as cast iron so I have to make some from time to time

@@HomesteadingtheHardWay Im in no hurry. I come from an engineering background and spent 20 years designing and machining a lot of different products and equipment so I can work off a simple drawing or pattern trace. Thanks again for the help.

How did you make the spring? The spring on ours just broke and I can't find the part online. My husband somehow made it work with a zip tie but he doubts it will last long

I used a stainless welding rod, ( rig rod). Just wrap it a few times around something and leave the ends long so you can bend them to fit. It’s very easy to do. You can also order spring material on amazon or ebay and use that.
