Steve Strebel has been dismantling his fantastic "O" scale layout for years. All the structures and other features are being repurposed, in the case of the harbor he has reworked it into a classic 4 by 8 loop railroad that will now be a store display at "The Train Shoppe" at Gardner Village in Salt Lake City.
For decades Steve built his huge "O" scale model railroad in the loft above his house. The huge railroad was FANTASTIC! At one point our divorced friend Al Badham moved in with steve and the two of them worked every day on the railroad. The last section built was the Village of Knowwhere, a waterfront on a lake resort high in the mountains. I mean actually high in the mountains about 7 feet above the floor!
Well a few years ago Al passed away and Steve decided to move to Arizona. and so started dismantling the layout. The building a new layout, then dismantling that as well.
One of the really amazing places on the original layout was the harbor. One of the first areas built years ago it had (has) lots of details and an amazing ship model.
Well, it now lives on in a fun place, the Train Shoppe at Gardner Village where it will be a joy for young and old for many years to come.

Steve is an amazing artist. His and Al talents far surpass most everybody's model building. I am glad to see their legacy live on through others incorporating into there own layout or having operating dioramas. I know it must be hard for Steve to dismantle his layout but knowing that it will live on through others who appreciate there work and talent they put into it. I always like seeing Steve's layout. Thanks for sharing. Be safe and see you on Tuesday.👍🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂

Need to get back out there. I hear it’s RUNNING. And Steve had built a base for a four shelf changeable department 56 layout. Christmas. Halloween. Summer. And something else? Anyway slide one layout out and replace the top one. Need to see that!

This inspired me to build my modules ( 9'x 18") around the yard layout gust in case we had ta move, Great ta think of my hard work not ending up in a land fill ... thanks for a great coffey this morning ...

Yup. We did that show. Well shows, Jim Harper, who is 90 and wants to sell his house and railroad. Intact. I doubt that will happen. Someone will buy the house, but it’s a real long shot. And what of one of the words best layouts??? Broken up? Sold in chunks? So far we only know if one layout that is living on intact. One. The rest are in dumpsters. So this is the only way. I guess. Even a tiny bit of the Gore and Defeated survives. About 10 structures. So this is the only way we know to save a layout.

Yep i get it so that is why i did my own modules, each will fit each so I can just have 2 end ciceles, 2 ends and big curve, all plus as many strights as you can get in, or sell in pieces for a starter set up...

The detail! That's the way I like to paint. It makes the eyes exercise hopefully, and fun to look at. It might be a pattern or a face in the pattern, or just points of color. The details are what I always return to.

The thing, I find, about Steve's models is not just that they are not just highly detailed, but the the details he includes are many times un-expected, like the exposed pipeline in that scene near the power station. The hours and hours spent building his stuff requires a real dedication and motivation most never attain, let alone the eye for REALISM in a model. Then he gives his work to be displayed for us all to enjoy. That is truly a rare person. Great video, and some tongue in cheek humor too. ;-)

Dale: the purveyor of 'puns' prevails. Or, you could also describe it as a provocateur of B.S. You be the judge. Where in the world would we be without it? At the very least, it must register at the very top of the scale with Steve and Don.

Only thin on the layout that’s a kit. Ho scale. Walthers I think. Everything else is scratch. It sure adds a great feature while forming the loop. And without blocking the view of the pier.
