Peter Hooks favourite version, as Arthur Baker put the original bass back in that Barney and Stephen Hague took out.

That's it exactly... I've always liked this version without realizing it's because of hook's bass! I love the original but it clearly would have been better with this bass line.

Sorry, didn't realise this remix was already out there. Can't agree on the comments over at the video posting though. To me, this is the outstanding version. More delicate than the original, but still intense and strong. Wonderful bass guitar - and this pic is prettier than the film clip!

September 2020. The last concert I saw, before the virus, was NO in Athens, June 2019. I like thinking that it was my last concert in my life. You see, I'm old. And, by the way, I liked more Closer than Unknown Pleassures, and did't like Movement at all, but I saw NO in PCandL. September 2020, New Order, Still Respect!

Eh, I have only now heard this version. Gotta say, I massively prefer the original. It was simple and more powerful for it. Perfection is achieved not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to take away.

This song has nothing to do with the assassination of JFK. It's about domestic violence - as producer Stephen Hague states in a Sound on Sound interview. Hard to imagine how the song could be about the assassination of JFK which took place in November of 1963, and the lyrics talk about January of 1963.

interestingly, though, bernard sumner apparently confirmed the other version, ie that the song is a fictional account of te failed assassination of his wife. as you point out, the details are blurred, but it is a fictional account, and more of a metaphor for failed marriages. that's not to say the domestic violence interpretation is wrong, this kind of thing is always open ended.
