Hook and Morris are so good, and Gilbert fit right in. You can see how stressful these early shows are on Sumner, and they are a testament to overcoming what some may refer to as a lack of talent to become a consummate front man. Their perseverance has brought enormous beauty into my life.

They looked so young, awkward, lost and scared yet they're still up there playing. They have my utmost admiration for moving on despite their tragedy and shortcomings; it shows their desperation. Others thought they were done, Tony Wilson expected A Certain Ratio to be the next success story. Against all odds, it was the remnant of Joy Division that would yet again save Factory Records.

+canuck21 1. They didn't "look" young, they WERE young. 2. It shows their "desperation"? Dead wrong, it shows their resolve and persistence, perhaps even courage although that might be a stretch. In spite of any tragedy, life goes on, and so we all must as well.

This is so raw. They look like they were just told about Ian fifteen minutes ago. And they are BABIES. Sumner can barely get the words out, the guitars pushing him through, and the incredible double-timeheartbeat of the drumming, an engine that can't stop. And the audience standing around grimly like they're at a wake, and the lone man dancing.

To those complaining about the crowd , this ain't a song to dance to, it's one in which you contemplate. New order gave plenty tunes to dance to but this is a joy division song. It's one where you think deep and your mind goes to someplace else. What you do is close your eyes and start bobbling your head. That's what the crowd does here.

I think this was recorded on 23 April 1981. To give a bit of context, Ian Curtis had died on 18 May 1980, Gillian Gilbert had joined the group in October 1980, and there first album Movement would be released in November 1981, about seven months after this performance. So this is very early New Order and Sumner is not yet an experienced singer, hence why he struggles. Hook and Morris were doing the same thing they had done in Joy Division, so they are giving a much needed stability to the group while Sumner finds his feet, and Gillian Gilbert picks up the slack as the guitarist.

God damn it, I love how raw this performance is. Stephen Morris effing killing it on the drums. Bernard figuring out his voice. This song is probably one of my favorites by Joy Division/New Order. RIP Ian Curtis.
