Good to see John is like new!! Haha. He sure doesn’t spare the concrete. Great to see. No chance of a failure when he gets done. It’s good to remember that Chris is a very good to great operator, but to a very large degree, John taught Chris everything Chris knows about the job. Chris has worked for John for a long time now! It’s funny to see the boss in the trench running the packer while Chris is the employee in the machine, but a good boss puts his best resources where they do the best and recognizes his place in the team!! I know,,,,,, when I worked on my ranch, once I took on a second career in law enforcement 4 days on & 4 days off, I worked for my Farm Manager. I was the guy throwing bales etc and he ran the machinery. He needed to be by the radio for the other guys to be able to get ahold of him if needed. I could do it all, he could do most better and he was there every day, I wasn’t. I wasn’t a (somewhat) typical farm owner or ranch owner. I paid him very well. My crew too! I was fortunate enough to have a core crew of 6 guys with 15 - 30 years of experience when I retired. They stayed on with the new owner and at their salaries. The new owner was hesitant, but now after almost 2 years and no turn over, he sees the reasoning. They all work hard out of respect that they are paid what they are worth. I suspect Chris is paid quite well by John also, plus Chris is now on his way with his own business as well. Working 8 days a week, almost literally, you do obtain a high level of success, if you are smart with your money for later in life. Hopefully Chris slows down sooner than I did though, health can make retirement a little more challenging, like the back issues I have.

Why put concrete in the new overflow? Is it just to weight it down so it doesn't want to float up?
@spamlessaccount2 жыл бұрын
He's commented in other videos - yes, and to help keep water from seeping around the pipe. He calls it a "collar".
@bobw2222 жыл бұрын
@@spamlessaccount Thanks. I knew it was necessary around the outside of the pipe to create the collar. What threw me was when I saw him shovel some into the inside bottom of the plastic overflow itself. I'd never seen him do that on a plastic overflow, although I did see him do it on concrete ones.
@spamlessaccount2 жыл бұрын
@@bobw222 IIRC the overflow is actually a 'T' on its side and the concrete goes into the bottom leg of the 'T'.

Good afternoon. When I first saw you drop some of the concrete in the new overflow, I was like "nice job". Then you hand shoveled some in, I understood the tee. Sometimes it's nap time when I watch these. Lol, but true. So if you have done that in other videos I missed it. So this time I say NICE JOB! Really a great idea.
@danl.9092 жыл бұрын
I still don’t get it. Can someone relieve my brain density, please?
@shitloveaduck2 жыл бұрын
@@danl.909 that holds air. The water will settle and always be at the top of the hole at the top. As the dam get soaked in, the mud is not quite as solid as dryer dirt and the whole pipe can start to float up. As it does this the water gets in underneath and moves farther into the dam. Eventually it is possible it will fail. Even with all that dirt up top, it’s constantly working at it and can float up. With the T on the end it goes down far enough that you can fill the bottom part of the T with concrete to act as a weight. The concrete collar prevents water from workin in around the pipe and also acts as a weight as well. That cannot float up, cannot allow water to seep around the pipe (it’s really hard to get perfect compaction if the dirt is absolutely dry. Clay can become a powder as fine as or finer than talc. The waves hitting the shoreline and constant hydraulic pressure and action will now have no affect on the drain. It’s solidly held down and protected.

Professional repair. Just a query, why didn’t you dig up the old pipe and lay the replacement in that trench…..I know you’ll have a good reason……keep up the excellent videos 👍
@jcadult1012 жыл бұрын
20:20 you can see a good sized tree to the left on the top of the dam. New pipe is on the right and concrete plug is just to the left so I think they'd have to bring down that tree to pull out the old one.
@brucemitch9282 жыл бұрын

@RAYAR542 жыл бұрын
The old pipe is still quite a bit deeper than the new overflow.
@leebarnes6552 жыл бұрын
And not to be trusted, that old thing might have been leak out the side of itself half way thru and the trench needing to replace it packed the entire 15 feet from the soggy bottom clear to the top. As long as Chris stuffed some of the cement up into the old pipe, it will set up inside there and plug it at the front end with that large over spill of concrete we did see.

You and Uncle Jon know how to fix old pond pipes. Very dry and sandy looking dam fill, was there ANY clay? There`s some. Good job but you did not say why you only got a half a shovel full of concrete - I know,,,it gets heavy.
@MrGoesBoom2 жыл бұрын
So I've only recently come to have a fascination and appreciation for the building and maintaining of artificial ponds and things that could make life difficult for stuff. As I understand it bushes and trees close to or near the water line are a horrible thing because their roots can punch through the clay lining and provide weak points for leaking. Exactly how close to the water line is ok for trees/bushes before this is a problem? Not building a pond or own property to put one in even if I wanted to. Just kinda curious
