I live with hypermobility Ehlers-Danlos and was born with sever foot deformities that have been a major obstacle to my outdoor activities. The combination of a lightweight boat that I can also use a pedal drive with is truly a blessing. I wish you all the best health and good fortune moving forward.

50 years of traditional woodworking (including some kayaks, canons and related traditional boats) 20 years now helping others learn these skills and by far this is one of my favorite channels as I actually get inspired...learn new ways of thinking about things, and how to adapt my own ideas back into making another kayak hybred to spend my retirement years traveling and fishing with. This paddel system has me really interested in perhaps adding that to a design...Thank you so much and love the new content you putting out with your adventures!!!

Thanks for another great video on your continuing journey for exploring the possibilities of every aspect of SOF canoes. I built two of them 2 years ago and I’m still super proud of them, only thanks to your super plans and course. I’m tempted to build a third one with a drivesystem in it. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Holland.

Hi Brian! I switched over to a Mirage drive a couple of years ago after my shoulder started giving me trouble while expedition kayaking. I had to move over to a Hobie kayak - the Adventure Island Tri - as the drive didn't seem readily adaptable to my existing fleet. The Hobie Adventure Island has been one of the most fun and capable boats I've used. But it meant that I was left with several really great kayaks and small boats that I didn't expect to be able to use again. So I'm thrilled to see that you've taken on this project. I'm looking at adapting my Pygmy Wineglass Wherry to the Mirage drive.

Just getting into canoe sailing. After seeing the hobie adventure island I was curious if that could be adapted to a sailing canoe. You nailed it. I am curious if you could go with a leeboard mounted to a thwart. Solway Dory has a very cool set up that uses leeboards instead of dagger/center boards. I love how deep in the weeds you go with prototyping and designing. Thank you for sharing.

Glad I got around to watching this as I'd missed the talk of the upwind sailing (potential) possibilities. About the only thing I think was missing was which of the current models are recommended? I was looking a few weeks ago to get an idea of what the Mirage drives cost and got a bit lost in all the models. And as an aside, a number of successful R2AK teams have used the Mirage drive over that past years.

One option for the older mirage drives is to change to turbo fins. The 72066001 - ST Turbo Fin Kit fits the older V2 mirage drives and greatly increases the power output. So if you're buying second hand drives you will just need to confirm the item is at least a V2 drive.

The newer drives have bearings in place of bushings, so are a lot smoother to operate.

@@CalebSmyth yeah, I'll bet. I haven't tried the newer models yet. Still have my v2 drive from years ago when I had an Adventure Island.

i only realized earlier this month that my back is more messed up then previously expected. I'm going to be selling my 3 kayaks off and I'll most likely be interested in this canoe fully modded out. I'm actually kind of excited about it having a bigger / upwind sailing design as I've been following the stuff the texas 200 gets up to doing since all the small sailboats get hauled thru my city to get to the launch point. if i built this, it has to be more in the spring as i have a busy winter ahead of me. I'd be making the wider longer canoe as i want to fish around in laguna madre with my 72 lbs dog. it's all a real big maybe for me at this moment. except i am serious about getting rid of my kayaks as they are too painful for me to use.

What is the stiffer wood you would build the large prototype out of? Just curious. I bought the SOF canoe course and I haven't built a boat yet but it has already helped me with material selection and techniques for other steam bent projects.

hey, I had an idea that you might like. Can we get an old turbo from a diesel truck and use it as a jet pump? You could easily build intake and outlet runs into the hull. Then the pedals can attach with a shaft to drive the impeller pump , but the jet pump can be under the waterline. you might be able to use more bike parts to work out the ratio. Just a big flywheel to get a nice high speed out of the turbo, they are rated for 10,000 rpm anyway.

How much is the electric motor? As a senior and with my limited cardio, the option is very interesting.

I really like this idea. For my 50th (6 years from now), a friend and I are planning to take two solo canoes from the Rocky Mountains to Hudson Bay. He can make his own choice regarding his canoe, but I'm darn curious about using a skin-on-frame with this pedal drive option. However, everything in me cautions me against this due to only having used more rugged hard canoes for the past 25 years. I know that the indigenous as well as various voyageurs used birch bark canoes, which to me seems the closest comparable. The amount of rapids, as well as sweepers and shallow rock bottom in some of the fast water like early in the trip on the Athabasica have me worried about spending 3 months in one of these. I have questions about how well they'd hold up to these constant abrasions, but also how well they'd handle the upriver sections while poling. So many things to think about. This is a pretty cool idea that would be a great addition if I think it'll handle the ~1800 miles of river we'd be on.

Having a skin on frame boat (F1 Kayak), and having built several wooden boats, I'm pretty confident the SOF would be fine overall. Reinforce the rub areas with an extra coat of goop, maybe a rub rail. They are super tough. If it were me, I'd build one now and beat on it the next 2 years. Tweak what you need more of, or less of, and build another one. Year before the trip build the one you'll journey on... you will have learned so much and that one will be almost perfect. Plus you'll know how to fix or repair any problems you encounter. SOF is way tougher and more durable than most people think!

I think Justin has exactly the right idea as far as a strategy for your trip. Build one now and see how you like it and then you can either reskin it or build another one for the trip. I’ve got a great video here on the channel about skin on frame durability that you can check out. Couple years ago I had a gal paddle one from the source of the Columbia river to the ocean over 1000 miles.

@@capefalconkayak it's mostly because a number of my friends that run canoe trips recommend against it but I can't help but feel it's worth a trip. It would be the closest thing to a birch bark canoe I'll get. But then my friends all run trips with less experienced people. Have either you or Justin tried poling your canoes? It's something I'm good at with a fiberglass and plastic canoe but am curious how a skin on frame would handle it.
