Magni You _can_ hear the motor's sound, but yeah, the gears are much louder and harsher. I know the sound well; I've traveled in plenty of electric cars that don't have gears. It's very quiet, but still audible.

mondayfool I think saying that this time is slow under any circumstances is quite foolish. The fact of the matter is that it crushes the record, also keep in mind that electric motors are still fairly new technology and not as refined as internal combustion. It also only had 500ish horsepower which isn't as much as some others.

Speed is what matters, so I'm all for the change. But it does feel like something great was lost with the powerful sound of a combustion engine. I mean the people are gonna go wow the first time, of course. But maybe it gets less impressive after a dozen of these whizz by. The roar or scream of a petrol racing engine stays impressive no matter how many time you hear it. You can sense the power. They often carry distinct and varied sounds too.

Dismissive drive-by posting in a sensitive topic. After you hear a few EV’s you find they have their own distinctive sound and in combination with the instant torque it’s quite an experience.

Slow charge time compared with refuelling is another problem. I understand there have been some developments in this area but given that we've never seen the same levels of investment in electric car technology as we have in fossil fuels, I wouldn't be surprised to see improvements in the medium term. Batteries these days are not heavy. They are no longer the issue they once were.

The german Developer couldn´t do it for a good reason . For you , as an Americain , it would be fun but for us , as Germans , it meant death and distruction. Or let´s say it in a sample : You would never use the high-rev_tones of the Planes seconds before they crashed into the Towers as a sound for a car like this . In the same manner we would never use the sound of a Stuka of the WW2. I think that´s quite understandable for everyone. Nontheless , I also have to rejected your words : Fuel burning cars aren´t as efficient in higher altitudes . In general that is correct . but there is one question left . Why do commercial and military planes and helicopter still use fuel ( cerrosin to be precise ) ? If fuel burning maschines are not more efficient in higher altitudes than electrical maschines , why don´t Airbus and Boing and all the other developer use electrical engines for their planes ? Even on a short distance flying airplane they don´t use electrical engines . For me the electrical engines are unusefull for a long distance and high altitudes cause they need much more power and much more resorces to reveal the same thrust as if they continue to use fuel . To stay with the cars : A car with electrical power is only in the first sight more efficient than a fuel burning car ( petrol and diesel ) When the batterie is empty it needs electrical power to get recharged . the electrical power will be produced by Nuclear , Gas , Oil or Coal power plants and we all know how inviomentally destructive those are . And don´t look at all the ingridiences inside a Batterie use for a car . There are much more hazardous materials inside to say they would be enviormentally better than a fuel burning car . Of course if you compare it to a dragster or open race car than you are on the right side . But if you compare it to a normal modern road car or a normal modern truck you´re not correct . Normal modern cars or truck are under a hard restriction of the Goverment to lower the emissions of the engines . And that´s the place where modern cars loose the power . Of course at the Hill Climb Race at Pikes Peak the eingines mostly loose the power caused by the oxigen which gets less every foot the car gets higher . Not with 4000+ lbs of mostly battery. Straight line maybe. Then there is battery capacity. How would you run it at the track all day. It is still not "There" for avg joe. This car had to cost quite a pretty penny and be scaled for one run.

While electric cars are undeniably fast and will probably beat many if not all the records of an internal combustion engine sooner or later, for me there is no passion for these vehicles. The sounds and smells of combustion engines whether petrol or diesel or anything else, are essential to stir the emotions in watching them race. Formula E is complete bore. Give me a screaming V12 any day.
