You could allow the deck to act similar to the Soulknife Rogue's Psionic Dagger and have it be thrown and do force damage to REALLY embrace the Gambit combat style

I'm happy to see more magic items, but we haven't had a significant expansion to the game's list of spells in a LONG time (no, three is not significant). I had hoped that with this possibly being the last book of 2024 and the refresh coming next year, we would see lots of spells. Guess not...

Sounds like, from the latest 2024 Book video, new spells are coming there. Might be they were saving the spell list increase for the new core books. Supposedly almost 1000 pages between the DMG, PHB, and MM (although I feel like Monster Manual will just be a slight update to Monsters of the Multiverse).

Personally, I’ve been LOVING the Rune Shaper background…and creating a character who “paints” their own cards could allow for an interesting merging with the “Cartomancy” feat… Actually, that tears it: that’ll be my peak Wizard…I can’t wait. Somewhere between a stage performer & charlatan…it’ll be so good.

As a DM I love this I love the DoMT and love the new lore and cards so far, I do wish I could buy it in person for the irl cards and then use the magic items and spells in DNDBeyond but I am super excited for this book and hope we get more books focused around expanding on existing fan favorites!!

Yes! More Feats that customize your Class and Race! Though this sounds more like a Bard Feat than a Warlock. Suave Card Archetype? Stage magic/card tricks?

So I don’t think you can use the feat with that class, because it isn’t Warlock, Sorcerer or Wizard. But if you don’t use feat requirements, that works too

Magic items are generally NOT 'player options'. They are DM options or random chance 99% of the time. Rarely does a DM go 'you are at a magic item shop, here's a pricing chart based on rarity, go buy whatever you want'. So for ACTUAL player options, we have a feat, 2 backgrounds, and whatever selection of spells are added. Not a great offering. This is why so many of us are turning to 3rd party content. We spend 20-60 bucks and get SEVERAL subclasses, SEVERAL backgrounds, SEVERAL feats, usually a huge pile of spells and magic items, and a setting. 'official D&D' content just means 'cheap cash grab' at this point. You release 5-6 books in a year that have the content of what should be 1 or 2 book, or 1 set of books if you want to keep the 'player options/DM stuff/bestiary' paradigm. Hoping 5ev2 is better than v1 in the years to come.

Sooo disingenuous to describe magic items as "player options." You can't normally go to your DM and say: "I want this magic item". It turns potential buyers off when these videos proclaim that the book is more focused on what they want from an official book than in reality

I love magic items as both a player and a DM, but you're right. This is the section i look forward to most and it's been so lacking for the recent releases. Cartomancy is a very cool concept, but no book has really stood out as an exciting torrent of new content to use since Tasha's for me.

I've had a spell idea rattling around in my head for several years which fits PERFECTLY with the theme of this book Veil of cards: 4th level abjuration 1 action, self Material component (A deck of playing cards worth at least 1 gold) Upon casting, you gain 52 temporary hit points, represented by 52 flying playing cards forming various rings around you. HOWEVER, playing cards are quite easy to bypass or break through. Whenever you take any sort of damage, roll percentile dice. If the number rolled is higher than the amount of cards remaining (your temp HP), then the attack ignores your temporary HP, and you tank the damage yourself. If the roll is lower than the amount of cards remaining, then the damage prioritizes your temporary HP as normal. For that purpose the cards have resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage, immunity to poison, and psychic damage, and weakness to fire damage.

Hmm, at first I was thinking that this sounded too strong with the 52 temp HP. But with the percentile roll, it almost feels like it dips into not strong enough in a way. Mirror Image is 2nd level, and you get three duplicates which completely negate attacks with a similar level of probability. That means the damage taken needs be 17 or less on average for this spell to prevent more damage than Mirror Image. A level 4 spell means 9th+ level caster, so taking a look at CR 9 creatures we see the Cloud Giant which averages 21 damage with its Morningstar attack, or 30 with a rock throw. In one multi-attack, it can average 42 damage. Now this spell would cut THAT damage in half since it isn't magical, but a lot of other creatures have magical or elemental attacks. The resistances on the cards aren't nothing, but I'm not sure they're enough to justify it. That being said, mirror image is only for attack rolls, so this spell also protects against AOEs. Over all, my gut feeling is that this should be a 3rd level spell not a 4th level spell. Also, it needs a duration and I would nix the material component cost.

Hmm... I messed that up. You get 4th level spells at level 7 not 9, I flipped it around. I don't think that changes my over-all evaluation, but it does mean my examples are wrong.

Unfortunately, 1:00, Pact Magic does not make you eligible for Cartomancer. That said, this makes a gorgeous 4/4/4/4/4 Multiclass: Bard, Cleric, Druid Sorcerer, Wizard. With 5 ASI/Feats. Or even, 3/3/3/3/3/2/2/1 for Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Wizard, Paladin, Ranger, & Artificer, respectfully. No Feats unless you're Custom Lineage or Variant Human & got a Background Feat. This makes you a lv20 character who is a 17th level Spellcaster, access to 9th level Spell Slots (but only know up to 2nd level Spells for full casters, 1st level Spells for half-casters.) This makes you eligible to grab the Wish Spell via 9th level Spell Slots through Cartomancer. With Point Buy, this build is possible with 13 stats in five ability Scores, with 10 CON in the remaining before Racial bonuses kick in. Or you drop CON to 8 to distribute two points to turn one 13 --> 14. Say STR for instance, making the Racial bonus bump the 14 --> 15. Perfect for Plate Armor to not penalize your Movement. There's only one way to bump up the CON score (or any of them actually) and that's by playing with Sanity & Honor stats, giving you 3 points each for 6 points total to distribute further among the now 8 ability Scores.

So now that the product is out, the Cartomancer feat (as far as I see in my physical copy and on D&D Beyond) has only 4th level & Spellcasting feature in its requirements. Did you intend for it to have Pact Magic as an option as well or was this suddenly changed after this video was released?

Spellcaster min-max option. Who doesn't wanna cast a spell as a bonus action. Feels like it's not as much variation options but power creep options. Personally races and subclasses are much more appreciated and valuable than spreading power creep feats over 6 books...

Turning all of these into feats also makes them noticeably less unique. I get that it’s probably easier to test versus the many features of a subclass, but "Wizard who uses cards as a focus" is much more impressive than "Spellcaster #62 who can use spells through cards, maybe".

This isn't "lots of character options". It's "a couple of" character options. :( The new cardonancy feat is really cool, but it should be a full sorcerer or bard subclass. Background options are nice, but never come into play at most tables. Magic items aren't character options they are dm options unless the rumors about players being able to purchase magic items with irl cash from dndbeyond are true.

Making those books compatible with 2024 phb will be the bane of them as they can't add much anything of value to the players since it would limit what they can do with the playtest moving forward

This isn't anything new. They are planning to make the 2024 books retrocompatible with previous books since it's announcement. Nothing changed.

This is nowhere near the bloat of previous editions (minus 4e). There is legitimately no reason for 6e to even happen with the 2024 update (which isn’t 6e) and the fact that it would do nothing positive for the game. Think this is “bloat” is just laziness.

So you're just gonna nuke Russel's podcast that make's NO money and is essentially an online library...for reading a book. He's been doing this for over four year's, reading through the Legacy of Drizzt...and lo and behold. Just as I see a bunch of new stuff coming out for Drizzt that I had put in order's for even, excited for once to get back into DnD. You do this. Greedy, pathetic, absolute scummy thing. He took no money, he made no profit...all he's done is bring new fan's and old back into the fold. And you did this...well consider this fan done. And Judging by his comment section, I'm not the only one. Just like GW, enjoy the profit drop for being scummy to your own community. Guess you didn't learn from the OGL business after all.
