I personally like the second idea. Moving the living room into the playroom and the living room then being the playroom 😊

Having a smaller "tv room" has always been beneficial for my family. It was a designated place for tv/ videos games but we also used it for quiet activities like reading or family board games when the tv wasn't in use. It can also help with putting limits on tv time.

At first I was thinking to keep the living room as is. But the more you talked, I think you should move the living room into that room! And the babies could play in that space!

Hi there, I’m an arch student so might be able to help you! I think keeping the playrooms separate is probably the best idea, as it will prevent the main areas from looking too cluttered. You’ll also not end up using the living room as much you’d think, as it’d be too closed off. Instead maybe switch the dining table and sofa areas so that the kids won’t walk in front as much. (Make an L shape with the sofas- one facing towards the wall and one towards the back doors. This sections off the living area a bit more and means the kids would have to walk round the back of the sofas to reach the garden).

I don‘t think that babies need a playroom all for themselves. They would be perfectly fine with a play corner in the living room. Babies usually like to be where their parents are anyway. Your big kids are so understanding and lovely. They seem to be happy and content with everything.
@waldi23

The thing is that they want a baby proof space where they don't have to watch the baby's 24/7 and they can leave them for 10 minutes without thinking about choking hazards. What I don't get is why they don't give the baby's the smaller space
@whatsthestorymorningglory61

@@waldi23 I understand what you mean but you could create a baby proof living room space as well and put the tiny toy bits in the playroom. I also think it‘s easier to watch them from the kitchen or whilst sitting or reading on the settee? I would create a big playroom in the lounge, with all the bigger toys and use a separate room for the smaller items.

Choose the one you are comfortable with. I think it is good to have a separate room for the TV to focus without the presence of children's confusion, but I feel that it is better to have a large area for the living room, but it is not bad to experiment

I personally would definitely move the tv and lounge into the playroom and have a big open playspace for the babies in the living area... to me it seems a little inconvenient always being in a seperate room with them to play 🙈

Ah I totally get what you mean now about the babies needing more space than the big kids. Both ideas are great in my opinion, although I would lean more to tucking the living area away into the old playroom as it would feel nice and enclosed and cosy. The babies would probably enjoy roaming and exploring the house as well!!

I agree, moving the TV and couches will be easier. The babies are already playing in the open space, they’re likely to continue to play there and transfer all their toys as they start walking around anyway.

Why not let the older kids keep the big playroom, since they are six kids which requires quite a lot of space. Move the TV and two couches in the old lego room and let the babies play in the living area?

great job with changing rooms. I like the idea of a small lounge room where it would be a bit calmer. Having so many kids is wonderful when you can manage as well as you all do, but I´ll bet you all will appreciate a cozy place that is more grown up space.

One plus to moving the lounge room into the smaller room is that the babies will be able to see you and you can see them when you are cooking. My children never liked staying in the playroom when we separated it off. They would just bring their toys out to play with them where they could see me.
@kerriecu2

I thought the idea of the playroom was to house all the small toys and good books away, not to have a quiet TV room. Let’s face it, when is a house with eight children ever quiet. Keep the big children’s construction toys in the small room, then put a reading couch and some quiet toys or computer games in the old Lego room so you and Ro might have a quiet moment or one on one time with someone. Then you can keep the main room for everyone to use with baby friendly toys at accessible height on the bookshelves and more books up higher. Let’s face it a big area like that is the most suitable for everyone to be. The problem of babies in inappropriate kitchen cupboards is easily solved with locking devices and strategic placement. Good luck with the organising.

As a mum who is always re-shuffling my own house, and as an architect, I would advise you to imagine an entire day in your house, and how using the playroom as a sitting room would change the energy of the day. A smaller playroom for the kids is fine since they are at school part of the day. Switch out the toys in there while they are at school, they will get so excited to see what is available every few days or so. The babies need to be close to you, and get overwhelmed by too many toy choices. Have a few in the sitting room (or “the snug room” as I would call it) and different toys in the great room. Maybe softer, quieter ones in the snug room, to teach the importance of quiet, meditative time at the end of the day. I look forward to seeing what you design!

I like the idea of the lounge room being designated to the playroom. Being out in the middle of everything is better suited for the babies & 1 couch while the playroom being designated for TV or movie viewing & no toys. That makes a lot of sense. I also totally agree with taking some of the toys out & rotating them for the bigger kids. You're right that less is more.

In the US the living room and kitchen are the heart of the house so usually the living room isn’t tucked away and it’s normal for us to have kids running through. The main thing is to do what’s best for you and your children so you do you. :)

I’d put the table in where the playroom is, and put the playroom in the Lego room. Keep your main living space where it is but a sofa in the other room and then put some books from the bottom shelves in so it’s a library. Have some baby toys (big grimms etc) in the library where they can reach them. Have a baby play space in the two living spaces so that you can watch them even when you’re in the kitchen or sat at the table working but still have it the main room as the hub of the house. Now that the kids are older and wanting their own space more I’m sure they can go into their rooms to play with things that aren’t in the playroom.

I like your idea of moving the living area into the playroom. That way the babies and family have enough room to be together, and can explore in a larger space. The bigger playroom seems like it would certainly be large enough for your tv/lounge room. Great ideas, Chloe! 🌞

I like the second idea of moving the living room into the playroom, but I would make the living room into a combined playroom, not a baby playroom. I am sure there are a lot things the big kids and babies can play with just in different ways. Anything small can go into the smaller playroom, but keep the other items together so the kids can play together and the babies can have access to a greater variety of toys. Love the lounge idea!

I think the babies should have the playroom. I only have one toddler and can’t imagine trying to keep two away from the kitchen cupboards and all those books and away from the front door and what if one of the kids accidentally leave the bathroom door open or something. I much prefer to keep my toddler contained in an area that’s safe and meant for him.

Lounge to playroom would be nice, maybe the novels can go in there as well. Then have baby books down low on main room bookcase and higher shelves where toddlers cannot reach, have the rest of your books. Maybe have the area behind your bookcase turned into a playhouse with your kitchen set, scarves they play with, dress up clothes, dolls,... But keep it toddler friendly too. So fun to watch you plan and dream! Can't wait to see what you end up doing!

Poor Cosmo is desperate to be a big kid, bless him 🤗 My thoughts on the rooms, echo the majority - move the lounge. It will be easier to get stuff done whilst the babies play within sight and if the space feels too big to let them roam, perhaps pick up a playpen to contain them when needed? Your babies are so adorable. In the UK older houses don't have open living you have closed off kitchen lounge dining etc , I think creating the lounge in a smaller closed off space is good idea to try anyway. You could also give it a more adult feel so that you can a space to chill out in at the end of day. Your open space now lounge could be your child friendly space, lots of room for the babies to move around and put those larger toys in and for the older children to access.

I would definitely keep the playroom where it is -- there are way more older kids, and they need room to spread out and move around. They looked crowded in the Lego room, even when it was still pretty empty. Try rearranging the furniture in the lounge so as to divert the traffic path so kids are bypassing the TV line of sight. If you can keep the babies in the lounge, it's easier to keep an eye on them while you're in the kitchen.
