I have to agree with Austin, there is no point to a cloud gaming handheld when other devices such as your phone or the steam that can handle it unless the device is $100. However if you already have a phone why? The only reason this PlayStation handheld will be cool is, little curiosity here, what will the modding community do?

“if you already have a phone why?” The main arguments I can see are: 1) Screen size: Phone screens are advertised as 6.1” or 6.7” but the aspect ratio is more lopsided than a 16:9 TV, so when you factor in the black bars the in-game visible part on a phone is closer to 5”. A dedicated device can be 16:9, and the game will fill the whole screen. 2) Battery life: With a device like this, you don’t need cellular capability, cameras, etc. so you don’t need a top-tier SoC and you don’t need the additional chips to power those additional components. All you need is enough muscle to handle the UI, inputs, and the video stream. This means lower power draw and room for more battery compared to a phone of the same size.

@bubbledoubletrouble small issues for cloud gaming, but just get a steam deck, soen fo the cloud devices are the same price or just 150 cheaper which isnt much considering what you are buying amd you get way more put of it, if youncant afford it you definitely dont have the interent for cloud gaming, then you are really scrwwed or if the interent goes out or is javing abd day your device becomes a brick, with phones or switch or steam deck you can do stuff without the interent

A thing I think people miss with the "affordability" angle is that internet service is another cost that not everyone (even in the US) has. So for a lot of people it would make more sense to get something that will still allow you to still play without an internet connection. So the audience for this is actually sandwiched somewhere between the people that would want a higher quality experience like with the steamdeck and people who want something that doesn't depend on the internet. So it doesn't have as big of a range as y'all are thinking

My wild theory is that there will be two handhelds. The Playstation Q and the Playstation Q Lite. The Q would be a whole new portable console like the Vita / PSP, while also having remote play / game streaming options while the Q Lite only has those remote play options. The Q would be something like ~$350 in order to compete with the Switch and the Q Lite would be ~$150 in order to make it seem worth it for people who just want cloud gaming or streaming and nothing else.

That render looks nice imo. I really wish they would at least try going for offset thumb sticks. On regular dualsense controller, it is fine as it is but on mobile controllers it is not. Hopefully, they don't make a cloud only device because that just doesn't make any sense where the market is saturated with them be it the logitech or smart phones or whatever device it is. It needs to compete with the switch and steam deck. A fun use case head canon thing is if you can pair it directly to the PS5 as a controller and a second screen sort of like the Wii U but better. I would love to really see that

To be completly honest, I`m with Austin on this one... Why would I want to pay what it costs to buy something like a gcloud for cloud gaming, when for basicly the same price, I can buy a switch AND one of those bluetooth controllers that allow me to slot my phone in the middle, and play cloud games that way. On top of that, you can not only stream gamepass games from the cloud, but one of the xbox apps allows for remote play from the console as well... Devices like these only make sense (in my mind anyway) if they have enough power to play console quality games locally, or are cheap enough that I can justify buying it, instead of just buying a decent controller and using my phone. These are obviously just rumours and speculation, but wouldn`t it just be easier to allow for remote play via the PS app, and sell a controller specificly for this use case?

Remote play is already available via an app, albeit separate, and there is a *technically* official sony controller for phones, from a company called Backbone. To have a device that has built-in buttons that is to answer the question for you Austin. I bought a PS Vita and not just for the games that I could play on it and mod it but also because of the fact I could do remote Play with built-in buttons and native hardware
@ykvs
@ykvs Жыл бұрын
but austin also said that the market for that is low. I mean in what percent does psvita owners bought it just to use it for remote play? You said it yourself man you modded it. It was fun for use to use the hardware itself. I think if it is just a barebones controller, you wouldn't have bought it. For me it would make sense if the price is right. If it is cheap enough like buying a game controller (which is impossible) then the rumored handheld would be justify itself and it would be a great product. But if the price would be a full price console, nah men just buy a steamdeck or whatever then remoteplay with it.

I think the idea is pretty neat. I do understand it as such, that the handheld is remote playing the PS5‘s screen onto this device. With that Sony does not need to run big servers to compute games of tons of people. The computing is local on your own Playstation. The hardware itself could be much, and i mean very much, better than a Smartphone on a kickstand-remote play-Bluetooth DualShock-Hybrid kinda situation. I would consider such a hardware to being able to play my games on my actual own PS5 on the go when I have to travel or just want to lay in bed etc. and continue when i come back to my gaming setup/ big screen. The only thing would be the price. It needs to be affordable, for that what you get (a dumb controller with a built in screen and internet connectivity). Edit: even though it‘s Sony and it‘s probably gonna be kind of expensive, I still hope that I would be wrong since, they wouldn’t need extra servers for this..

I always follow Scott the Woz's words with cloud gaming "Cloud gaming has alot of potential as a supplement to regular gaming". He's right for the majority of people in that, most people are in rural areas that won't have a good internet connection to be able to utilize cloud gaming, and people like Matt mentioned where in areas like Brazil where consoles are expensive, and not to be disrespectful, but what is the chances they have a really good internet connection for cloud gaming? Probably not.

I was really into running emulators on my phone like 10 years ago. It seemed really cool and novel at the time. I even got an HDMI cable to play on my TV with a bluetooth gamepad. I think it was a Sony Xperia. The novelty wore off fast when I never had any battery for.. you know, using the phone.. as a phone. Also I couldn't charge the phone while it was plugged into the TV so that was a time limiter. My first Razer Phone faired well, but it would overheat like crazy after a while. I had to wrap it in a cloth and stick it in the freezer for 10 minutes to cool it off. I'm really happy having a dedicated device these days, the Switch has been great. No cloud gaming for me though. Yuck.

I feel like dedicated hardware only makes sense, if the connection technology is something that lets you play these games remotely, but without internet connection. So kind of like, remote play optimized bluetooth? It probably makes no sense, but to me it's the only way to justify that initial cost. Essentially, think of something you buy for your console to turn it into a Switch. Is it practical even then? I mean gaming laptops have a huge market, so it's possible.

I agree with Austin native for sure. Remore play as the selling point (Psp/Vita could also do for PS3 & 4 and a small audience uses) and that not enough info is there makes it harder to care about. Cloud makes it phone accessible without the console (PC has PS+/PSNow they had prior to get PC gamers accessing Sony service s besides their PC ports) same as the TV app on Xbox than a streaming box they had prototyped and cancelled. Cloud handhelds are android so ird a tablet eith controls on the side and cloud options so it isn't a paperweight when those cloud services aren't accessible at least or no internet access. ineed more info I care for remote play on Wii U and Vita with a PS4 but I don't ude it much (got so many games for different consoles to collect and play so). But yeah cloud I see why but remote play needs the console so its a bit pointless if a phone (android app since 2019 or iphone recently and that backbone grip) or PS4 app allows you to connect to a PS5. Need more info as otherwise PlayStation proprietary OS as usual and a remote play device is a paperweight without having native makes no sense. Dualsense features sure but a connection device isn't appealing. I can cast my phone to a TV if I want for non rv apps if I wanted with third party casting apps to project my phone if I wanted to.

Good convo! Loved the back and fourth ideas and freedom of ideas while throwing in opinions but still respecting the others ideas as well. I cloud game on my IPhone Pro 14. I can play any game on Xbox Games Pass , even online games like Halo multiplayer etc… it’s not the best experience but still good enough when I’m in my bed and want to chill and game at night. Win win situation I say 🦾

If it ends up being $100 I can absolutely see the appeal. You're getting a big 16:9 screen with proper attached controllers. On a phone you'd have to prop it up and use a normal controller, or buy some expensive attachable controllers that aren't as good as the dual sense. You'll also have a smaller screen, which get's even smaller because of the black bars on either side. The problem is that it wont be $100.

I agree and disagree with both because there's one factor that will make the difference to me. I would absolutely buy a dedicated cloud gaming device if it's in the $200 or under price point. Otherwise a Steam Deck or other device makes more sense

I wish sony made a handheld portable ps5 since they used to have the sony vaio back in 2006 that ran full windows that looks like a tmobile sidekick. Now gpd is making portable handheld devices with 2 separate operating systems, 1 with android and 1 with windows. I was interested in getting handheld gaming device from gpd but I could not decide on what to get since they have so varieties to choose from. Sony used to fit alot of tech and weird products that they used to make back in the 90s and early 2000s with small form factors. The pimax portable that I'm interested in has a 4k qled 144 hz mini led display running android and it's like the size of the nintendo switch with the optional external dock using the amd 6800u processor with 32gb ram and 1tb of ssd storage for streaming content locally and a 5g module for cloud gaming. I have the 10,000 mah battery case from zero lemon for my nintendo switch since the stock battery is not enough for the nintendo switch.

I 100% agree it should be native and not cloud or remote play based. I loved what Sony did with the PSP UMD discs back in the day. Is it not possible to have a system that would utilize micro SD card slots to store games and play them natively on the console? That would be the best solution IMO

The argument in my eyes here is more along the lines of convenience. Cloud gaming has potential for being more convenient to some people than other people while other people prefer going the extra mile for something with a better experience. The point about price is huge though because all of this doesn’t make sense at the price point but as soon as you get some pretty good hardware with a good price that lets you have more features it’s more tempting for people

The only handheld I've ever owned was a PSP. Not the Go or Vita. It was actually really good for what it was, with an internet browser and all. I ended up modding it to put emulators on, and played it for over half a decade before it broke. 😅 If they made something with native games, and left it moderately easy to break into (instead of locking it down), I would probably buy it as a handheld. Until then, I'm looking more at a steam deck. Kinda holding out for a steam deck v2. 😅 Maybe if the steam deck v2 comes out, and the original gets a price drop I might pick up a steam deck original

@@Adens3 there's been issues with the official Sony remote play app , I recommend trying to use the PSplay app it's a few bucks but works better then official Sony app , you also have to keep in mind the hardware you are running it on , I have the Razer edge and it has enough ram & wifi 6 built in fan & this is all streaming remotely from T-Mobile 5G home internet so yes it sounds like there's an issue with your setup somewhere on if it's just your internet or device itself

I agree that its dumb to add more cloud gaming devices to an already seemingly endless amount of devices that can do it. If the Playstation handheld can play games on device, then yes, make that. That's what we want more than a cloud gaming device. Compete with the steam deck because right now that's the handheld to beat.

I’m with Matt. If this was something that does great remote play at home and OK-ish cloud play away from home, it’s easier to market a distinct handheld than telling people to just use their phone. Little kids don’t have phones, for example.

Honestly, it has a place. I use my psvita for remote play all the time on my lunch break. That experience would be horrible if i used my phone as a touch screen is horrible for trying to play any game that isnt basic controls. Sony's device is great for the space for those like me, wanting an actual controller and not touch screen. Not everyone wants to carry around an extra controller with whatever brace thats needed to attach your phone to a controller for remote play or cloud gaming. Even the usb controllers that attach to your phone isnt something that people want to fiddle with. Just a dedicated device just for the service you want to use. Which is why I use my psvita for remote play and not just my phone. I tried the controller and phone method its not comfortable for me. More hardware is always welcome. There is a market for it, and there are those of us who want it. I highly doubt they are expecting everyone or even half of its user base to buy one. Im looking forward to its release. Gaming on the go has always been big for me. Too many places have long wait times even with appointments. And its nice to be able to play my Playstation games when im in these situations and have an enjoyable experience rather than a miserable one.
