Appreciate the video! As far as the products go, those 'updates' are kind of meaningless. If you're using a bushing die, you either need to be running it without the expander, or expanding with a mandrel die....in my opinion anyway. The perfect set is a Redding or Whidden FL Bushing die, and a Forster micrometer seater. :)

Expensive set up with all that fix in the base plate doesn’t matter how good the dies are at all. On the up stroke how many millimeters does your press fix? Stock base plate is better and yeah that lock ring totally sucks upgrade to Hornady lock rings with the quick change system where you can lock in those settings.

Precision is a matter of degrees. All these expensive bushing dies and micrometer seaters aren’t going to help much with factory rifles. I am somewhere between factory and the super expensive rifles you build. I trued a Remington action and installed an aftermarket trigger, Barrel and a budget friendly aluminum bedding block type stock. Using standard RCBS (carefully adjusted) dies on a Forester coax press My ammo shoots .3-.4 MOA groups off a rest. I have a feeling that I am the variable that’s limiting the rig from shooting better.

The RCBS instructions that came with this 2 die set says if you use a bushing you can't use the coated expander ball that comes in the sizing die, they say you have to change it out with the other decap rod that is included. So apparently you can use this die just to just push the shoulder back but if you are resizing it seems to me that the neck has to be reshaped as well. When you change the decap rod to the one included it has no expander ball or if that thing on the end is and expander ball it is way to small to resize the case mouth on the way out.I guess I'm confused as to how this is used. If I can use the sizing die with a bushing and still use the coated expander ball that comes installed in the die then resizing would be the same as how I used my other rcbs dies. Is this die a combination full length die and a necksizing only die?

@Notjay95

The expander ball can be used without the bushing like a normal die. The only reason you would want to do that is if it’s virgin brass and the neck is under the dimension of your bushing

Set the resizing die so it touches the shell holder than turn it .25 turn down so you have some cam over. This will give you. 0.002 shoulder bump. Also if you're using a bushing, replace the decapping unit that has the coated expander ball with the silver pin retainer that's came with the set
@blackdotpatrick
@blackdotpatrick 2 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why you have an expander ball in a bushing die. I thought the idea of the bushing was to size the neck as desired and not to have to have an expander ball.

@@terryblenkinsop8329 What I found is that these dies don't crimp the neck, instead they rely on the neck size/tightness to hold the bullet in.
@scottcrawford3745
@scottcrawford3745 2 жыл бұрын
There is NO crimp designed into these dies. Most match reloads are designed on the premise that the neck tension of the case is sufficient to hold the bullet in place for loading and recoil. The only firearms that seem to need crimps are autoloaders, where the action can cause bullet setback in the chambering process, or heavy game cartridges where there is sufficient recoil from firing that the extra cartridges in the magazine get slapped from the front hard enough to set the bullets back. A .243 shouldn't recoil hard enough to do that, and If it's a bolt-gun, you'll be chambering fairly gently. Crimping match loads,( other than a gentle taper-crimp as used on 7.62 NATO/ .308 match loads and 5.56 NATO/ .223 Match loads and a few other Hi-power match cartridges) can distort the symmetry of the precision match bullets you are using, particularly since bullets meant to be crimped have a cannelure in them, for the brass case mouth to have a place to go. Many , but not all Hunting bullets have a cannelure on them.. which is still optional. ( You can still just neck-tension hunting loads, cannelure or not.) Match bullets lack the cannelure. If you are single-loading the cartridges for target use, one-at-a-time , you definitely don't need a crimp. Standard, basic reloading Seating dies usually have a crimp at the top of the die. If you DON'T want a crimp, you just adjust the whole die to the shellholder ( with the ram in the fully UP position), then back it out at least a full turn. That should seat with neck tension only. If you want a crimp, you slide a loaded case into your shellholder, with the overall seating length reached , back out your seating plug a full turn, then bring the ram up full. Then you turn down the whole die until it touches the case mouth. then, adjust how much crimp you want by raising and lowering the ram over and over with 1/8 turns of the die each time until you reach your desired crimp, but not giving it SO much crimp that it rolls the neck into creating a bulge. Usually a gentle/slight angle on the mouth is sufficient, as the inside edge of the case will "bite" into the cannelure ridges and hold the bullet below the top edge of the ring. Then with the ram at full rise, bring your seater plug back down til it firmly touches the cartridge again.

@@blackdotpatrick Good question no one has ever really done a good study on that very question and actually provided reliable data. In my experience accurately measured loads what are all seated to similar depths provided the best accuracy. Most folks do not bore sight their rifles or even check which types of ammo fires most accurate through them not every load will work for well in the same types of rifles each is are different in minor details. I have personally had luck with bore sighting my rifles and scopes at one hundred yards along with up grading my triggers to include a lighter pull weight then working up loads depending on the distance I plan to hit targets at. But all of my ideas are just suggestions.

Don't need an expander ball with a neck sizing die. I'm sorry, even though RCBS makes a lot of good products, they're still behind the curve on precision die sets compared to REDDING Competition Die Sets. Plus REDDING provides three dies, not just 2: a seater, a body resize, and a neck bushing sizer. And I typically ad a fourth die to the sets: a LEE Factory Collette Crimp die for autolaoders, and when using moly coated bullets. I've been moly coating my bullets since the 90's.
