She was a virgin when she got pregnant with Jesus, that's why she's referred to as the Virgin Mary. And Mary is honored because God chose HER from all other women, as her soul was pure. Like the prayer says: 'Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.' To me, honoring one of God's chosen, may be a man made act, but she certainly deserves reverence. A mediator is someone who takes two parties that were at odds with eachother and brings them back together. Only Jesus can bring humans to the Father. That said, Jesus uses other people as instruments. So if you look up the word "mediator" in scripture you'll see all sorts of people described as mediators between God and man. These are understood as secondary causes-- people that Jesus is using as an instrument.
