It is actually constructed of Cor-Ten Steel, a mixed steel alloy that allows for a passive, protective layer of oxide...its designed to rust passively, creating a protective layer on the steel that doesn't require any painting. It's actually very innovative...still to this day.

The steel on the bridge was designed to rust to a certain point, and then it seals the steel and will not continue to rust. That's why it is not painted!
@buckrockerm
@buckrockerm 3 жыл бұрын
I was also going to point out the bridge’s steel is designed not to be painted. However the state doesn’t use salt near or on the bridge. My wife and I did the bridge walk before Covid. You actually walk across the bridge on a cat walk under the bridge. Not for those afraid of heights. Safe travels!

I'm went there in '84 when I was a teenager. We took the old winding switchback road down the side of the valley to the bottom where the old bridge crosses the river (if its still there). There was train tracks running along side the river if I remember right. My brother and I did some exploring and found a couple of caves and some old abandoned shacks.

If you had taken the next exit north, you could have taken the old road down the mountain and crossed the old bridge you showed in the video. It then winds up the other side and comes back up on the south side of the bridge, but on the other side of RT 19. Imagine having to take that route to travel from Summersville to Beckley before this bridge was built.

Glad to see that you found the New River Gorge Bridge. I have white water rafted multiple times down the New River. The pick up point was just after you went under the bridge. I don't know if they still do this, but once a year in the fall they would have what they call Bridge Day. The bridge would be closed so parasail gliders could jump off of the bridge.

Thank you Russ, Have crossed that bridge many times, the rhododendrons should still be blooming. WV is a beautiful state, was where I grew up. The saying is they should put a fence around it and make the whole state a National Park. I hope I can make one more trip home in my car. So many stops to make. I am so enjoying the ride with you. If you ever get a change you should see Cass, WV, old logging town with a steam train ride to the top of the mountain.

I asked about the color of the bridge and was told it’s supposed to be that color. That’s not rust that’s the finish on the bridge. New River Gorge Bridge was the Worlds longest single spanning arch bridge for 26 years. Now it is the 5th. I loved stopping here over the years to look out at the bridge. I got to come for Bridge Festival in October of the year of 911. It was a very beautiful day. As many that jumped off the bridge, were as many that were getting off the buses to do it again. People came from all over the world. You can feel the vibrations of the bridge under your feet when South bound traffic kept moving. They closed off the North bound lane for the festival. You did a really beautiful video of West Virginia.
