Slipknot is a very good introduction into proper metal. Their elements of math/power/death metal are easily digestible... And let's be real, they're a good fucking band.

From a musical perspective, what makes this amazing is the aggressive rhythm changes and vocal ranges. It’s not a demon voice. Its his vocal range capabilities. The guitar has incredible powerful riffs and great soloing. It get my blood pumping.

In the first place, he sings with that deep and raspy voice because it's a metal band XD, and the second reason is that he has an incredible voice and with a lot of range and he can sing deep and high-pitched at the same time, the truth is his voice is incredible if he wanted to I could sing to pop or whatever genre I want

He goes from that “demonic” voice to that “regular” voice because he only has one of the largest vocal ranges in history. They aren’t for everyone but cannot deny they are unbelievable musicians. RIP Joey and Paul. Give a few more songs a chance with a open mind.

Slipknot is... well, I guess you can say already a relatively old band. They started playing back in 1995. Corey Taylor (the vocalist) joined the band in 1997. Still, imagine singing with that growl for 26 years now!!! And he is still going, and doing well... I mean, he is almost 50 now, and had a few surgeries on his neck, still. Btw, his nickname "neck", is given to him for a reason. Just look at the size of his neck, thus his vocal cords. Massive! No wonder his range is so wide. Btw, Corey also plays in another band, called Stone Sour, it is complete opposite of Slipknot. Very, very mellow rock. I mean, talking about how wide his vocal range is... As for the masks, ppl commenting lower are 100% correct, I'll just add a few facts. Straight out they started wearing masks, and playing live with masks on, and for quite some time, they actually managed to hide their identities, but as they started becoming more and more popular, obviously, people and press found out who they were :))) Also they all design new masks for every new album they release. 7 albums, 7 different masks for each member. Also, they have been nominated for 8 Grammy Awards, and won 1, in 2006, for the song "Before I Forget"

There is an operatic technique involved in correctly screaming or roaring without hurting yourself. Also breath control and still pitch is present when screaming. It's not that difficult but takes practice and mindfulness to avoid injury. Some metal vocalists have no such technique and suffer vocal cord failure. Yes the fans have the same or more energy. I too am from Iowa, they're at least well known if not popular.

My assessment of your reactions: You listen to a lot of rap, so when you get the initial beat you know it will stay like that for 3mins+ (i.e. Rap God, California Love, etc). Therefore, the entire time you're focusing on the lyrics and bobbing your head to 4/4 beat. In Rock, however, the initial focus (in my opinion) should be on the music, the instruments, when it comes to a first listen. Because, if the music sucks, the lyrics don't matter. There are tons of fantastic lyrics in folk and country music, but most of the instruments there sucks and lacks creativity, so I never listen to the amazing lyrics (Bob Dylan). My advice to Rap listeners listening to Rock for the first time. If the instruments don't move you, fancy lyrics won't change your perceptive of the song. Listen to Tool without the lyrics, hear the riff changes, the movement of the songs, the patterns, then, when you read the lyrics, they will blow your mind. Example, the song Lateralus talks about breaking from the pattern, the convention, the "normal". All while the instruments are very patterned and the syllables are to the Fibonacci sequence. The instrument time signatures are very precise in varying degrees (9/4, 8/4, 7/8, repeat). Or Rage Against the Machine's guitar solos that sound like a DJ is scratching. etc. Or, in this case, the creativity of a "clank" of a baseball bat to a keg. Can you now, after hearing it, imagine this song without it?
