That's a very filtered remark. Religion came to be, not because, as you state, the desire to sensationalize natural phenomena. Nor was there a decision to forego rigorous study. Religion was developed when humanity didn't understand the complexity of life on earth, hadn't yet developed the scientific method, lived in constant fear of things they neither understood nor could control. It wasn't the plot of early conmen. It was the only way people had of understanding the world around them.

I imagine, if I were an early Native American living, let's say, in the hills of North Carolina, where food and water is abundant, the climate is stable and non threatening, and there is enough space for everyone to have their own, I would develop a theology of peace, abundance, and harmony. If I were of ancient Middle Eastern origins, where water and food are not abundant, the heat kills, and seasonal torrential storms wash everything away, and quality land to farm was in short supply, my God would look a little more harsh and unforgiving.
