New rules for traveling with pets on airlines. These travel tips and our experience apply mostly to dogs but we assume other pets are also included in these rules when flying or traveling. When traveling with dogs or using a pet passport in the UK, new rules have been applied in 2021 in regard to pets on places, emotional support animals, and service dogs or animals. The U.S. DOT has changed its policy on emotional support animals or pets on planes and flying with a dog in the cabin. We discuss our experience with one airline and traveling with our dog on plane in a pet carrier. If you are looking at how to travel with pets, flying with pets, or traveling with pet internationally, you need to hear these new rules and our experience before you travel.

Another thing...for those people who think that pets are just a "dumb animal"... Pets, especially dogs are BETTER than people. Its 1000% love and loyalty ALWAYS. No one can honestly make that statement about people.

This is so subjective, its incredible. Whoever is at the counter determines which dog can go and which can't. I cannot believe that TODAY when so many people have dogs and cats and wish to travel with their furry family members WE still haven't figured out proper, easy and safe ways to make it happen. I have two that fit any limit on board, but the other two dogs would have to fly cargo and I would never do that to them. I wish they offered on board larger dog space for the same price as a human ticket. I would totally pay for that!

As a single dog mom who traveled back and forth with a puppy from FL to CT from the time she was 5 months old (she’s now 2.5), I second everything you two are saying and am so incredibly disappointed with the experiences we have had since the law change…for many reasons. I am not in disagreement with there needing to be stricter restrictions in place OR having to pay. It’s a bummer to have to keep them in the carrier, but even that is understandable. What upsets me is that the law change was designed to practically eliminate animals on board all together. It is absolutely 1000% rolling the dice every single time we fly - and not just at check-in, at every. single. stop from there to the gate and then again once you step on board. If they like dogs and you have one who’s in their carrier seemingly unbothered, you’re fine…until you board the plane. If the flight attendant likes dogs? Wonderful experience. They ask if they need water and allow you to “bend” the rules a bit and unzip the top so they can feel less stressed if you have a dog friendly passenger next to you. If they don’t like dogs? You are bullied the entire flight and made to feel like you are putting everyone’s lives in danger by bringing aboard the “living carry-on” that you PAID the airline to take. It’s truly so disheartening and even despite all of the experience we have flying together, you never really know what you’re going to get. I have flown multiple airlines since the change and they have all been horrible and amazing simultaneously. I hope this conversation picks up somewhere on the internet…because for whatever reason people aren’t talking about it online. I’d love to hear updates on any travel you have done with your dog since…

Completely agreed. This is very stressful esp for having pet with flat nose (they are not allowed to cargo!). They only accept very tiny dogs in cabin. I feel so stressed by these policies changing requesting dogs to be smaller and smaller..

This is a great video to share awareness about the change in rules. You have to be very adamant about reading the entire policy of the airline your flying or the country you’re going to to avoid this from happening. American Airlines states on their website that “Pets must be able to stand up and turn around, fitting comfortably inside the closed / zipped carrier” and that’s pretty subjective depending on who is checking you in.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It is really sad and worrisome especially when you have a senior dog. I’m a dog mom in Japan and the county itself is NOT so dog friendly compared with the States. Our dogs are like our children so I really hope that many airlines reconsider to be more pet friendly 🙏

It really depends who's at the front and what airline. Delta is more pet friendly. We have the same carrier. My Shih tzu dog is 20 lbs and they allowed him. The front lady did not even weigh him nor look inside. My dog was in his carrier the whole time. We traveled from S. Korea to US with one stop over. My fur baby was fine and behaved the whole time. I remember when we were going to Kirea, it was a different airline. The lady personnel did not allow him either. At that time, my dog was 17 lbs. We did not even get to the main counter yet to check in. She was just some random lady personnel walking around and told us, our dog was not allowed. Unfortunately, me and my dog had to separate our flights from the rest of the family. Fortunately, Delta had an available seat that same day who accepted my dog. That's why, traveling back to US, we made sure to take Delta again to avoid problems like that. And Delta was awesome!! I applaud them for being so pet friendly. Our dog is not just a pet. He is a family. I will stay with him no matter what happens and find other ways or means to take him with us. DELTA Airline, I highly recommend and we will continue to use this airline.

No…Delta isn’t more flexible. I just messaged them and they were worse than American Airlines. American Airlines at least allows you to buy a second seat so you can put a second dog at the foot of your seat. Delta won’t allow that and won’t allow the cargo either. AA I’m not entirely sure that they don’t allow the dog as cargo.

I am so sorry you experienced this. I had a similar issue returning from a 2 week trip flying on American Airlines. I flew out of DC into Pensacola, Fl. with no problem. It was my return flight where I had my problem. An agent was Totally against me checking in with my 14lb miniature poodle. She said my dog was too big although he could go in his travel bag, turn around, and lay down. Totally subjective. She begrudgingly let me check him when I complained that he was allowed to travel into Pensacola with no problem. She said “ DC will let you do anything”. I am in the middle of a huge transition with a need to go back and forth. I’m worried every time I go because like you, I don’t know what I’m going to be told. I use ROVER and found a terrific sitter for short trips but for the longer trips, I’m praying a get an agent that won’t turn us away.

Thanks for sharing-I’m really sorry you had to go through this. A similar thing happen to my mom’s dog flying on Delta probably 10 years ago. To this day I refuse to fly Delta unless absolutely necessary. I was almost denied boarding to my Yorkie (7lbs) on an Alaska flight for carrier size. However I’ve never had that problem with Southwest. As a result I decided to shop around for other pet carrier backpacks to see if I could find one that clearly was safe to travel with. This proved very difficult-as most pet carriers, much less backpacks, don’t meet the 17" x 11" x 9.5" soft sided dimensions published online by both Southwest and Alaska. Sherpa’s website has a “guarantee program” for domestic flights saying that if your pet is denied boarding for only the size of the carrier, your flight and pet fee with be reimbursed by them. Alaska and Southwest are included in this. Interestingly, their pet carriers are larger than what’s published on the airlines’ sites-however Sherpa says that as long as the soft sided carrier can be compressed to fit the dimensions, then it’s usually ok. Moral of the story: yes it’s totally subjective based on the person checking you in whether they allow you to board. But I feel like the checker is more likely to deny you boarding if the dog carrier fits carrier dimensions per their rules but the dog arbitrarily “appears to big” for the carrier-rather than if the dog looks like they have a lot of space but it’s a bit larger than dimensions. I think that’s why so few soft-sided carriers actually meet those published dimensions. I’ve decided to just steer clear of Alaska just in case and fly Southwest whenever possible. Below link to Sherpa’s Guaranteed On Board program: sherpapet.com/gob/

that is such a difficult situation to have to deal with! My mother and I went through something similar when going to pick up our bernese mountain dog puppy in colorado 8 months ago (we live in MA so we were flying back to Boston). We were flying southwest back, the puppy was 8 weeks old 15 lbs and 3 ounces, he fit perfectly in the carrier (could get up, turn around-sprawl out). We went up to the desk to check him in and the lady was also not having it and was in the worst mood. She was telling us the the puppy barely fit in the carrier which was so untrue and that she was going to call over her supervisor to check out the puppy. The supervisor came over and looked at him, then looked back at the women checking us in and told her that the puppy fit fine. Thankfully we got onto the plane but the fact that she was giving us such a hard time even though the website told us he was 5 lbs under was unbelievable. Next weekend we will going to be getting another Berner puppy from the same breeder out there and are nervous they are going to give us a hard time again so we are going to be trying out United airlines and even bought 1st class tickets so he could have extra room to wiggle around. thank you guys so much for sharing your story it is so helpful to hear others discuss the difficulties with flying with pets nowadays!

Thank you for sharing this video!!!! A PRE-APPROVED process would be fantastic and save a whole lot of heartache & headache for passengers & airlines. By now you I would think some airline/s would have modified some of their seating areas to accommodate & designate specifically for pets. Even with the exact carrier requirements ( for United) , my carrier was still a bit difficult to fit under seat ( 18x11x11). This happened to me Thanksgiving of this year!!! I have a 13 lb, 5 month old petite goldendoodle and ran into this situation with United Airlines several days before Thanksgiving. I had just flown with her in Oct ( same route/ same airline) with no problems. Well, the only “minor “ issue was a rude flight attendant, who obviously did not approve of pets on airplanes! But, two days before Thanksgiving I arrived at airport, the attendant was ready to issue my ticket when another (sweet) attendant came by and started petting my pup ( her head was sticking out of carrier ( Big mistake!). As she pet her, my pup stretched out of carrier ~ and ticketer stopped😮 in her tracks, withdrew my tickets and said my pups legs were too long!! Oh no, ( 13 lbs, 13/14 inches) ~ she was absolutely comfortable when lying in her carrier ( 3 hr flight NC to Denver). So, we had to cancel our trip to join family for Thanksgiving!😭

The problem is there are some incompetent employees who don't know much about their company's policies. My place of employment is a good example. They will just tell you anything and will not bat an eyelash if you ended up in a bind. Even the front desk that denied your dog was probably also misinformed and know nothing and just acted like he/she owns the airline and can say and do anything he/she wants. Their pay is low they don't care about their customers. We had bad experience as well.

I travelled from kuwait to California with my cat and their service was above & beyond of my expectations. I was not only in business class which most airlines did not allow, but I was even seated at a bulkhead seat without a seat in front of me and they told me that leaving him in front of me was no problem at all. He was in his carrier by my feet which made him feel safe. During the flight, I took his carrier and laid it next to me on the bed and we both slept like babies. In the past, I did fly with my precious dog. She was 14 pounds. It was always a bit stressful with the flight attendants until I had her certified as a service animal. Once she was a service animal, even the attendants played with her and cooed over her. Bottom line, for those of us that are loving pet parents, we are always at the mercy of airlines and their employees. What is crazy is that most people on the plane are way more unpredictable than any pet I’ve ever encountered. And let’s not even talk about some crazy kids that scream & yell & kick your seat the whole way.

Im sorry to hear about this experience. Just had my own so I came to KZfaq to see if I’m alone. I get that they have rules for a reason, but I totally agree it depends on the person at the front desk. Literally today I flew out from Fort Wayne, IN on American Airlines. The people at the ticketing office were awful, they were kept pushing on my dog lightly to try to get my dog to stand up. Then I was rudely told to get him up, so clearly this individual doesn’t know dogs, couldn’t get him to stand at all. I was so incredibly put off by this airline and I have flown multiple times with American. Southwest is more pet friendly and I’m going to try another airline.

Hi Ciara - We haven't tried flying with our pup since this video but we did talk with multiple United reps and they said they did not care as long as our dog is in the carrier. I would recommend Delta. I flew with my dog last year to New York even though it’s not out the country I had no issues. They had me add him to my ticket and just had to do a health certificate(that they never checked). I will be flying with him again the end of August. Delta did not require a health certificate this go around but I may still get it done just to be on the safe side even though I was told he didn’t need it. I pray no problems though 🤞🏾 I can definitely update you when the trip is over.

@cetrisbrooks348
@cetrisbrooks348 2 жыл бұрын
@@nikkiijnc when I do it I reached out to the Delta text message customer service all the time. They had to check to make sure space was available so they asked me the type of dog, how much he weighs plus his age. Gave that info and they confirmed that he would be able to flight and it would be $95 each way. Then they asked about if it was a soft sided or hard sided crate. Told them it’s soft sided and provided dimensions to make sure it’s permitted for each aircraft. They did say mine is a bit bigger then permitted but since it was soft sided it would be okay. Idk how cause the plane I’m on is basically the same one we flew on last year. I’m using the same carrier. If your dog is able to move around though they should allow her but it just always depends on the aircraft weight limit too plus plane size. So I just strongly suggest checking with delta before your flight because she does have to be added to your ticket.

I am planning to take a dog by plane as well. The think is, that if they write the dog needs to be able to stand up, they do not mean just the body has to fix in the bag, they mean the whole dog including the head. And that is a big problem, if your dog is higher than 20cm

The craziest thing about this is the dog needs to be stowed under the seat in front of you so there is no way they could stand up when they are placed there anyway. So it makes no sense to me if the dog is the correct weight and the carrier meets requirements, which was your case.

A well-known Canadian airline has changed its service dog program following significant changes to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) rules on this topic. Starting on August 5, 2021, emotional support animals will not be accepted for travel in any cabin. As a result, and even though I am travelling domestically, this has affected my travel plans. My pet will have to remain in his carrier and I have to pay extra to bring him onboard. He is not even allowed out of his carrier in the airport before departure. I am extra nervous now travellling with my pug because of your experience. What a terrible thing to have happened. What makes it so unfair is that our pets are better behaved than some passengers. I even paid extra to sit in the first row between business class and economy so that his carrier will not be under a seat. Your fur baby is so cute. Safe travels in the future!!!

Youre not gonna want to read this but honestly your dog cant really stand up in that carrier with the top zipped. The fabric is stretching and the dogs legs are still very hunched. That would be like you traveling while having to bend over the whole time. When they say standing up, picture a small chihuahua, pomeranian whose head isn't gonna touch the top of carrier when standing, no bowing of legs etc.

Well that is the same for any human over 6 feet tall in economy class, their knees barely fit between two rows. By this logic people of certain height should be banned from flying too.🧐🤔

I always have so much fun traveling with my service dog. When someone starts to give me a hard time, i smile and ask if today is their last day working for this company. Then hand them an envelope and say thanks have a nice day ( enter their name here) and walk onto the plane...... Most air lines give my dog his own seat free of charge. :) i will say only 2 people have been fired that i am aware of. But you never know.......... If you travel into another country with your dog, even a service animal you need to get them cleared and most places want you to have a Passport for your animal. Mine has one, Traveling to the EU just make sure you are cleared to travel into France. France has the most strict rules for travel and pets.

i booked first class ticket $3,950 with my service dog and because my Pomeranian was 21 pounds, they asked me to send my dog home and shave my dog under the seat, and they also charge me $125 American airline, i had to leave the airport and take uber to my dog sitter and missed a full day for my travel. its all cause the flight attendant was rude. it was a nightmare and i missed a very important business meeting cause the airline changed their mind on my dog when we already seat down on the flight. and they didnt refund my money too. We just experienced this American Air which we booked ticketed us on Aer Lingus which is a no pet airline. fortunately, we noticed and cancelled. When we cancelled the ticket agent re-instated the ticket - We had to go to top mgmnt to get the ticket refunded. The ticketing agent then called us at home as harassment. This is routine for all airlines. BUYER beware.

Wow! What a horrible experience. I am taking my 13 pound dog to the UK via Dublin in June. So scary to think that this could happen. Perhaps for international travel where you need the pet travel certificate completed by a vet...perhaps it should be up to the vet to state if the pet is ok to be transported in the carrier.

I read about a couple who were on a connecting flight and had their dog in a carrier much like this couple. So when they brought the dog up to the counter the agent refused them entry. So they were terrified that they would be stuck at the airport. However, their suitcases were already in the cargo hold so the couple demanded that they wanted their luggage if they couldn’t board the flight. The couple told the attendant to call the captain of the plane. The pilot showed up and heard that they already had flown on another plane and this was their last flight home. They also told the captain that they needed their luggage returned to them at the airport if they were denied the flight. However, the hassle of finding their luggage without removing a substantial amount of other luggage would have delayed the flight. The captain overrode the attendant and they boarded. If you are denied due to an attendant, try getting the pilot signed he/she have the last word. Not sure if this will always work, but an attendant who makes ill judgement calls due to attitude or misconceptions is way too much power.

That was so sad and concerning😢. But “some” flight attendant do be waking on the wrong of their bed with American Airline. @americanairline #americanairline I had a bed experience flying with my one year old baby with an flight attendant. He was very unpleasant to my and my baby. He wouldn’t let her playpen bed go. We did not bring a stroller due to that and was told it’ll be fine. #2. The playpen bed was actually smaller than a stroller and car seat. It was a bad experience & almost miss my flight. When I told him that please sir I’m about to miss my flight. He said to me I’ll make sure you miss your flight🤔. I felt hopeless. Then I blew out I was able to get the attention of the supervisor. He rushed over and came to assist me. He apologized million times to me then said he will deal with him which I’m hope he did. Thank God I didn’t miss my flight due to that life saver nice supervisor. So, again rather is a puppy or baby some it’ll depend on who has or loves kids or pets… now I’m thinking of getting my baby a small pet that’s a concern to us because we do travel. so sorry to hear that.

The woman said it wasn’t right anyway the dog and I’m dying on the flight because of the stupidity of a worker because they want to be in control all the time I understand that it’s a stressful job, but if you cannot work with people and by the rules that are written in their statements, then they shouldn’t be working there. They make up their own rules if they just don’t like.
