The 2v2s were fun to watch. I think this game is more fun in team modes, but wish there was a better way to communicate with your teammate than a singular type of ping.

I'd like to see them add 2 more unit slots that hold casters/"structures"/support units. Also mortar would be nice if it took longer to siege/unsiege and had less hp, right now they're impossible to jump on. Also, I think there should be more units and have it not take as long to unlock units.

They sound like battle droids from the Starwars Prequel trilogy had to take a moment to not bust a gut laughing

TLDR: by keeping the traditional avenues of hedging advantages over your opponent in RTS games, and shrinking the time frame for all of this to happen, the game has created something far more stressful than playing StarCraft 2 in Silver. In a way, Battle Aces is to StarCraft 2 what StarCraft 2 with increased starting workers was to StarCraft 2 before that change. The time to mentally warm up is shrunken and burnout is inevitable for those who are not built for it. I think winter has a point with his rant about complexity not being a true barrier to entry, but I think he misses an important detail. In games like League, Dota, and even fortnite to some extent, the games start extremely simply and ramp up their complexity as the game progresses. In a MOBA, Instead of having to understand what is happening in a 5v5 team fight as soon as you start playing, you start a game with 1 character with 1 ability, and only a few item choices. If you are laning against even 2 people, they each only have 1 ability. You have time to adjust and learn inside of your game to what is going on. It takes minutes before people are even level 2 and have a second ability. It is also pretty laid back at the start of every game for quite a few minutes. I think Battle Aces starts the match similarly with its very limited choices of what you can do. 2 units you can play, expand for more income, or tech 1 of 2 directions. What I think Winter was getting at with the game “not being for casuals” is that, the actual tactics involved in playing the game create so many different choices that it is actually deceptively complex. I think the most obvious contrasting example of this is: In league, you do not worry about being “back-doored” in the first 20+ minutes of the game, but, in an RTS, this is a constant threat in what we commonly call runbys (back-dooring is the action of avoiding/sneaking around your opponents to attack important buildings behind what would be the perceived line of scrimmage). As I considered what Winter was trying to express, what I interpreted he was trying to say, it actually began to really make more sense why people enjoy MOBAs over RTS. I used to think it was entirely because of only having one unit and being able to avoid total responsibility for losing through having teammates. I still think those two things are VERY important for replay ability, but now I realize that those games are set up in a way that allow you to slowly warm up to every match. RTS games do this, but in a MUCH shorter timeline. AoE is probably the slowest, but you can still have someone harassing your workers a minute in with a scout, testing your APM. Even with Battle Aces simplicity, your knowledge and APM is being tested immediately. In the first second you are being asked a time sensitive question: Should you expand, tech, or rush out units? Your opponent can bait out a fight in the first minute and send wasps in to “back-door” your workers. This is extremely intense for anyone, but especially someone who is more casual or expecting a simplified RTS experience. Basically, by keeping the traditional avenues of hedging advantages over your opponent in RTS games, and shrinking the time frame for all of this to happen, the game has created something far more stressful than playing StarCraft 2 in Silver. In a way, Battle Aces is to StarCraft 2 what StarCraft 2 with increased starting workers was to StarCraft 2 before that change. The time to mentally warm up is shrunken and burnout is inevitable for those who are not built for it.

I played a little bit last week and that was my experience. However all those things are why people like to watch rts rather than play it competitively.

I noticed this from the get go and the this was my main concern for the game. I feel like rts is always going to be niche for this reason in comparison to other genres because it just demands so much. One thing I also disagreed without the gate was the idea that simplifying macro to almost non existence would attract casuals. I think this is completely untrue. Winter touches on this slightly but I believe what a lot of casuals like in rts is the feeling of building your own base. In fact if you look at a game like aoe2 a lot of low elo players just like making a castle with big walls and turtling. Aoe2 has been growing despite it being a much more complex rts game in comparison to sc2 and I believe it is due to how the macro in the game works.

I agree, casual plaayers like to build bases and just build and build, this game is basically get in and micro all the way, and while microing units is fun it also kinda takes a lot of focus straight away. But it's really fun to play, just not sure if beginners can play it all that way?

Agree. I would also add that when he mentions the lack of defender's advantage that is also huge. It's also the reason that mortar are so powerful, they are basically the only unit with defender's advantage. It also make the split second decision of the game way more critical. Since defenders advantage works as way to "pad" mistakes, if i make a mistake and lose some units as long as what i lost is not enough to overcome my defender's advantage then i'm still in the game even if i'm a bit behind. Here the lost is quite huge, specially when you get into t2

It's funny when all those developers use all their book and "psychological studies" "knowledge" to create the most simple, understandable, casual friendly shit, but get destroyed by 20 year old FAR MORE COMPLEX game like AoE2. Doesn't seem like they understand where the problem lies.
