I reverted to Islam 7 years ago. As a new muslim you don't really understand the religion and have to rely on what people say to you. Coming from a strict background being raised mormon I was always super strict with myself. When it came to Hijab I felt like I'm going to hell not wearing it. I wore the Hijab for 4 years and about 1 year ago, after doing thorough research I decided to take it off. I feel like fundamentalist Islam that was shaped by history and the thirst for power and control is so dangerous and oppressive. Dr. Ally is the only person I found online that actually talks sense. Thank you for your videos.

It's really hard to hold the prophet's wives as the standard when Q33:32 specifically says they are not like any other women. The Quran also says the good deed are double & so are their bad deeds (if any). I'm loving this series because it gives a very deep look into the matter which is much needed at this time. It’s funny I am in my early fifties and when I was growing up in Somalia no one wear the so called hijab in Somali culture historically women used wear a turban when they get married it was a sign that they were married today many Somali women wear burqas because most Somalians became neo Wahhabi we used to mainstream Muslims and men and women dress decent I as a nondenominational Muslim Tawheed centric Muslim don’t cover my hair just follow universal Islamic principles and ethics.

Islam is for all times and all places. It is not monolithic. The Qur'an e Sharif, does not mention that Muslim women should wear hijabs as we hear Dr Ally in this video. Surely, its what's in our heads and hearts, hence our actions, that brings us closer and closer to the Divine and not what's on our heads. With great respect for cultural traditions, such as mens pristine flowing robes and head gear of Arabia and many womens wearing hijabs in Indonesia for example. But as evident, peoples dress codes change in communities that evolve into cosmopolitan, meritocratic and pluralistic societies - from Indonesia t Turkiye to Canada. I 100% agree, in the past you just automatically think that we HAVE to wear hijab. Over a year ago after a lot of struggles me and my wife decided to do through research and after couple of months she decided to take her hijab off BUT dress modestly. It's important that every do their research something that wasn't possible in the past. Also important that we understand Allah (swt) emphasises on covering the sexual gaps and dress modestly. Islam is a peaceful religion and not a struggle as a lot of people made us believe it is...

I really wanted Dr Shabir Ally to make a series of videos on hijab for a long time, & now it's finally happening Alhamdulillah. Dr Shabir made it clear in his older videos that he doesn’t believe covering the head is mandatory for women, according to him women are allowed to expose their hairs. But those videos were short and he didn’t discuss much about the hadiths & positions of classical scholars there, he only talked about the two Quran verses in short. I'm very curious to know how he views the hadiths & opinions of the classical scholars on hijab.

Not until the past 25 years or so, many muslim women wear hijab in my country, i don’t know why, because it was not common prior to that.. and it become more and more compulsory nowadays (as if you are not a good muslim - even to the extent you will go to hell - if you don’t wear them) But I believe Quran and Islam is a religion for all mankind, and is compatible with all ethnicities and cultures.. that different culture in clothing does not hindered one to be a muslim… the important thing is to wear a decent clothing, and that will be better for your own protection. Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) and his followers including women dressed what was existing at that culture at that point of time. Quran prescribed us to dress modestly and added to cast women’s outer garments on their bosom. If you think precisely you will realize that how difficult it is for a woman to do ablution before the prayers. That’s why Allah didn’t command to cover the head or hands because they have to do ablution five times a day.

I'm not muslim but I'm interested in learning about Islam. A friend of mine (man) once told me that he didn't understand that so many muslim women, probably the majority, wear a (real) hijab or a scarf wrapped around their head. To his opinion as a man, a woman's hair/hairdo is really not what catches men's eye, specially if the woman has heavy makeup (and specially lipstick) and wears tight pants (which clearly shows the bottom because of a very light top covering it up). Some (muslim) women are very keen on fashion and... also on covering their hair and the result may be quite absurd.

I really appreciate you both for doing this series. However, I did find the passage quoted by Dr. Safiyyah troubling. It sounded like it was saying a woman should dress a certain way in order to prevent herself from being the victim of s*xual violence. Did I interpret that correctly? If so, I think that's really bad. In fact, there have been female protesters in Iran that have been victimized in that way because they wore what was seen as immodest clothing. The idea being that if you don't dress modestly than you are asking for that to happen. I'm not accusing Isam of being uniquely victim-blaming, but that passage did seem like it was blaming the victim. I actually had a (Christian) parent say they were disappointed *in me* when I told them that I survived that kind of violence, so I know personally how damaging victim blaming can be.

The Qur’anic verse obligating women to cover their hair is as follows: “Tell the believing women to…draw their headscarves over their chests…” [Qur’an 24:31] Different translations of the Qur’an have rendered the Arabic word khumur [singular: khimār] as ‘veils’ [Yusuf Ali], ‘scarves’ [Abdul Majid Daryabadi] and ‘shawls’ [Taqi Usmani]. Even though it is common to use the word ḥijāb nowadays to refer to the headscarf, the word used in the Qur’an was khimār. It is important to understand that the word used only has the meaning of a headscarf, and not any other article of clothing. It cannot refer to a scarf that is draped around the neck nor to a shawl that is used to cover other parts of the body. The word khimār [meaning headscarf] is similar to the word ‘hat’. Both of them are used to cover the head. Therefore, if someone were to say, “make sure your hat covers your ears,” the covering of the head would automatically be implied in the sentence because that is what the function of a hat is. Were someone to argue that since the head was not explicitly mentioned, they could dangle a hat off each ear and this would fulfill what the speaker said, it would be dismissed as ridiculous. Likewise is the case of someone who assumes the verse is telling women to use a headscarf to only cover their chest area and not their head. This should serve as a sufficient answer to people who ask, “Where does Allah tell women to cover the hair in the Qur’an?” One might ask why Allah used this manner of speaking. Why didn’t He just mention that women must cover their hair, in plain and clear wording, so that there would be no confusion among people today? In order to answer such a question, the historical context in which the Qur’an was revealed must be understood. Women in many parts of the world used to cover their hair. In Arabia, they used a headscarf which would cover their hair and then they would drape the ends of that scarf behind their shoulders.[1] The verse clarified to women that this is not sufficient for modesty because the neck and upper-chest areas are exposed, so they must drape their headscarves over their chest areas to make sure that part is covered as well. Since women were already covering their head there was no need to tell them to cover it again. The case is similar to a corporation that tells their employees the dress code at work requires everyone to ensure that their shirt is buttoned up to the top so that the upper-chest area is not exposed. It is common culture for people to already wear shirts to work so there is no need to explain to these employees that the shirt must cover their entire back, stomach and chest areas: that would be redundant and unnecessary. Another angle to look at this issue from is to consider what the implications of the contrary argument would be. I have personally heard several people arguing that the ‘chest’ referred to in the verse is speaking about the breasts of a woman. The argument goes that Arab women used to not cover their breasts in public and the verse is ordering them to cover up. If this was the case, and if the verse required only covering the chest, as is claimed, then the rest of the verse would appear very problematic: “Tell the believing women to…draw their headscarves over their chests…except in front of their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons…” This reading would imply that a woman does not need to cover her chest [i.e. breasts] in front of all the male relatives mentioned. It is doubtful that people who make such an argument would be comfortable with such a conclusion. The final point worth mentioning is that, as far as I know, no recognized Muslim scholar for at least a thousand years after the revelation of the Qur’an has ever made an argument to the contrary about women being required to cover their hair in public. Furthermore, no Arabic linguist, as far as I know, has ever argued that a khimār is anything but a head cover. This is significant because it would mean that people who do make such an argument, namely, that a headscarf is not a requirement, have discovered something which eluded Muslims for centuries. It has not been a matter of legitimate scholarly debate in the past and it is highly unlikely that something so significant, and public, would have been completely misunderstood for such a long time. It is more probable that people who do make such an argument are, intentionally or otherwise, using intellectual gymnastics to ‘reinterpret’ the Qur’an to mean something that it doesn’t. Following the tenets of Islam is a choice. Choices should be grounded in accurate information. It is hoped that this explanation clarifies what the Qur’an really says on this issue.

I understand that these episodes are for the benefit of non Muslims who are interested in learning more about Islam and that is why Dr Shabbir keeps to the Qur'an and Sunnah and does not delve into jurisprudential details. Muslims should let Dr Shabbir do his work and not nit pick too much about sectarian issues or the lack thereof.

Dr Shabir Ally previously stated in his video that hijab is not mandatory, but didn’t delve much deeper into hadiths. Hopefully in this series he will go across all the hadiths and the scholarly opinions regarding hijab, since his position on hijab seems to be contradicting with most of the other scholars out there.

All you have to say is, no. women can dress freely and have hair freely. Men can dress and have hair and beard freely.

Dr. Shabby is definitely better at comparative religious debates. However, in this type of topics I found his arguments to be a bit scattered and not clear cut.

Has anyone ever pondered on why Allah gave women hair on their head? The hair on a man's head serves as a natural decoration and other very important functions and it belongs to him and him alone. A woman's hair belongs to every one who sees her. And if they have a bad thought seeing it, who is to blame?. So It isnt really hers it belongs to everyone else. Is that how Allah created the female hair does it become evil by the thoughts of men whom Allah created to think like this. What does Allah mean with this? Did he create human males as the natural predators of the human female? Are males beasts and females victims or is there harmony between the se*es and the only outcasts are the evil ones not the ones we are created to please by doing their job for them. They will still have evil thoughts even if a woman is covered top to toe that is the reality. Allah has not asked us to fix a 'natural' problem it isnt natural for men to see women as s*x objects it's the believe that it's natural that creates the problem in the first place , and men suffer for it, they lack self control and end up in very regrettable situations. Boys become men when they learn and practise restrained. Allah didnt create them as weak, incapable, pathetic and desperate beigns. Even before the message of Islam, one finds several verses in the Bible concerning dress codes, appearance and modesty for both men and women. There is considerable consistency there throughout the revelations. “A woman shall not wear a man's garment, nor shall a man put on a woman's cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God. (Deuteronomy 22:5) “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes” (1 Timothy 2:9, NIV). "O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever OftForgiving, Most Merciful" (Al-Ahzab 59)

The head-covering doesn't exist in the Qur'an, plus it's not called hijab, it's referred to as khimar. The only women Islamically who were to have a so called head-covering was the wives of the Prophet(Pbuh).

The only thing the Quran mentions is to put on a clock it doesn’t say cover the head.

Narrated `Aisha: The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqi` at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. `Umar used to say to the Prophet (ﷺ) "Let your wives be veiled," but Allah's Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam`a the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) went out at `Isha' time and she was a tall lady. `Umar addressed her and said, "I have recognized you, O Sauda." He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of "Al-Hijab" (A complete body cover excluding the eyes). Bukhari 146.

Riyad as-Salihin 1626 Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) said: I was with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) along with Maimunah (May Allah be pleased with her) when Ibn Umm Maktum (May Allah be pleased with him) (who was blind) came to visit him. (This incident took place after the order of Hijab). The Prophet (ﷺ) told us to hide ourselves from him (i.e., observe Hijab). We said: "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), he is blind and is unable to see us, nor does he know us." He replied; "Are you also blind and unable to see him?"

Over a period of time (perhaps a hundred or more years), these four Books became known simply as “The Gospel”, or “The Good News”, or “The Injil”. Again, the “Injil” is not a set of books that God that revealed or delivered to Jesus. Jesus is God; and God cannot reveal or deliver “Injil”, “Gospel”, or “Good News” to Himself.

Originally, the covering of women was part of the circumcision, because the Muslim leaders who implemented this practice have treated the women as primarily sexual objects, and Islam never had much emphasis on self-control/circumcision of the heart, so the covering of women was their method of avoiding the sexual urges in men, while the hijab is basically a lighter version of the niqab, and a result of changes that were influenced by the western world, but it's still a symbol of sexual objectification and have no other purpose.

So many rules are needed to earn salvation in Islam. The only exception is dying in holy war.
