Direct engagement hubs rock. I ride onxy hubs with direct engagement. These hubs are better for my knees with no slip or slop from the outdated pawl hubs. The sound from pawl hubs are friction of the little clutches rubbing then the slip is the gap of engagement. Glad to hear shimano is offering the new tech hubs.

The play in the freehub actually helps me generate initial momentum on my first pedal stroke which greatly helps when i have to restart on a climb, letting my foot accelerate a bit downwards before the freehub bites. This generates additional initial torque, just like in car drag racing where you rev your motor first before you let go of the clutch which helps launch the car forward.
@mashkina
@mashkina 2 жыл бұрын
For me it is totally the opposite: it is like pedaling 20 degrees (18-tooth ratchet) for nothing, and when the hub engages, you hear that “clunck” sound. Horrible. That is with a 105 ratchet. In my other bike, fulcrum with 32 teeth, the experience is much much smoother, but still not perfect.

You’re getting the far superior hubs and build consistency of the wheel quality for that price. I’ve got an older pair of DuraAce c50 wheels and they have at least 20k miles on them and never have even been out of true or needed hub maintenance, and I’m over 200lbs to boot. If I was getting wheels for a commuter or my sons bike, or if I were a short lightweight rider, I would definitely get some Chinese wheels.

No wheels for caliper brakes because they are old fashioned but hey we will retain cup and cone bearings.... :-)
@lustyd
@lustyd 3 жыл бұрын
The difference being that a better solution has been created for braking. Cup and cone remains the best option for racing wheels due to lower resistance. Cup and Cone also allow pro mechanics to maintain them before every race. Sealed bearings are a cost cutting measure for hub manufacturers who don't have Shimano's expertise. They are also easier for amateur mechanics to replace. Dura Ace and Ultegra are not aimed at that market.

@@Jkl158 No sealed have more resistance due to the casing. They also don't (easily) allow you to use different grease for a race compared to training like cup and cone does. All of this well known to racing teams the world over, it's amateur mechanics who sing the praises of sealed bearings, usually because they don't know how to adjust a proper hub!

The silver lining is that the future 105/GRX 12speed group sets will finally be able to replace the 3x systems in the touring/adventure/tandem bikes. A combination of a 50-34 crankset with a 11-34 cassette (or even a 48-31/11-30 pair) will have both the range and a plenty of single-tooth jumps. A dynamo in such applications could also charge all the Di2 mechatronics.

What happened to Jon.... he usually does these presentations. I hope he's alright. I like Jon. All of GCN presenters are impeccable. I like that spanish guy. He's got a slicker haircut now and looks a lot faster than anyone else.

Why cup and cone instead of sealed bearings? Understand not likely to get dirt in but how does that not cause issues with the hub being worn out by the bearings like old cup and cone designs?
@hzmeister9596
@hzmeister9596 3 жыл бұрын
Cup and cone bearings are actually superior in nearly every way. If you keep up with maintenance they'll last forever. Sealed bearings have the advantage of being able to replaced by the second owner of the wheels after the first owner trashes them. Also from a subjective point of view nice cup and cone wheels always feel faster to me.

Could you swap an XTR freehub body to use an XTR cassette with these? I dont ride road but it's an interesting question. Both use Direct Engagement freehubs.

It's a shame you didnt want to take the hub apart (because you were told not to) to show us the direct engagement. Sometimes its the lack of details like this that reduces some the GCN videos to simple advertorials

Do the wheels come taped for tubeless direct from Shimano?
@odiesdad01
@odiesdad01 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they do. I just picked up my new Pinarello Prince with the new Ultegra group and Dura Ace C60 wheels. Had the wheels set up tubeless with Pirelli P Zero tubeless tires. No extra tape required.

At the end of July I switched my Roval cl50's for Zipp 303 firecrest wheel's. I would still get the Zipp wheels if I had the choice between them or the Shimano(I'm digging the cup&cone bearings). Zipp 303 firecrest are made in Indiana USA, which makes the union man in me feel good.

Had the previous version Ultegra C50 and Dura ace C50. Their slow hub engagement (clunk) everytime I pedal was a turn off for me. Fat spokes made noise in the wind. Nice looking wheels and that was all I thought of them. Hope the new hubs have better engagement.

The Shitmano engineers are such masterminds, radialt lacing on the disc side plus leaving every second spoke out :o This is out of the world stuff! Hands down, they reinvented the wheel.

No sealed Palin.. Not gonna want them. Last time I swapped my disc with centerlock on 4050 shimano hub..... I found the inner drive lock on from the factory.. Meaning I had to pull the axle to get the rotor off.. And that wheels been a dick to me since despite putting the right Centerlock on cleaning and repacking.. So my deep section wheel is going to Winter duty and My DT SWISS front is going on my Commuter bike. I run a 120 click triple clicker 5 Palin rear as well.. Didn't like the DT Swiss rear hub.

Anyone put 28mm or 30mm tires on these wheels? How do they fit, do they keep with the aero profile with the 28mm or 30mm tires?
@RafyelBrooks

I've switched between Conti GP5000 TL 28mm, and Good Year Eagle F1 28mm, and PZero TLR 28mm and they're spot on flush, on the C50's. The wheels feel great and not as harsh as perceived from the commentary.
