@@DavidManningvlog I'm torn. I've been saving up for the FX30 for some time, just because I wanted to upgrade my a6400 for school (I'm a film student) but I also love taking pictures so I was kind of hoping for something more hybrid-like. My plan was to get the FX30, use my a6400 as a b-cam, and then upgrade to a better hybrid camera once I started making some actual money with my gear. I will still want the FX30 for the thermal management and dual card slots, but now I'm thinking I should just buy this one now, still use the a6400 as my b-cam, and then trade that one in once I have money scraped together for the dedicated cinema camera.

Nice review, thank you ! For those who doubt... I've used the Sony 16-55 mm f:2.8 zoom, you show with this new A6700, for about three months. This is the best lens I've ever owned and one of the top 5 I've ever used. Sharp and detailed as one can hope, allowing skilled image-makers to use it "as is" for news coverage or corporate, or add a soft-effect filter and turn it into a cinema lens without losing any sharpness. Rent this lens, test it... you'll buy it. Then, one comment... it's now more than time to stop using this full/cropped vocabulary. How can anyone still name a 24x36 (the actual size) sensor a "full-frame" when Phase one bodies offer 40x53 mm sensors with a total resolution of 150 Mpix ? Which one is the real "full-frame"...? I can answer : none. It's time to act seriously and use fundamental informations : Sony cameras such as A7SIII have a 24x36 mm sensor, cameras such as A6700 have 16x24 mm ones, cameras such as RX10M4 have 9x13 mm sensors. Now we know where we go, now we can give proper places to each camera/sensor duos, now we can judge/rate/choose. Aftet all, we use exact (focal) lengths for lenses... why not for sensors and sensor "families" ?

I have been shooting exclusively full-frame, but got the A6700 with 16-55 and 70-350 lenses as a lightweight walk about set-up. It has been a revelation, I love the smaller form factor and lightness to carry and really cannot see any reduction in quality, the only real downside is less bokeh, but that 16-55 lens is very near the 24-70 GMii in image quality, while the 70-350 can easily replace both my 100-400 and 200-600 lenses with again near equivalent quality at a fraction of the weight and cost. So in future will use for nearly all my daily casual shooting and travelling, and only take out my full frame setup for serious shoots. My aging back will appreciate it, and selling some of the full frame lenses I will now no longer use will more than pay for my new APS-C kit.

Agreed! I own the a7iv. Before that, I had the a7iii until the shutter failed. I set out to buy a used a6400 for a trip to Asia - just to downsize my travel kit. But the big drawbacks to the a6400 is the old tech & the small battery. When I rented the a6700, I was blown away! The new tech includes the AI chip and it uses the same batteries & chargers I already own, I just couldn't resist. It's a little bigger than the a6400, but way smaller & lighter than the a7iv! And the quality is amazing. Pics look just as good as the a7iv if not better. I'm currently rockin a rented Sigma 18-50m for my trip, but I may end up with the Sony 16-55m long-term. I'm still deciding. The Sigma's small footprint is hard to beat! Thanks for a great review.

It's a tough call, especially now! I used to just immediately say to go full frame as soon as you can afford it, but using this camera for a month made me pause massively on that. I think if you want the lowest depth of field with the highest quality possible, I still think full frame is the route to go, but I don't see it as the massive leap that I used to

Upgrade til the A7c ii comes out 👍 I would’ve auto bought this if it had 6k. Now I’m thinking of waiting for the A7c II. A huge factor tho is the lens sizes. Some of the apsc lenses are so small, you can have a great compact setup that you can carry everywhere. If the A7c II is still a long way off, I might buy this and sell it for a small loss if the A7c II ends up being a lot better.

I just got this camera the other day. The screen not being 90° did kinda throw me off and I thought I got a faulty one or something. Never seen anyone else mention it in the many reviews I watched before. Good to know it’s actually the way it is haha good positive review. So many rip into the overheating thing. Managed to pick up the camera for 1900 aud (Aussie) and the 10-20mm pz for 500 aud. $1540 usd. Pretty wild value. Getting used to auto focus after 7 years on the Gh5 is a bit of a learning curve for sure. Think a few more years and it’ll just read your mind on what you want it to focus on haha

I use the a6400 for my videos on this channel. I only film 1080p 60fps, and my camera is rigidly mounted so I don't need image stabilization. I would upgrade to this new camera if I was filming some kind of competition where I would want to record in 4K 60 or 4K 120 so I could both slow down the footage and zoom in without losing resolution.

That was such a good review for the a6700. But how have you never used apsc? Lol. Also, your quick math was impressive. I have to calculate those on my phone lol. It's a great camera for anyone wanting to get into the sony system on a budget. Or anyone with sony a7 series that sometimes wants a small travel camera or b cam. A few limitations, but for the price, it's great. My work cameras are an a7iv and a fuji xh2.

Not just 4K/120p but 4K/120p at 1.58 times crop, with significantly lower image quality and overheating much more quickly than 4K/60p or 30p. That's more like a better description.

Hell, I have an a6300 that I still use from time to time. I can still grab a lot of awesome shots with it. Even my a7II gets use from time to time. This will be welcomed into my camera lineup and I’ll use it with all sorts of awesome glass I have. I will admit that I need to find a good super wide for it, but that’s not a deal breaker. I can use my 16mm with it none would be the wiser to it. My 30mm & 85mm primes will almost be doubled so I’m thinking that I’ll have to grab something along the lines of the Tamron 35mm - 150mm F2.8 to handle pretty much everything else. I could essentially just carry two lenses in my camera bag and be done there! Thoughts? Questions? Dirty words?

I have been using full frame after migrating from an APS-C at the end of 2020. This year, I started to explore more about making videos for memory's sake, now that I am about to complete my study at uni, some of my friends already left. Just last week, I was about to buy ZV-E1 until someone pointed out that it upscales from 2.94K to 4K in DAS. Since I only needed a new camera for 70% video (and less than 30% photo), I am thinking of going back to the APS-C eco and getting this A6700.

I think this is Sony's best APS-C for stills. The processor is fast and the AF is the best in the APS-C market. This camera is up there with some Fujifilm models, maybe? But, based on what I've seen, the Sony FX-30 might be the better APS-C video camera. Same 10-bit quality, but it doesn't overheat as quickly.
@DavidManningvlog

I think you're exactly right Brendan, the a6700 is much more of hybrid shooter and the FX-30 is much more video focused. I think if someone is going full on video, the FX-30 is the route to go, but boy do I love having a viewfinder!
