NEW Stronger Alloy Band Wheels, Sawmill Upgrade - Band Sawmill Build #25

Installing new alloy wheels on my homemade mobile band sawmill to replace the old spoke wheels that were quite wobbly and eccentric. These aluminium rims allow also for more blade tension and thus more accurate cuts. This undertaking wasn't just a bolt-on deal, I had to turn adapters/inserts to custom fit the bearings I already use on the mill into the new alloy wheels so I didn't have to change anything else. It worked out surprisingly well despite my previous thoughts and fears. Also later when I adjusted the guide rollers I noticed they pointed up a little - it was maybe due to the derailment of the saw carriage a month ago. Nothing was bent, just the slack was taken out of some things. I adjusted the rollers and it has a new blade on it now so it should make near perfect cuts from now on. One more thing that got done was the stupid height adjustment hand crank system that only allowed me to cut material with 30 mm increment. I modified a hand winch to replace it and now every click on the winch equals to 1 mm. So I can cut material down to 1 mm in thickness. Theoretically. :D Thanks for watching and stay tuned for future videos. Cheers!

So what about the paint? Most of the material I used for this mill was kept outside in the rain and snow years before turning it into a mill and nothing happened. Hell, the material I made the blade guards out of has been outside under a tree for over three decades - still in usable condition. What I'm trying to say is I'm not gonna paint it at the moment - it's too cold here for the paint to cure and too wet to even apply it. This mill is not gonna turn into a heap of rust within the next 6 months - that's when I'm planning on painting it eventually - May 2019. It's not gonna turn into a heap of rust even within the next 6 years so no worries, people!

For those crying about the paint, can you say Rat Rod saw mill. Some people would use it as is. ( including me) My question was why the wheel swap, but that was pointed out. A great thanks for building it from a few folks in the USA.

I see you upgraded the coolant toothbrush too! Will be interested to see how well the new wheels perform. One objection to using tires I've heard is that you can never get enough tension because of the air pressure in the tires isn't enough to offset things. The new wheels will take out spoke give but will still leave tire give. You haven't mentioned that issue before so I am assuming that it's no problem. Thanks again for posting. You are always an inspriation.

Before you put paint on the iron work, paint it with ferric chloride. This will convert the rust into a nonferrous skin, saves you removing the rust, except the loose stuff, and stops further rust.

Looks great Donn. I hope the “new” wheels make an improvement. The winch certainly should. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 It is funny how “Hey Donn. You put the wheel on backwards.” becomes “You triggered my OCD.” No wonder the world is messed up. 90% of the people think they have OCD because a backwards wheel “triggered” them. 😂🤣

Donn am I correct to say it was *near* the time of this build when you were married? In one of the first series I watched [4x4 trailer or UTV], you mentioned your wife and I noticed your wedding ring. In the beginning of this series approx 2-3 yrs earlier, I noticed you didn't have a wedding; well until now. No biggy, I just noticed. Btw, I think people want you to paint it b/c it's like watching you paint a great picture, then mount it in the wrong frame. 🤔 😕 Anywho seriously, like the rest of your builds, it's great having seen it come together. God bless.

May be a dumb question but as most sawmills run on metal wheels, why bother with the tires? Couldn't you just flatten the inside of the rim and run it directly on the metal? That way you can get more tension on the blade, right? What am I missing?

impossible 9 I built a bandsaw mill using motorcycle wheels and swing arms welded together, I have been running it for about 4 years now and it’s been fine. I have replaced the the wheel bearings once, but the ones that went out where stock and installed sometime back in the early 80s. The wheel bearings are cheap and even if you had to replace them once a year you would get far more lumber milled in that year then the $20 it would cost in bearings. Take care. Ps Good job on your mill! It’s awesome being able to cut your own lumber :)

How bad is the wear on the back portion of the blade guides, since with just the flat surface they are rubbing so much against the back of the blade? or for that matter is it wearing down the back of the blade?

The main reason for this mod was the eccentric properties of the spoke wheels of the USSR made IZ Jupiter motorcycle which made the blade vibrate and undulate. Also they had some flex in them - I could hear the spokes squeak. This mod took care of those problems.
