The Tesla Model Y has finally landed here in the UK, and it's the model that will become Tesla's biggest seller by far. It promises all the features of the Model 3, but offers more space, more versatility, and the ability to conquer more of what life might throw at it.
The new Tesla Model Y faces dozens of electric SUV rivals: the Ford Mustang Mach E, VW ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, Audi Q4 E-tron, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. So how does it stack up against the competition?

My thoughts about Tesla changed after my first test drive of model 3. I then bought my first model y September of 2020. Best purchase of my life. I recommend anyone who has doubts about Tesla to at least do a test drive. Reading and watching others opinion is very different from what tesla feels like in real life.

I'd recommend people try other EV's too. Lots of alternatives available now. Tesla have led the way on the tech etc and has a strong brand but it's too easy to fall into the trap of buying a worse product (as complete package) due to branding. Not saying that's the case but some really good alternatives now so worth testing a few to get a feel for the way they drive, quality etc.

Interesting that you like driving the Tesla, I took a model 3 for a test drive recently & really didn’t enjoy it. Having driven the Ioniq 5, ID3, i3 previously, The inability to have anything other than 1 pedal driving was a real put-off. I like to be able to adjust the amount of regen when I lift my foot off the accelerator, no coasting allowed in a Tesla
@Eagles_Eye
@Eagles_Eye 2 жыл бұрын
Because coasting was meant for Ice vehicles to be more efficient. Where as for an EV it’s efficient to regenerate the energy instead of throwing it away and using the brakes alone. It makes no sense to NOT capture that energy.

The suspension feels materially softer when using 19 inch wheels, which is the better choice for the Y. The turbine wheels in your Y are a sport wheel, which I agree don't belong on an SUV, and make the ride too harsh. But you should know that, on every Tesla, you can change the responsiveness of the steering. It's a simple setting you can change, and can even be done while driving. Lastly, you can also change the amount of regen you get from accelerator pedal. This is also a setting. I think the Tesla one pedal driving is marvelous.

I think his comment about regenerative braking was that in some EVs (eg Chevy Bolt) you can pull a paddle behind the steering wheel to activate regenerative braking so that when you lift off the accelerator you can Coast but then when you want to return to regenerative breaking you can activate it without having to go into some menu to adjust it on the touch screen.

Well said. With the Y having been out in the US for well over a year now, those of us here know exactly what you said above. I got the LR with 19” wheels, which is the default. I changed to aftermarket 19” wheels that look more like the 20” wheels because I prefer the look, but the 19” has helped me avoid the bumpiness. I live in the Washington DC metro area, where roads are really not great. Lots of potholes, etc, and the ride is fine. There are also now a few options for 3rd party adjustable suspensions that sort out the ride if you insist on getting the larger wheels.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the paddles on the steering wheel for regen. I think it's actually a huge positive to use your foot and only your one foot to control speed right exactly where you want it. In most coasting situations where you want to maintain speed your foot really doesn't move. It just sort of holds in place at the speed you want to coast. I don't bother to check but you can confirm you are coasting by looking at the power meter to see that you are basically not adding power but not regaining power either. Once you get used to it you actually stop thinking about it and it becomes this one simple connection to your brain and coasting becomes second nature. One foot input directly to brain for most of the driving. Once you introduce paddles it may seem like you have more "control" but all you are doing is adding more complexity input to your brain. Now you have your one input, the foot, for forward and two inputs, your foot on brake AND you fingers for regen, for slowing down. At best you have two inputs, foot for forward and fingers for slowing. He mentions that it gets tiring having to twitch your foot constantly to go the speed you want. I could say the same with traditional transmissions where in any traffic at all you are constantly timing your coasting and accelerating so you don't have to brake to maintain distance between you and the car in front. In doing so you are constantly thinking and letting off and pushing the accelerator and inevitably moving your foot over and back from the brake to the accelerator. One pedal is dead simple in comparison. But inevitably whether with really strong regen on the pedal or with paddles you will eventually be using the brake pedal in where you just need to brake harder. Then with the paddles you are mixing regen with paddles and foot on brake and foot on accelerator. I have both a Tesla and a Volt and after years of using both I find that in the Volt I set the regen to the hardest setting but end up just using the brake pedal when regen isn't enough and completely skip using the paddles. Never use the paddles anymore.
@cobrachannel100
@cobrachannel100 2 жыл бұрын
I concur. I used to own Model X and there they used to have at least 2 options for regen. I always used standard but I used coasting from 5 mph down to complete stop. Hence, I needed my friction brakes to completely stop. Now, for a couple of weeks, I have replaced MX with M3P. That has no regen adjustments and I changed stopping setting of "roll" to "hold", which now uses regen all the way down to a complete stop. I am used to it and love it. It helps with efficiency and I never pretty much use the brakes (only emergency situations or when I need to quickly brake). Otherwise, to mitigate what Rory is talking about, one can also use adaptive cruise control in conjunction with regen. In other words, I use ACC even on city streets, not to mention highways, most of the time. Hence, one pedal driving for the win.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was reviewed by AutoTrader where they found it has the ability to change regen settings on the fly with the paddles to chose between 1 pedal and less aggressive settings without going into a menu. It's a brilliant function for changing the setting and is not there to adjust regen every time you brake.

I disagree, think he didn't do his usual excellent job here. For instance he has the suspension understanding not quite right - fitting the smallest wheels and checking that the steering wheel and acceleration menus are in relaxed mode would solve a lot of the issues he had with the sportiness; he omitted to say that braking regen levels are controlled through the menus rather than paddles, and at least in my Model 3 can be turned into a total 'coasting' mode ie zero regenerative braking, or made to imitate a gas vehicle transmission inching forward from a stop. Maybe he didn't know, maybe he was under time pressure in making this one, maybe he got lazy, maybe the editor did a very poor job. I'm actually annoyed at Tesla these days for poor service, but i still think this was a bit unfair or non-diligent on Rory's part.

I agree with late to the party for this one, we were considering it but now we have other brands that seem to be a firmer favorite with the family. I know the charging infrastructure is awesome but in the EU the other networks are catching up fast and that has even dampened that side of owning a Tesla.

For a brief period, they sold a different trim for around £10k cheaper, but the range was so poor that hardly anyone bought it over the Long Range. Batteries are just expensive as of now. For the time being, a smaller version of this vehicle, the Model 3, is available for £40,990 with 260 miles of range. It's comparable to a BMW 3 series.

Tesla safety is excellent - one reason I have a model 3 coming soon, but i also have a Volvo XC 90 and it is better in many ways: blind spot monitoring is indicated on the mirrors where it should be (not forcing you to look to the center of the car), it has rear cross-traffic warnings (how does Tesla not do this?), volvos’ pilot assist is rock solid with none of the goofy phantom braking of the model 3 autopilot, it has rain-detecting wipers that work, etc, etc. I mean at the end of the day, I got a model 3 because it’s a great EV -- but there is a lot of room for improvement, especially in the premium car range.

Very addictive acceleration. Performance version for me totally uneccessary. I like the interior but tha absence of any buttons and total reliance on the screen was annoying. Main reason for the test drive is I have an X on order and zero idea when I’m likely to get it. Not sure on the Y. Ioniq 5 drove better and was plenty fast enough. Teslas advantage is the supercharger network but I think I would actually use that maybe 3-4 times a year. Not sure that’s a reason to get what is in my opinion an inferior car.
