I remember when I bought New Adventures In Hi-Fi and I listened to the album version of New Test Leper I was disappointed. But this was only because I'd already heard the Seattle studio acoustic version several weeks earlier that came as one of the B-sides of Bittersweet Me. The album version had none of the beauty of the acoustic version, instead the vocals were more menacing and the distant electric guitar throughout just gave it a more sinister edge. In years to come I've began to appreciate it for what it is, plus this song does have an amazing bass line. But this is just a straight up acoustic, shortened version of the song with an electric guitar overdubbed - kind of what the album version would be like without the bass, drums and vocal.
