Back in 1998 I was a Toyota mechanic, Toyota was already working on hydrogen cars at that time, it's surprising to see it take this long to come to the surface, I really like this concept.

Japan has a vision to become an energy independent country, (they import 94% of their energy consumption) and Toyota is part of that vision by insisting on hydrogen fuel cars.

Nice to see a company not getting into the bullcrap. I am sure they are making prototypes, but to place them into production, they do not want the people to pay too much for new tech.

Toyota are absolutely right, I’ve owned a Tesla X for 3 years now and although it’s great, the range and the time it takes to charge on anything but trips to work etc. are a nightmare. I did a 600 mile round trip last months and had to make 7 stops at roughly 40 mins each to make sure I didn’t run out of juice. Those stops added 4.5 hours to my journey. Cold conditions and motorway speeds just mop up energy and at 65p a kw at Superchargers it’s not that cheap either, I think it was about £140. My friend has just picked up a hybrid and it’s cheaper per mile than charging my car - hybrid is the way until hydrogen comes on line.

Remember Kodak? Remember AOL? Remember MySpace? All the knocks against EVs - charging infrastructure, manufacturing infrastructure, and materials supply chains - apply double for hydrogen. The new CEO has been gradually changing the story on Toyota's approach to EVs. The new CEO has to show a brave face when discussing the company's position. The new CEO can't start out by telling the stockholders that the company has been on the wrong track and will lose much of its market share.

Very smart move. Common sense business decisions. Wait for solid state batteries to be perfected and then jump in.

I drive my 2006 4Runner like it's still new. I love my Toyota even as it reaches 240k miles! I keep my Toyota maintained and it has kept me going all these years. I am a loyal Toyota customer. My previous 1998 Toyota 4Runner is still running. I sold it to my Nephew in 2010 and he feels the same way. Toyota has been loyal to me so I will never drive another brand. ❤😊❤

My 2005 Pontiac Vibe is still going strong. The Vibe was built in partnership with Toyota and is basically the same as the Toyota Matrix in every respect except for the branding.

A Japanese director of Mitsubishi Heavy Industry told me back in 2010 EV's were bogus and until polymer battery technology was a reality, EV wasn't truly viable.

Been working with one of the main development guys from AMG Mercedes and he told me the combustion engine is far from over, many of the German manufacturers are researching alternative fuel for the combustion engine.

I think it is great. It is the real answer to our environmental problems. A lot of states cannot supply electric power now and to add cars to the mix is absurd. I have seen portable hydrogen equipment the size of a 1car garage that could be set up at most gas stations. Another thing is the cost of electric, my bill has just about doubled in the last 5 years. You also have to figure out how to recycle all the electric cars….an environmental hazard just waiting to happen!

Toyota didn't become the richest Motor vehicle company by chance, but because of their immaculate conception of sales and marketing, brilliance and hard work!

Smart man. It's crazy to focus and turn a company to all EV like so many are trying to do, but it's not what majority of customers want, can afford, or that the infrastructure will be able to even support.

In order for us to go full EV we need to make sure our power grids withstand it. We saw in California the Governor asked people to not charge their EVs because the Power Grid could not withstand it due to the heat wave that went through. Also, we need to go Nuclear in our power generation. It is the most efficient in terms of land usage and more environmentally friendly than Solar, Hydro, and Wind combined. Yes, it will produce nuclear waste, but we are currently in the process of making nuclear waste into something useful. Just last year Telsa announced that they are working on Nuclear Batteries made from Nuclear Waste and Diamonds. So in time, Nuclear waste won't be waste. Once we build up our infrastructure first then we should switch to full EVs, but as of right now, Gas Cars are simply better for the environment as much as that sounds counterintuitive.

As a lifelong Toyota owner it's exiting to see that Toyota is going to invest in hydrogen fuel cell EVs.

Toyota is the only company that really thinks about consumer rather than big businesses. They take steps and do so much research, there is a reason why this brand has way more consumer trust than other companies.😇

I like the idea. Might consider once stations are more widespread, and the cost of fuel established.

Right now, there are about 30+ electric car companies including Tesla, Ford, Rivian, etc. and the EVs market is still too small compared to gas cars. Toyota is smart enough to avoid unnecessary competition, continue tapping on the profitable gas car market while developing both EV and at the same time, looking to another feasible fuel source in case EV turns out to be just a hype.

Heaven forbid there's competition in evolving technologies. Seriously, keeping many options open is how real progress is achieved.

This makes so much sense in terms of energy usage that it will be impossible for the US government to endorse it.

Finally, we need more companies making these kinda moves.

My friend in CA purchased a Mirai due to some program that gave them a card for free hydrogen for 4 years or x amount of miles and she figured that would be close to offset a large part of the purchase, basically free gas. The problem is hydrogen is always out of supply and they have had many of times were they can't drive their car until hydrogen is back in stock and then when they go to refill, the lines are long because everyone else is having the same problem. This has nothing to do with the car and Toyota's vision but it is a real world look to where we are now with this technology. My friend at the moment feels like it was a big mistake on their part but the car is decent.

Good to see a company stand up against the EV madness. Personally I'll never buy an EV and stay with the ICE vehicles until I die. It's easy to switch it over to a hydrogen cell if necessary or even to run it off of moonshine after a few adjustments.

Toyaota is great because they take the time to make sure they do the right thing the right way.

That's so true!! There's only 6% EV cars in America! Unless, the electric vehicles were $20,000 and not $60,000+ currently. The US government can't force electric vehicles by 2030. That's 60%+ in 7 years. It's not possible!!! Electric vehicles should be sold, by market demand and not by forcing us into it. That's why we don't wide demand for liquid natural propane or liquid natural gas. Businesses own liquid natural gas vehicles, but not consumers.

Great to see the investment in alternative energy sources. It's a necessity, large scale business strategy is required. Kudos to the frontline taking us to new frontiers. Everything still needs to get more cost efficient before the world can make it sustainable.

A CEO gets it. Embrace all possible solutions until a true standard is embraced. EVs at large scale will take rare metals and mines which don't exist.

Buying a Corolla and continuing to drive it for half a century is the best for the Earth.

In case that is not obvious, producing hydrogen from brown coal (lignite) is not the best idea.

Huge respect for him and toyota! Other car manufacturers are blind or just cynic - there is nothing "eco" in producing, using, and maintainig electric cars.

Definitely the proper shift. I think EVs are NOT the future - and the batteries are the flaw.

Unfortunately, I don't need a car as much as I need trucks that can haul for long distances and heavy loads.

I think the Japanese understand sustainability more than anyone. They have such a small country they understand the value of longevity, reliability and repairability for that matter.

I am thinking Toyota is betting on gas stations to convert to hydrogen, which may be a smart move since gas station owners most likely do not want to see their gas stations go away.

Citgo had a deal with Honda, in the 90s perhaps, to have photovoltaic stations to provide water cracking for hydrogen. It was discovered by the Japanese that in the US, and maybe elsewhere, it was not “politically feasible”.

I’m convinced that hydrogen is the way of the future. In the UK, not everyone has the luxury of charging their cars at home and available chargers exist at supermarkets and gas stations. However, the downside is that when there is a queue to charge your car, you spend more time queueing than charging. An utter waste of life!

Toyota needs to do exactly what they have been doing. I own 2 3rd generation 4runners and 2 GX460'S. We have 1.5 million miles between then and none of them have been in the shop.

I have a 2016 Prius that I bought new from the dealer. It has over 100,000 miles on it now and still runs like it was brand new. I have taken it to the dealer for the routine maintenance, oil change, lube, etc., etc. I LOVE this car!

Well as an environmentally trained person, I must say two things. 1. Hydrogen is not an energy source. It is a form of energy storage, just like a battery. 2. Compared to batteries, hydrogen is extremely inefficient when looked at the whole chain from making the hydrogen to the wheel of the car. Thus, if one wants to make enough hydrogen in a sustainable way, that is not possible with solar or wind. That is simply unfeasible. That can only be done by nuclear fission or maybe in the future nuclear fusion. I think Toyota does not really understand this.

Yeah, that's smart. Its currently impossible for modern lithium supply to keep up with the demand for full EV cars. If anything, keep doing the usual, and wait until battery technology improves and cost efficiency actually makes it a competitor to full gas or hybrid cars.

The Lignite (brown coal) to hydrogen trial in Victoria (southern Australia) spoken about in this video is completed. The Japanese consortium have announced the commercial phase will now commence. The big challenge is that the emissions created will need to be captured and stored (carbon capture and storage; CCS). Both State and Federal governments have spent millions in support of this project undertaking studies of the sea floor in the Bass Strait to find sites to pump and store the emissions. The big question is whether this journey that began around 15 years ago is technically and commercially viable when the cost of producing hydrgen from water with renewable electricity has fallen to near the cost of producing hydrogen from coal without the cost of carbon capture and storage. Then there is the cost of on-going monitoring of the stored emissions. This needs to occur indefinitely into the future setting-up a sovereign risk for the country storing the emissions. None of these concerns have been addressed thus far. Hydrogen is part of the energy mix going forward with long haul trucks and perhaps ships and trains benefitting from hydrogen with hydrogen production and fueling located where it is used. However a fuel cell is a less efficient way of converting energy to an electric drivetrain than storing electricity in a battery. We dont have a hydrogen distribution network; we do have an electrical grid. Do the maths. Then follow the money to see who might benefit from insisting we extract hydrogen from brown coal.

I got a 1998 4runner with 214,000 miles. Bought it new it's still my wife's daily driver. 25 years old and still going. 4 more payments and she's all mine free and clear 😂

Glad to hear this, Me personally I am not going to buy an EV until they get the batteries to where they can get 800 miles per day and have charging stations everywhere including hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, and grocery stores. I have a hybrid right now and that's good enough for me. The reason I say this is that 800 miles is what I can drive in a day. I know this because I used to be a truck driver way back in the day before I started investing in rental properties. My gas burner hybrid can do this even without charging. 800 miles in a day is what I would need to escape an invasion if Russia or china decides to invade this country, so I can escape to Mexico or Canada. All you who have low mileage EV's will be stuck behind enemy lines subject to torture, rape and murder, while I will be sitting in Mexico being very glad I didn't have a low mileage EV.

The demand for EV is only booming because of threats and coercion.

Toyota has always been ahead of the curve. This is the most logical and intelligent POV of the automotive market. Hello??? Not everywhere has the economy to build the infrastructure necessary to utilize EVs. Toyota doing what it does best, moving forward.

EVs are a long way from being viable for everyone, so this makes sense.

Little known are the plants (flowers) 🌻 that Toyota developed and grow. One is for high CO2 absorption the other is NOx absorption. They did this way back in the 90's as part of the Prius development drive.

It will release huge quantities of CO2 when they (the big oil companies) make the hydrogen from other hydrocarbons like methane. It will cost a lot more than gasoline. Compressing the hydrogen also uses energy and adds cost. It will be a continual problem to keep the highly compressed hydrogen gas from escaping and igniting in enormous explosions. Of course, you don't have to generate the hydrogen from methane. You could use electrolysis, but they don't because that is even more expensive. So if you loved the high gasoline prices in 2022, you're going to be ecstatic about hydrogen. Don't be fooled. Hydrogen is being pushed by Big Oil because it will allow them to maintain their control over the fueling of the transportation sector. Big Oil hates BEVs because it cuts them out of the picture altogether.

We drove our 2003 Prius,for 13 years until a deer jumped in front of our car and destroyed it. Sadly it ended the deer’s life. 😢

I believe TOYOTA is really into something there. The latest push towards electrification based on batteries has been nothing but a lazy attempt to incorporate an already existing technology to an extended purpose. But the battery production that we currently have isn't capable to sustain all the demand of the whole world, and on top of that it offers significant challenges in terms of recycling and durability. We all have been through the situation where we had to change our cellphones because their batteries were not lasting as nearly as long as they once were. So how about imagine that same scenario happening to your recently bought EV... Now imagine more than a bilion EV batteries the size of a refrigerator door being disposed monthly "somewhere" because they no longer has any use. How about that for a good hit for the environment? So I think TOYOTA might be heading in a good direction... Anyway... Time will tell...

I love the concept of EV being able to help the environment but my mom has been using the same plastic container since the 80s and we use it for all our take-outs. So I'm just imagining Toyota as something like those orange / yellow tupperwares that are almost indestructible. You buy once you drive it to the ground.

In 2014 when Toyota started selling hydrogen cars, Tesla was selling just ~2500 cars per month worldwide. If hydrogen was so great and feasible over electric cars, then with the backing of a titan like Toyota, they should have overtaken Tesla numbers by now. So what gives?

Japan is the world leader in hydrogen from nuclear energy. This makes perfect sense !

Im glad that Toyota is being sensible. I also believe hydrogen to be a better option than EVs for most people. However, every Toyota dealer i drive by nowadays has mostly empty dealer lots...Not cool guys, figure out how to make more cars so dealers cant gouge the buyer!

I think its smart to diversify their powertrains and not go all in on EV’s. There are plenty of other clean alternatives like hydrogen and biofuel, so I’m glad they’re at least giving other things a shot.
