I know everyone’s hating but I absolutely love it. This is just a direct homage of the 1972 ranger. Sometimes we don’t always have to be over the top in regards to dial design and layout. Personal opinion but always Russell great review I love this channel.

@@KS-vk7cc for me if a premium brands dial can be copied by a homage brand within an instant, it’s not perfect at all! Make it simple but use modern technology, design elements to enhance what a great reference this was to Tudor. It’s all about opinions and I completely respect yours my friend!

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR yes Russell I get what you're saying and totally agree in that instance;however, they're only homag-in off their original design from 1972. Great review and I bought the Ranger earlier today before seeing yours and several other reviews…for me, boring was exactly what I wanted, a very low profile tool watch…my daily for two decades has been a Rolex thunderbird on a jubilee bracelet and have so been wanting a field or pilots type watch…my 36mm Rolex feels just right on my wrist so I was surprised how well the ranger sat on my wrist on the green nato strap…the ranger will now be my daily and can put away my Rolex for those special occasions where a suit is required…

Got mine 8 days ago but with the hybrid strap as the deployment clasp is in the shape of the Tudor emblem, it gives the watch a totally different look and feel , and with the strap being black it actually wears smaller on the wrist. Awesome show as always MWC! It’s a shame you didn’t vibe with the Ranger but you can’t love them all. Big thanks to Nick for sending his brand new watch to you so you could share it with all of us 👏👏👏👏 I love the Ranger. It’s the Explorer for the working man! I agree that Tudor haven’t quite nailed it with this latest revision but I feel it’s closer than the previous Heritage Ranger got. The rough or sharp bracelet is a deal breaker, I’d probably raise that with the AD if it was me. I think it’s a massive shame that the rose isn’t on the dial as that’s a hallmark of the Ranger and they massively missed a trick in my opinion not having applied lume indeces similar to the Black Bay Pro (or the Vertex M100). I’m also not a fan of the whole faux patina lume either personally. Give me stark white! I’m normally a fan of negative space on a dial but agree the proportions are a little off with this one. Tudor normally have whole paragraphs on their dials but here we’ve got 3 lines of text! It’s not an issue for me (like I said, negative space is something I quite like) but I can see how it wouldn’t be to a lot of peoples taste. The price is a bit more than I’d personally like to pay but it is cheaper than the Black Bay 58 and you’re getting the same in-house movement plus a clasp with on the fly adjustment. The Ranger is obviously considerably cheaper than it’s Rolex big brother (not that you can get a 39mm Explorer at retail anymore) but the watch I think it’s actually most comparable to is the Omega Railmaster (painted indeces, fully brushed case and bracelet) and that is almost double the price (although does come with METAS certified movement). As far as it being boring that’s a criticism that’s levelled at all Explorer style watches I think 😂 An Explorer or field watch is like a pair of sensible shoes or a pair of jeans or a reasonablly priced family car, none of these things are supposed to be exciting. They’re a tool to do a job, they’re supposed to be boring 😂 For me the fantasy I’m buying when I consider one of these sorts of watches is that while it is boring it accompanies you on your adventures. Be it exploring north Greenland, summiting Everest or braving the local supermarket on a busy Saturday 😂

Love this Gareth!!! I mean I am a fan of simple dials! They are the best ! I just wouldn’t pay £2400 for a watch with that dial. Tudor was the everymans Rolex, same case, crown, caseback, bracelet and finishing. It was the movement that made it affordable . Stick an ETA in here and charge £1500, with the history and brand status then I can see it. But this is a watch for the enthusiast with plenty of watches around this value and will have a use for it possibly????? I wouldn’t take it mountaineering or South Pole exploring!;) obviously we’d give that role to the GShocks;) . Nick says his eyes are getting old and he needed a very legible dial HAHAHA!:) well he’s got one here!

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Totally see where you’re coming from there MWC. It is a lot of money for such a basic looking watch, no doubt. I’d much prefer it if Tudor was still more like what you described just as I’d prefer if Rolex was a bit more tool watch focused and less luxury but what do I know 🤷‍♂️😂 They seem to be doing alright for themselves despite what I think 😂 I’m trying to decide if I go for the Ranger or not 😬 Since the 39mm Explorer is off the table (I know you can get them grey/secondhand but even if they weren’t priced so high above retail, I’d want to buy a Rolex new, y’know?) the Ranger is so close to what I want it feels like I “should” be knocking down the door of my nearest Tudor AD but I’m not sure 🤔 That probably speaks volumes really. I’m in no rush either way.

I found one last Saturday- probably the only one in the city. Anyway, I like the minimalist printed dial. The lume diff is not that noticeable and may have been intentional. I’m really hoping other color ways come out for this. I like the size and smooth sided bracelet. I wish they would yellow or white the lume a bit more because the greenish look is a little odd. Also, hope the quick adjust clasp comes to all the models. I’ve had my eye on a 58 for a longgg time and that clasp would seal the deal for me.

Isn't it nice on some level to be able to buy a watch with a plain dial? I wonder if Marie Kondo approves. It's got a good power reserve, a robust movement, super easy to read the time, and it's pretty accurate - sounds like the perfect watch...for me. I have an 8 inch wrist so even the 39mm works. The hand color differential is odd. Lastly, I enjoy your reviews.

Tried it on today. Something about the bracelet didn’t feel right: too sharp and also a bit light and cheap feeling which really surprised me from Tudor. I noticed out of the 3 Rangers in the display case, one of them had an hour hand which clearly a different colour to the other 2. Maybe they had production problems getting the lume consistent? 🤔 The salesman said it was probably because it was right next to the light inside, shining directly onto it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Personally, I prefer the 41mm Heritage Ranger with its Tudor Rose logo and dial text. I actually use it as a field watch in my work, which it has done with aplomb. It has a basic movement that is cheap to service, bears its scuffs and scratches proudly and, with its drilled lugs, is a strap monster. The new 39mm Ranger is definitely more of a ‘desk fieldie’. I like it, nonetheless.
@MrGheath

Agreed - people make too big of a deal out of the 41mm size. The 41mm Ranger will be modern classic with it's domed dial, hand painted lume, and smiley face. It's not perfect, but it's close. Sure I wish it was a bit smaller, but it wears quite well on even small wrists.

I disagree with your review findings. You cant compare the ranger with the black bay. Its a 50 % difference in price. I think the plain look is the plan. I see no problem with the printed lume. The 39mm size I think is great for a man. Give the dial good legibility. Id say maybe it should be slightly cheaper bust aside from that I think its pretty good value for money. You criticise the plainess but admit its a tool watch. Normally plain and tool watch are in the same check boxes. I think your review is a bit overthought

Anthony if that watch was a grand I’d say great. It’s a luxury watch, the black bay 36 and 41 is cheap and look like luxury watches? It’s not just a comparison. My review was done before the 2 price increases also . I bought my 58 in 2020 for 2700 the Ranger is 2400? The only value I see is the movement inside but of course if you like the watch that is all that matters. I’ve held a lot of luxury watches and this was the first time I felt like …… no way I would pay for that !?

This kind of honesty (without intentionally trying to be controversial) is what I come here to get. I hadn't even noticed the mismatched hands lume vs. the indices. I don't like the colour much. Give me white, or even the tan lume of the BB Pro. You called said it well with the blocky Vertex numeral comparison. That would have been a game changer if they had made all the markers out of the ceramic lume from the BB Pro. It surely would have gotten a better lume score. It sure would have given it a modern twist, without ruining the overall vintage aesthetic. Thanks for calling out the sharp edge of the bracelet. I hadn't heard that. The negative space doesn't bother me much, but this is one time where Chronometer Officially Certified would have been appreciated. I get it though, they were trying to go for that vintage Ranger dial, which looked like that. I am fine with a 39mm field watch, and wish Rolex had continued on with the brilliant fitting 39mm Explorer. However, 38mm would have been excellent. I do love something like the 38mm Seiko SPB155 Alpinist, which even wears well on my 18.4cm wrist. I don't think 36 is needed as much with the Black Bay 36 line available already. A 38 would have filled in perfectly between the BB36 and BB41. Tudor, please roll that T-fit clasp out across all of your tool watch models (anything with Black Bay in the name that's not got it now). That would be a great differentiator from a lot of brands. As always, I love your wife's comments. Always good for a laugh, and she's not often wrong.

I love your channel, I've been subscribed for a long time. My only criticism would be regarding the "dictatorship of small wrists", a larger watch may not be perfect for your wrist size, you may even prefer a smaller one, but this is not a defect of the watch but a characteristic. Teddy Baldassarre also has a small wrist and reviews watches of various sizes, but he doesn't criticize the size of the watches, he just reports that such a dimension restricts the use to wrists smaller than the measurement "X", for example. A much more comprehensive approach. That would be my complaint, but I love your channel and its craziness, keep up the great work.

MR K!! Thank you very much for your honest comments here! Obviously if your thinking of buying a watch you should watch 5/10 others to get a balanced opinion. Also see the watch on different sized wrists . I usually review watches I am interested in and that usually means they wear well for a dude with my sized wrist. I appreciate Teddy’s work to but he’s trying to sell watches a lot of the time on his channel/website. Selling watches and reviewing them maybe seen as an even more pro biased opinion than a wrist size. I am not owned by a brand, nor am I told what to say or do. I do this out of love earning hardly anything for the hours I put in. Love these kind of comments MR K as it helps me improve week after week

The red seconds hands on the old watch gives my watch a little pop and on the new watch, the tip is more like a fizzle. The in-house movement with the 70hr reserve is fabulous!!!!! The price jump is only $50 over the older model. Now that I think of it....I may breakdown and get the newer watch.....

Timing, I JUST bought the previous 41mm version of the Ranger. I'd been watching them for 6 months or so and values had been low. Just as they were starting to go up I was able to snag mine. I could tell by the strap adjustment that the previous owner had smaller wrists than mine and likely that's why he moved it on. Anywayz, it fits me perfectly and I'm really loving it, but I think you're right just shrinking this down, adding the new movement & bracelet would have been all that was needed. I have to think that the lume issue and bracelet sharpness are probably just teething pains and won't continue long term.

Too plain, too big, too expensive for what you're actually getting - the only light at the end of the tunnel is Tudor are fitting this clasp to more references (as we hoped and expected!). It's dangerous using the word @boring@ with watches, as most of the guru and forum junkie favourites are boring three handers with no date. The Ranger, on the other hand, is a work of art. Its goldilocks size of 39mm with under 12mm height and 47mm lug to lug make it super comfortable to wear. It's the clearest watch I have ever seen. The bubble sapphire and fine chamfering actually made it beautifully made close up. Despite having many bling watch, this is the go to watch for most of my days and travel. Ok how’s this. It’s the blandest way to spend 2.5k on a luxury watch. It is a luxury watch but doesn’t look like one and the bracelet was pretty sharp if I remember. It’s a watch for all those who either can’t justify the price of an Explorer or are still on the waiting list for one and have been persuaded to buy this one. This is all my opinion my friend and I’m entitled to one as are you but having handled many plus 2k watches and own a few, this was the first time I’d agree a San Martin Clomage (on the outside) looks better than the watch it’s copying:/ but listen I’m not having a go at your newly born child! I was super excited when this one was announced. I've always been a fan of the Ranger look (love it's simplicity, love the arrowhead hour hand), and had cost effectively scratched that itch with the Islander ISL-54 (a watch I LOVE!). On the previous Ranger release, the straight bar end links were a bit too tooly I have to say, and I agree that it was too big, so was doubly excited about this one being 39mm with proper end links. But then I heard they used an in house movement, and pre-cringed, bracing myself for the price. I might be in the minority here, but I would've preferred if they used a ETA/Sellita and kept the price down (that's historically the point of the Tudor brand). Doing that might have kept this in a price range where I might have grabbed one, but at this price, for this type of watch I can't really justify it. And good catch on the hands not color matching the markers! I haven't seen any other reviews catch that! Thanks for another great review Russell!!!!

Ok, I came here ready to slag you for delivering what I thought was going to be just another hit piece on Tudor, I love them and own the BB58 and a 79820 "Tiger" chrono myself, so I was ready to fight!! Then I watched and you are exactly right on all points. Although Tudor certainly won't to listen to us, I agree, bring back the 2014 Ranger in 38mm, and give it a quality bracelet like you said. Then we could have a proper "People's Explorer" which is kind of the space the original Ranger was built for.

£2000 for a field watch it’s a total contradiction. watch dealer once told me about a soldier who wanted an automatic field watch to take to Afghanistan. Dealer told him Automatic watches won’t stand up to heavy military use using automatic weapons. Dealer said buy a G shock . This is a field watch for people who can’t read a map or use a compass, just as Submariner for people who can’t swim.

It's a classic Ranger tool watch. On the internet, people always have something to complain about. That's when it's time to go outside or leave KZfaq. Petty irrelevant elements of design, (too much negative dial space?) it's a field watch. Gosh, this younger generation never faced a challenge in their life. and it shows what they think it important today. So soft.
