I think this sounds like a resonable compromise, although if they want to actually let people moderate their own experiences then labeling the 18+ category as "Pools, Hot Tubs, and Beaches" is weird and it's name should more clearly describe what they intend it to be.

It really does not seem like Twitch itself has had a battle with nudity etc. To me, it feels like viewers and sponsors working their ass off to make Twitch realize this is not acceptable for a site such as theirs, and twitch plugging their ears for as long as they can, untill they start losing money and have to make a statement.

I think what’s been the most frustrating of all for me was how artists got fucked over in the process. The reason the meta was introduced in the first place was for artistic nudity and even then it was pretty stringent about no genitals. And of course the new innovations of bad actors PLUS the lack of (or I guess now, DELAYED) moderation on Twitch led everything to spiral down. Idk I feel like these “new” features should’ve already existed on the platform. Lud’s absolute right that it’s very much a “Catch Me If You Can” situation lmfao.

Twitch can say whatever they like about pretending to do something about the sexual content meta they started by drawing attention to it in the first place. Fact of the matter is i still open up their site and majority of the content on the browse page is still "18+..." And all sorts of sexual content. Nothing has changed and its just become the popular thing now to try and get away with it in whatever way they can. Ir feels like it will be a while until this meta actually dies

Twitch has to REALLY enforce that shit, or it wont be the end. Even then, it's insane that that content is on the same website as normal gaming streams. I was thinking about this before I watched the video, and I feel like the only way they could get rid of that content is banning advertising for other websites on their platform. That would come with its own issues, though, like sponsored streams being banned. I think it's just something that has to be accepted as a norm on twitch now.

It's a super tough question: How do you make sure explicit content won't be seen by unwanted audiences, especially underaged folks, while allowing the maximum amount of freedom of expression, when it's hard to define what is explicit or not in the first place, when you have to do all of these moderations in real-time(cuz they're live streams).

Finally something good from this entire saga. My personal view is that Twitch has transformed ages ago (just to the people still somehow thinking it's a gaming platform despite all the categories completely unrelated to gaming), but it got out of control and turned into a alternative soft corn streaming website on some channels. And these "some channels" started to become a larger proportion, just mixed in with everything else.

Am I wrong? I feel like the blurred thumbo is gonna increase viewership (by a small % at least). I feel like if you're a coomer searching for something to goon to, a blurred image that can be unblurred by one click isn't gonna stop you. And once you do open the stream to see if it's sometime you're interested in, the streamer has more control in making sure you stay. Honestly the unskippable ad at the beginning is a bigger deterrent. I can't imagine someone deciding what to watch, seeing one thumbnail that's unblurred but slightly suggestive and one that is blurred and more suggestive, and that forcing the decision towards the unblurred streamer.

Twitch tos does not matter one of the lines says you cant promote porn links etc but they literally have !phub etc that leads you to porn and non of them get punished even if they break other tos rules they get 1 day ban normally 3-4 would get you perma they have 15+ bans

Twitch isn't fighting a losing battle. Twitch isn't even fighting. Twitch fucks around and finds out just as much as the streamers until advertisers (and viewers, but only insofar as viewer outrages makes advertisers nervous) push them to clean up their act. Twitch could easily ban all of these, but they don't care as long as it makes money and isn't enough of a liability. Twitch is further disincentivized to ban when competing platforms i.e. Kick are even more loose because they're less beholden to advertisers in their current expansionist, investment-funded models. The only losing battle is how long until legislation and regulation catches on as can be seen with several jurisdictions passing laws that went into effect this year making the age-verification of actual porn sites more strict.

One of the major problems is that Twitch is 13+ but allows easy access to content that's clearly 18+ to underage users. Those streamers use their platform, as you and many commentators said, to possibly redirect viewers to other content... So, why the FLIP is Twitch trying to control the symptom instead of controlling what causes that symptom, which is the redirection of the users?

Well I don’t care personally, I only watch Twitch these days to catch my friends streams here and there, I think it’s funny when people say that Twitch is a gaming streaming website. It’s not imo, just chatting is the biggest category and pretty much always has been.

Just went to twitch. Of the featured streams, 60% are half dressed women and all of them are in Just Chatting.

Being able to turn off that cancerous category is a great change. I hope they don't make it so regular mature streams have to be under the same kind of filter as these softcore streams.

Just out of curiosity after watching this video I went to the Just Chatting tab and I kid you not 9 out of the top 15 streams in there were of sexual nature. I think this is a very good and reasonable solution. Just have all the smut, sex and nudity in a clearly sectioned off area, which can be turned off or looked up at the viewer's discretion. So that if people don't want to see that, be it because they are underaged, asexual or wholesome, they can safely not see it. If anyone wants to see it they can go ahead to that section and see as much of it as they want. This way no one gets any unsolicited sex pushed on to them and anyone who actually wants that stuff can enjoy it unrestricted. Thus is particularly good for the safety of anyone who might be triggered by trauma, trying to kick an addiction or just be an innocent underaged impressionable child. I want to reiterate, this is very good for those of us that just don't want to see any of that stuff. Which is actually the mainstream majority. Even those that want to see it, most of the time wouldn’t want it to randomly pop up when work collegues or family are around. They would want to be able to only see it when they have privacy. So it is from a viewer's point of view, fantastic to have it safely in a clearly sectioned off area of the site and not have it randomly pop up amongst general content ever.
