All the desired universities and some of the majors have become so competitive to get into that I would rather just attend a Cal State school and try to get 3.8-4.0 GPA. The knowledge gained is basically the same, and I don't think you're at a disadvantage regarding employment as long as your GPA is high enough. With more and more people questioning the value of a college degree, schools with the lowest tuition may provide the highest potential return on investment with less headache.

Definitely! When looking at colleges or choosing a college, I would look into the professors you would have in your major. I would also look into the networking opportunities the college has/advertises. Most colleges also post employment outcomes based on majors, so that would be helpful for students deciding between colleges!

@@rachel_lin Yeah, networking opportunities are the logic for paying so much to attend Stanford. UC Berkeley and UCLA are perceived to have networking opportunities that make them worth paying more for. But in regards to tuition, post-graduation employment, return on investment, and difficulty of getting majors, it's time for the nation to hit the panic button. Everyone needs to start working smarter, not harder, and do a lot of carefully analysis before making important decisions.

**Please note the following majors are no longer L&S high-demand majors: computer science, data science, and statistics; economics (effective Summer 2024); global studies (effective Fall 2024).

How does it work for double majoring? I got in as an econ major, but would also like to do data science or stats. Is that still possible?
@rachel_lin
@rachel_lin 4 ай бұрын
Congratulations!! It is still possible to double major in Econ and DS/Stats. However, as DS and Stats are now in the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, you would need to take the prerequisite courses and submit a Simultaneous Degree application. This application will undergo the comprehensive review process in order to declare the DS/Stats double major. You can find more information about double majoring within CDSS at this website: data.berkeley.edu/faqs-undergrads

What is the difference between high demand and non-high demand majors in the declare process? I am a transfer student who will attend from the fall semester of 2023, and I will declare my goal data science or statistics.

Congrats on your acceptance! For the high demand major, you would need to complete the prerequisite requirements and then go through the comprehensive review process (like another admissions process) to get accepted into the major. Meaning, even if you have completed the prerequisites successfully, you may not be admitted into the high demand major after the comprehensive review. Compared to the non-high demand majors, you would just need to complete the prerequisites and fill out some paperwork, then you are accepted into the major. For transfer students, Data Science is a HD major, whereas Stats is not. This website is really helpful so you can see what your next steps are on how to declare either of these majors - admissions.berkeley.edu/academics/ls-direct-pilot/

Where can we find the pathways for transfer students?

The below link looks to be the most updated link to the transfer high demand policy! The website URLs keep on changing/pages get deleted... If you want to hear David, a transfer student, talk about his thoughts on the policy, check out this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pMqjqNOXsdKRnIE.html admissions.berkeley.edu/academics/ls-direct-pilot/

Yes, CS used to be in L&S, but with the creation of CDSS, it is in CDSS now!

Hi, just to clarify, i was directly admitted into l&s as a cs major, so does that mean there’s no longer the 3.3 gpa requirement to declare? Instead I would just need to complete and pass all the prerequisites (C- or higher) and then file a declaration form? Thanks in advance!
@rachel_lin
@rachel_lin Жыл бұрын
Congrats! Yes, you are correct. You would just need to complete the CS prereqs, maintain good academic standing, and file a declaration form. Good academic standing is defined as earning a (1) minimum "C" grade in all major prerequisite courses, (2) minimum 2.0 GPA in the semester that you declare the major, and (3) minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.
