NEW Vauxhall Grandland 2022 UK review: better than a Kia Sportage?

The new Grandland drops the X, bumps up the tech and gets a bold new design. But can it take on the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and Nissan Qashqai?
So what's new on the Grandland, then? Well, there's the new 'visor' grille at the front of the car, which brings it in line with the Vauxhall's newer models, and the 'Grandland' name is spread across the centre of the boot lid. Inside, the crossover gets a two screens, with the left panel getting Vauxhall's new infotainment system which is accompanied by a digital drivers display. You can even buy it with night vision, though it costs £1,300. So has Vauxhall done enough to put itself ahead of its SUV rivals?

This comment will mean nothing to many folk, including the reviewer, but the reason I might be interested in the Grandland is size. We currently have a Ford C-Max, and sadly these have been discontinued. We're obviously not a major customer segment for car makers, but we LOVE the C-Max size and find the Kuga, Tucson, etc just look and feel too big. Then there's a drop down to Puma or Kona etc which look and feel too small. The Mokka was looking OK till Vauxhall reduced its height significantly so we would have lost the high driving position we like. T-Cross maybe, Karoq possibly. And this Grandland. It's 2 inches lower than the Sportage, Tiguan, Tucson, Kuga and generally a little narrower and shorter. So it doesn't feel 'too big', and it may pass our Goldilocks test. Notice, I haven't said a word about drive quality, size of wheels, yada yada, so I freely acknowledge that my perspective isn't that of most people who would read this.

The reason the screen has climate controls on either side is that it's the same system as Peugeot use, and Peugeots do not have separate physical climate controls. The new Vauxhall exterior styling direction is great, I think, but the interior is dull. (That's why I bought the Peugeot 3008. Mechanically the same but really chic interior.) It's a shame, because the Vauxhall interior is actually very good on substance, which makes the lack of style the more regrettable. Let's look at the details, which this road tester skimmed over: 1. Seats. These a genuinely better than you'll find elsewhere for the price (Kia, Nissan). AGR stands for Aktion fuer gesunde Ruecken. It's a German campaign supported by doctors and therapists. Their approval is worth having. If you drive for a living, like I used to as a sales engineer, it makes a lot of difference to not have chronic back pain. 2. Secondary controls. These (e.g. the already mentioned heater controls) are real buttons and knobs, mostly grouped by function. These are much better than touch controls (offered by Volkswagen, for instance). Again, if you drive for a living, you will appreciate this. The reason why touch screens are so popular with car makers is that, for models with a lot of electronic functions, they are cheap. Fewer buttons = fewer separate parts = cheaper. All the more praiseworthy that the Vauxhall has real buttons. Shame about the style though. Now I'm retired, these virtues aren't so important to me.

Just ordered the top spec one as new Peugeot 3008 hasn’t got the power tailgate or heated seats, they cost extra. It also never has heated steering wheel or windscreen. Apart from the pano opening sunroof on my now 4 year old 3008 this in ultimate spec the seats are in Alcantara. So me very happy, same diesel auto still with the toys but cheaper than the less spec 3008!

BUT what they don't tell you is the engine will need a new wet belt every 5 years or 70000 miles. That's gonna cost you between £500 to £1000! The issues will start with a low oil pressure fault. If you don't get it done the Oil pick up will get blocked then it's goodbye engine 🙄🙄

I like the Citroen C5 Aircross more. The Grandland feels very dated, and I don’t think the Vizor has actually helped. I also really don’t like interiors that appear to have one long screen on the dashboard. It looks old to me

Don't buy one, the engine has a design fault. There is a rubber cam belt that runs through the oil sump it swells and corrodes and bits of rubber block the oil filter up, you have to service the engine twice a year but the belt is only good for 35000 miles, once mine is out of the garage next week I'm selling it. Bought new February 2020 it has 32500 miles on it, still under warranty but was refused twice by Vauxhall as the service was due 3 days before I could get it to the Vauxhall garage because of Christmas had to go to complaints Never again will I buy Vauxhall
