Deyanira Prados Castillo "The Three Musketeers" forms part of one of three parts that Dumas did in novels about them; "Twenety Years Later" and "The Vizcount of Bragellone". "Twenty Year Later" happens in times of Cardinal Mazarin as First Minister of Anne of Austria after Richelieu's and Louise XIII's deaths, when they fought in Fronde Wars against nobles as Prince of Condé who tried to impone their will over the young Louis XIV. In the same time, the book tales how D'Artagnan and the other musketeers try to rescure Charles I of England to be executed by Cromwell, and how their mission has other propouse that they don't knew. "The Vizcount of Bragelonne" happens ten years later; when a growned up Louis XIV becomes an absolute king behind Mazarin's and Anne of Austria's death. It also tells the politic rivality between Colbert and Fouquet; how, time before, D'Artagnan helped Charles II to be King in England, emuling this one few tendences of Louis XIV; the tegedy of vizcount himself because his realtion with Louise de La Vallière because the king; the Man in the Iron Mask; and the final fate thar will have the four musketeers. "Twenety Years Later" and "The Vizcount of Bragellone" has many others anthagonists besides Richelieu, Milady and Rocheford in "The Three Musketeers". I wonder how they will be portrayed in this series it it makes chapters based in those books?

Yes!!! But the interviews are so awkward lol!! I think British tv interviews not the same. Or maybe all tv series bts are like that. I love all the zoom interviews that c and out of the pandemic. Actors are more relaxed bc they’re at home. It’s been such a diff dynamic. And more fun watching interviews. Except for graham norton. His show is really dependent on in person synergy. Fun fact: In the books, D'artagnan didn't know English. That being said, I have yet to hear these people say one thing in a French accent. BBC was just being lazy in hiring an accent coach, I guess?
@clothilde1623
@clothilde1623 8 жыл бұрын
Having every single character speak in a French accent was improbable at best. It's an interpretation after all, not an attempt at complete authenticity.
@Mira_Dunia
@Mira_Dunia 8 жыл бұрын
Cloud Cuckoo Yeah but the show takes place in France. That would be like having a show take place in England with American accents and saying, "Well, it was an interpretation." And If you can't get everyone speaking in French or with a French accent, why not get help from French filmmakers?
@clothilde1623
@clothilde1623 8 жыл бұрын
Erin F No, not really, because England and America share the same language; France doesn't. Also, if you are looking for authenticity then they would be speaking in French, not English with French accents. And they would be speaking in 17th century French, which would likely be impenetrable to those not French. Where does your quest for authenticity end? There's such a thing as dramatic licence, especially when catering for specific audiences. It is an established tradition in English-speaking film that period characters in European countries speak (mainly) in English accents. Think about the many, many historical films that have been set in 'foreign' countries. Films like _Dangerous Liaisons_, _Amadeus_, _Romeo and Juliet_ (indeed, all Shakespeare), _El Cid_, _The Name of the Rose_, _Gladiator_, _The Thirteenth Warrior_, _The Man in the Iron Mask_, and, of course, _The Three Musketeers_. Did those casts attempt the correct accents? Christ, in _Gladiator_ we had an Australian playing a Spaniard with an English accent! We have also been treated to Moses, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Robin Hood speaking with American accents. And what about all the Disney and Pixar films? _Ratatouille_? _Mulan_? _The Lion King_? To name but a few. All with American/British accents. Television is the same. Did the cast of _Vikings_ speak with Scandinavian accents? Nope. Did the cast of _The Borgias_ speak with Italian accents? Nope. Did the cast of (the unbelievably awful) _Reign_ speak with Scottish/French accents? Nope, not even Mary, Queen of Scots - hers was English. So I'm not sure why you are singling out _The Musketeers_ for not bucking the accent trend, or why you would expect any different. 😐
@Mira_Dunia
@Mira_Dunia 8 жыл бұрын
Cloud Cuckoo I'm not singling them out. Lack of correct accents is one of my biggest pet peeves in productions. That's why I mentioned England and America. They do speak the same language, but have different accents. Saying, "My production of 'Oliver Twist' was accurate because we spoke English" without British accents may not be completely correct. In fact, I've heard many complaints regarding American production of English shows. My quest for authenticity--which I never said I was on--will end when obvious things are fixed. I enjoy seeing authentic productions, like 'Der Untergang' & 'Au Revoir Les Enfants'. I get they would be speaking 17th century French (like I said, D'artagnan didn't know a lick of English when we first see him in the books). But I think it would be totally worth it if they learned. I say "French accents" because if they can't speak French, *at least* have French accents! You don't have to give up completely. In fact, 'Ratatouille' did have French accents. I thought the main human character was from America. I didn't expect them to have French accents, actually. I could smell it coming from a mile away.
@clothilde1623
@clothilde1623 8 жыл бұрын
Erin F I fully understand and appreciate your points; I just think we have to be realistic in terms of what is produced for mass consumption. I very much enjoy authentic French productions too, but _The Musketeers_ was produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation for a British/international audience, and given the English accent conventionally used in period pieces (as already mentioned), it's of no surprise that they followed that path. The entire _Musketeers_ cast was British or Irish (save Santiago Cabrera, but he has an English accent) - imagine how painful their Pepé Le Pew accents would have been! So what are the alternatives? 1) Cast French actors and have them speak English. But for authenticity, is that really any better? 2) Cast French actors and have them speak French, with English subtitles - undoubtedly the most authentic solution, but would it have been as commercially successful given the British/English-speaking audience? Sadly (and I mean that), no, and sadly it is commercial success that the producers are interested in. Trust me, I do know where you are coming from and I agree with you; if you're going to set a film in the Scottish Highlands, have Scottish accents, etc. I'm simply pointing out that when a language barrier is involved, conventions have arisen to transcend it which cater for the intended audience, and yes, this is at the expense of authenticity. Personally I find this more acceptable than an English-speaking actor not bothering to attempt the accent of an English-speaking character. Why? I'm not sure, but I suspect it's because 'foreign' accent conventions have become a kind of tradition. Hence why Russell Crowe played Maximus with an English accent rather than an Aussie one! Ach it's probably all Shakespeare's fault somehow. 😊

I must say I am not enoying the Arimis story line at all! He was always my favourite character in the book, movies and in this series! However, the moment they introduced his love interest with the queen, I began to dislike them both! Plus I feel sorry for the king! I hope they kill off the queen soon and end this awful story line! Otherwise I'll have to keep fast forwarding through this boring story!
