New Volvo EX30 Drive Review - The cheapest AND quickest new Volvo. The embargo has lifted on the full drive review of Volvo's most important new car in two decades - the fully electric small SUV that has a 300-mile range, is the best value new Volvo on sale, and the fastest accelerating ever made. Oh, and did we mention it's also practical? Tesla rival no doubt, but how does it drive?

Several reviews popped up on my notifications this morning, I must admit to watching a couple of the shorter ones, might have well saved mytime and gone straight to this one. As for the speed, I guess there will be a spate to sales for aftermarket HUD's, but saying that will have to test drive to see if it's a problem, after all never was on my classic mini.

Great video! I really like the car, but... The lack of central speedo (and maybe cruise speed indication) and the lack of physical buttons for basic functions (you can't find them without looking for them) are a definite issue for me and many others I think on many newer cars. The best controls I ever had for HVAC were on my Mk 1 Volvo S80. The designers of the controls in that car must be wondering what the hell happened since then. I understand cost-cutting, but looking away and refocussing to navigate a large screen (which obviously lacks tactile reference points) is not my idea of a relaxed drive and certainly has some impact on safety.

I love that Volvo has finally brought out something that gives V40 owners somewhere to go within the brand. Premium, compact, but at a competitive price. Love the looks, packaging and performance but I’m not sure how I’d get on without an instrument cluster. Will be test driving one as soon as I can though.

Before that, they binned the V50 too. A compact sized estate car, wildly popular on our roads. It got "replaced" by the smaller hatchback V40 (which is not worthy of the "V" imho, as it's a hatchback) and the larger, more expensive V60. They make some strange decisions sometimes

I always enjoy how detailed your reviews are; noticing the little things is important. The lack of a speedometer in front of the driver and the lack of dedicated switch gear for climate controls etc, doesn't feel like Volvo ethos to me. Even the shiny black plastic buttons on the steering wheel (haptic feedback) seems like a misstep. Everything the driver uses while driving shouldn't detract from their attention on the road. It's impossible to perform tasks by muscle memory when the menu system on the centre stack changes depending on what mode it's in.

Really like your reviews. I agree with your understanding on how cars should be. Love this car and the reasons behind the way it is. It really makes me appreciate the Hyundai/Kia group and validates their views on electrical cars. This car is basically Volvo's take on the Kona/E-Niro that were lauched 5/6 years ago. Same exterior size, similar size battery and comparable prices just done in a different way for different target buyers. Really hope Volvo does a C30 style eletric car with 300 miles range their way for those of us who don't like or want somekind of SUV style car.

You're 100 percent correct on that one, same with the electric windows being in the middle too. But that's also to save putting long expensive and easy to fail, but hard to get to wiring looms in the doors like cars of old. Before if your windows failed you had to pretty much dismantle the entire door and surrounding parts, with this you just lift out the centre panel. The only thing in the doors is the motors for the windows and a lock and nothing else.

Johnny absolutely on the money. This ticks a lot of boxes which other manufacturers have overlooked or avoided. Small tweaks such as a speedo in front of the driver would be a welcome change, it's just more intuitive and ergonomic. Small wins such as the electric window switches on the centre console make perfect sense, my 206 had them! It's a shorter wiring loom, you don't have to branch out cables to the doors, and the hand you would ordinarily use to adjust things within the cabin (such as temperature gears etc) is utilised. Makes perfect sense. There's a lot going for this car.

Also, this will be made in China but they also announced recently that due to the good reception of the car, they will bring production to Ghent, Belgium as well because they think these will sell very well, might even become their new best seller once the petrol XC40 leaves the lineup.

Another great review, Johnny. I particularly enjoyed hearing comments from the car's designers. In that regard, had you spoken to a safety engineer I expect you would have learned why the front of the car is as long as it is. Two things I found missing (or just missed): how strong is the regenerative braking (and whether it is adjustable), and your take on its lane-keeping and adaptive cruise capabilities. Regarding the lack of a driver's display, I don't think it would bother me in the least, considering that the current speed is displayed in a rather large font in the top-left of the centre display.

It's a superb piece of design - still full of Scandi chic despite the price point and Chinese influence. However: I'm with you and all the other commentators about the touch screen and the lack of "in front" dash display. I love the windscreen head-up display of my XC60 - and would quite happily trade a dash-mounted cluster for the centre screen PLUS a good H/U display. But without either? I'm not so sure. And I think touchscreen-mounted controls should, by law, be confined to ONLY those not required when driving.

My guess is that Volvo figures that switching to smaller motors would not significantly reduce its costs or the size of the battery needed to keep the same range, so they may as well keep it as is to pick up the performance-minded as well as its primary market, commuters and errand-runners. But as I say, just a guess.

Totally agree. I think Tesla did it for cost saving in the model 3 and it’s a dreadful decision. Can’t believe others are copying. This car can do 0-60 in 4-5 seconds and you have to take your eyes off your line to check speed. makes this more dangerous? If it weren’t for this I would buy this car. Volvo, please change this!

Some moron thought it was a good idea to put the speedo in the wrong place. That’s why they’ve stuffed the car full of tech to avoid crashing as your eyes wonder off the road. (Trust me, I’m a raging Volvo owner, 460, 960, S90, S80) Shame the only thing to be excited about is the 0-60

Brilliant car. I'm glad manufacturers are finally getting the message and delivering sensibly-priced EVs with a decent range. That's precisely the kind of vehicle that will push EV adoption forward. By the way, loved the video also because I lived in Barcelona for five years. I've recognised the scenic road that goes from Barcelona to Sitges, and I remembered how much I enjoyed driving on it with my MX5!

Finally. The fact that this starts pricewise somewhere between the MG4 LR and Trophy is astonishing given that it comes from a more premium car maker like Volvo. Its nice to know that there are going to be options when my PCP is up on my MG4 (as much as it has been an alright car thus far the problems I had on day one have coloured my judgement of the brand a bit). The Speedo, not being in front of me isn't a big deal breaker, I got used to it driving a 2007 Mini. Looks like a decent car and I love the recycled materials, I just hope you can get a darker seat colour as I wear jeans - a lot, thus I have never been a fan of light seats.

I've got a few comments Jonny, bare with me... 1. My 99 UK Scooby had a 0-60 of 5.6 and cost £36k iirc. So cost/performance wise, it IS cheap. (With more range too - I managed 90 miles on a full tank of Optimax once) 2. As a thru and thru petrol head, I hated Volvo's growing up. Then Hubby got an 04 S60 2.0T and it served us faultlessly for 12yrs, flying thru every service... Not as fast a my Scooby, but more than capable and ALOT more comfortable... I cannot fault them... BMW/Audi specs and quality, but without the shouting... 3. I totally agree that it needs a 'driver' display... I code Micro Controllers and I can buy a 2.8" LCD touch for £15, a 7" touch for £60...!! It'd cost a car manufacturer, buying in 1000's, a mere couple of quid to add another screen... Go on Volvo... Do it... Thanks Jonny... 3 of my subs dropped this today, but I watched yours... xxx

For the OEMs it is not that easy.. It comes with a swath of certifications, homologations, market adaptions. You get it cheap privately but the effort to have it approved word wide as a OEM is huge. It also comes with extras (which no one talks about and even fewer actually understand) UN ECE 155/156. So full traceability for changes affecting type approvals... you can guess the rest if the OEMs want to keep variants down as much as possible..

Well done Volvo, a non SUV, excellent. A high riding family hatch with a practical square boot entrance, at a 'good price' and clever, dare I say, sensible design. The german manufacturers are missing a trick with their heavy, overpriced, large and inefficient EV's. Glad to see Volvo have kept indicator stalks for safety reasons presumably, but a heads up speedo would have been nice, but actually, moving your eyes to the left/right slightly as opposed to down, isn't a big issue really. Really good thorough review Jonny, other youtubers take note.

Another very thoughtful review - thank you. So interesting to see how Volvo (and others) work through their product planning in the next few years. To date, the PHEV has often been the premium priced model - XC90 T8 etc. But at some point, as an EV becomes the default option, it will become harder to charge a premium price for it. This EX30 looks like a sensible way ahead, with recycling and cost reduction to offset the cost of rare earth minerals etc. in the power train. I’ve had a dozen or so Volvos, so am probably not the hardest sale Volvo will have to make. But I could see running one of these alongside our petrol XC90 V8, keeping the petrol car for long distance / IKEA / trips to the tip; or until it gives up under the weight of discarded muffins and spilled apple juice.

Best review I've seen so far, and like so many others I agree about the HUD omission, although I suspect people will get used to it. I ordered mine a couple of months back after looking at XC40 recharge, EQA and Model Y. It was a leap of faith but seems to offer cutting edge tech at a sensible price (other EV's being unrealistically over-priced). This will be my first Volvo, after many German cars, and my buyer's nerves are making way for what appears to be an exciting journey into the next generation of EV's .. I hope!

Great review. This is probably the most attractive EV, for a variety of reasons. Like you, I value the simplicity - the elegance - of the design concept and execution. Old Volvos were safer cars to crash, and more likely to do so, cos you could not see out, and they handled like farm machinery. I expect the EX30 is not terrific for direct vision, but it almost definitely handles more like a modern car.
