The hexblade is insanely powerful. One thing not mentioned is that the wording on the hexblade/pact of the blade allows you to dual wield a weapon you’ve performed the ritual on, and summon your pact weapon, meaning you can do some seriously massive damage, especially if you’ve taken two weapon fighting and get can a couple d8 weapons in the mix. The lvl 20 ability for warlocks can be powerful, but isn’t really needed for a hexblade, so if you forgo that for 2 levels in fighter for the action point, you’ll easily be cutting through the toughest of foes in a few rounds. This also means that you can take heavy armor. This, coupled with the armor of hexes means that you can tank about as well as any fighter, if not better, and if you wanted to go this route could take the shield instead of extra weapon and up your AC even more, with a 50% chance of them missing even when they do slip past your armor. Hexblade is by far my new favorite class and as a melee fighter, it’s easily a top contender.

Undeniably formidable. Do you watch Critical Role, Ryker? Travis Willingham's new character in the new campaign is a Hexblade, and he seems to be goin' whole hog into weapons fighting with it.

The awkward thing about dual wielding is that you can only have one Pact Weapon at a time, so although the second weapon benefits from hex warrior, it doesn't benefit from your Lifedrinker invocation, which is a major drag. Using the same logic though, the Polearm Master feat would be hugely viable, as the bonus action strike _(although it's a d4)_ is also performed with the pact weapon itself. You're also able to take Great Weapon Master in order to maximise your damage if you so choose.

PAM is def. a strong pick on a Hexblade. With the Blade Pact you can still use CHA to hit/damage (including that BNS action attack), meaning you're still SAD. And more attacks means more chance to knock your opponent down via an Eldritch Smite for advantage on subsequent attacks. I don't know if GWM can fit into the build though. The expected damage per attack for the Hexbladelock is pretty high with the Hex Curse up, although you can also get advantage pretty easily due to Eldritch Smite. The big problem is fitting 2 feats into the build, but due to the Hexblade being quite SAD, I think it's doable, especially as a Variant Human or Half Elf. V human is a bit odd considering you can't use GWM or PAM in conjunction with Hexblade Warrior until level 3, so I might elect to pick up those beautiful half elf stat bumps and the potential to get Elven Accuracy if I really didn't care about ASIs

Am I the only one wanting to do a Celestial Pacted Warlock Tiefling? Cuz I think that'd be nifty. Have them mock and goad enemies to hit this warlock with radiant with "Stop trying to hit me, and HIT MEH!" **snickers** Nevermind if you take the Tiefling feat, also in Xanathar's, you can have RESIST VS Fire, Cold, Poison, & Radiant for just walking around. And for the RP side of things ... a tiefling getting in a pact with some Celestial to "stick it" to Asmodeus? That's some entertaining shenanigans if you ask me.

Played my first warlock yesterday and decided to be a hexblade. I took my patron in a little goofy route making my former becromancer master trapped in my sword after a ritual gone wrong so my dm and I would have constant interaction with that. But even mechanically it feels great, getting to deal great damage with your blade and curse, my race was scourge aasimar so I could add even more damage to my regular attacks as well. It’s just great the amount of burst potential you can have!

The additional spells for both Sorcerers and Warlocks being added to their spell list, but not bonus spells like the domain spells of Clerics is an issue with the mechanics that is often houseruled to the SAME as Clerics.

It only makes sense, I've no idea why they thought the mechanic would make Sorcs and Warlocks too powerful when compared to Clerics and Wizards.
@jaspermooren5883
@jaspermooren5883 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, especially since they get less diversity and less spells in general now. The warlock is sort of ment to get less spells, because they get all the awesome invocations (though I think that warlocks can use a little bit more love). Yet there is still this weird idea that clerics druids and wizards are on a different power level, which makes no sense and shouldn't be.
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
The invocations really do make the class. That and the unique max-only spell slot style. Your comment on clerics-druids-wizards makes me want to do a deep dive on magic, cross comparing the classes. Thanks Jasper!
@killcat1971
@killcat1971 6 жыл бұрын
Jasper Mooren . If they put more thought into the invocations, if here was more variety, perhaps invocation "chains" like with feats in 3/3.5 you could probably base the class off them. Another idea I've seen floated was more, and much earlier Mystic Arcanum, just to give them more burst.

My warlock is a gold dragonborn celestial warlock and is a "Claw of Bahamut". I have "renamed" most of the lower planes styled warlock abilities into "Heavenly" named abilities. Celestial Sight instead of Devil's sight, Tome of Heavenly Light instead of the Book of Shadows, and "Bahamut's Fist" instead of Eldritch Blast. They have the exact same text, just a different name to reflect the Celestially good bent of the character. The main thing I like about the celestial warlocks is the creative use of the cantrips... You really need to become a master of the cantrip versatility since you only have a couple spell slots for all the rest of your known spells. They get some really great enhancements for specific damage types, and since you get Agonizing blast, and the radiant enhancements for Eldritch Blast and Sacred Flame, your cantrip "go-to" spells have enough kick behind them to remain relevant for longer. Now, what makes the pact magic ability REALLY shine is when you "go off script" add in your first level of Sorceror. Now you open up many more spell slots for use, since you now get the multiclass spell slot chart to cast from. Since you are able to use the spell slots for ANY spells you know, (limited to their actual spell level instead of the pact magic MAX level for each slot of course) Your Warlock/Sorceror has much more versatility now that they have many more spell slots to cast per long rest. Love the warlock content... It's pretty much my favorite class.

Titan Bear Gaming how might you incorporate a hex blade patron? You seemed to watch critical role, it seems like a sort of vestige would be perfect considering the patron weapon could be gaining power from the character and leveling up along side them?
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
I like the shared power idea, and it would certainly fit on something akin to a vestige. Relic/Artifact/Legendary rarity, for sure. One school of thought says that you don't need to explain the origin of the patron-item, just assert that it exists. I think its easy enough to land in your world - an item crafted for a world-shaping purpose (for good or evil), or if a being of world-shaping strength was sacrificed/converted into the item. Heck you could even go Dragon Ball Z style, and have a collection of items share a consciousness and lend power to a follower. :)
@markkane567
@markkane567 6 жыл бұрын
Worth noting that it says you have a pact with an entity that also powers sentient weapons - it doesn't have to be an item. Does that make the Hexblade another kind of sentient weapon for the entity? There's quite a bit of room to play on what you're connecting with and why :)

I had the idea of a Banished Goliath finding a strange looking battleaxe sitting upon an alter in the mountains. Upon picking it up he feels imbued with amazing strength as well as new arcane energy. He then hears a benevolent yet sinister voice in his head that says the power can be his so long as he will take up the axe and slay everyone in the tribe that banished him. He agrees to do so under the justification that if they are not strong enough to fend off the man they banished then they deserve his wrath, survival of the fittest afterall. To ultimately seal the pact between the Goliath and the axe he must devour the souls of those that he has slain to achieve the power and must continue to consume some of the souls of those he slays using the power of the axe. As for his Eldricht Blast I thought it would be cool if instead of a blast of energy he instead fired off a soul he has consumed to deal the damage. This would ultimately build this into Chaotic Neutral Goliath Shaman-like hexblade (pact of the blade).

I don't know if you know this, but the Hex Warrior+pact of the blade removes all conditions for the charisma bonus to attacks (as per sage advice). That means you could use a great weapon or two weapon fighting if you like as long as you have pact of the blade.

I just started Curse of Strahd, playing a Warlock, celestial patron. My patron is my grandfather, who's been trying to get me to fight for good. Started off two levels of fighter, now going Warlock. Really good role playing possibilities here with this patron and it just screams a doting parent like figure trying to guide their charge into a life of goodness and heroism. Great breakdown and really well explained, thank you for this video! Additionally, a way I imagine the hexblade warlock being role played is Critical Role's Grog when he has the sentient sword. The interactions between him and the weapon are gold. People could do something similar to that, a weapon wanting death and the player needing to make choices.

I'm playing an aasimar hexblade pact of the tome warlock. It's actually really cool because even though my hexblade weapon is a small dagger that imbues me with it's power, I can still go pick up any weapon, as long as it doesn't have the two handed property, and use it with proficiency once pretty long rest. It can lead to some very interesting situations. Having pact of the tome gives the access to a bunch of ritual spells, so I have the chance to play an extremely versatile character

We've got a player who is actually questing for his pact weapon as a hexblade, it's trapped somewhere on the mortal plane, but it's because the spirit within it is actually a bound being that wants to be released. Throughout time it reached out (the guy's character is mentally unstable) and whispered to him until he made the contract. Once he releases the spirit the DM has already said the weapon can be his, BUT, that's only if we find it. Our choices may or may not bring us into the encounter with it. We also have had someone in another game try the radiant warlock, he failed as a cleric so instead decided to find another way to gain the power... It wasn't a long campaign but he ended up as Archdeacon

Titan Bear Gaming well. When we first played 5e we realised that most of the time your pact means nothing, so we try and make them actually mean something. Had a warlock who met the Night Queen (a fae goddess in our setting) and thus proceeded to break his pact with a devil to switch over... Completely unexpected. So we spent the rest of the campaign being chased by denizens of the underworld whilst trying to accomplish our goals, made for an interesting game

Its an older character of mine(also all the players and the GM including me were suckers for Lovecraftian horror), He started out as a lvl3 warlock with the GOO patron and he was a Pirate captian that was on a quest the search for and unearthly orbs caled "shamblers eyes"(to gain power for his selfish). He found a and seeled door that was hidding one of these orbs but it needed a human sacrifice soo the most logical thing to do was to convince some people in the city that was near to "help" him on an adveture whitch is where the compain started, after some time on the sea (and many shitty rolls) the ship broke apart and we were washed ashore. We them made jurney across the mountains where we (by cheer luck since we were half dead) discovered a monk monastery where our characters where healed and helped by the monks ( we were on 3+ exhostion) my PC suprised by their kindness decidet to study their ways to underestand a life without greed and malice that he used to live( now 4lvls in warlock and one in monk) and then I continued to go monk (shadow) and then I found the monster I acidentaly created, doing 4d4+dex(5) and then 4d6 each turn on lvl6PC was awesom and one of the funiest character I ever had, there is more story to him but I would be here all day :D, this is already way too long I think soo sorry for the long post ;) also not native english just pointing that out if I fucked up somewhere.

I am currently playing a Dragonborn Hexblade in my DND group and a Vishkanyan Slayer in my Pathfinder group, if you don't know what a Vishkanya is it's a a race of humans who evolved to have snake features ( scales for skin on some parts of their bodies, poison resistance, poisonous saliva and blood, low light vision, that sort of stuff), and so far my Hexblade has reached level 3 and my Slayer is level 4. Slayer is a class in Pathfinder that combines Rogue and Ranger but also has its own abilities but you can also take an ability from either of the aforementioned classes instead of the ones the Slayer has whenever you level up.

Nice video. QUESTION... eventually: 12th lvl bladelock can take the invocation "thirsting blade", adding cha as necrotic damage. Oathbreaker paladin gets to add cha as necrotic damage at lvl 6? Hexblade gets to use cha for both attack and damage. SO my obvious question is, would those three abilities stack, or rather, would you allow it??? I played a SUPER BADASS Oathbreaker/ Old One- Bladelock and his eventual damage was pretty awesome... at lvl 18. In this build it all come together at lvl 19, if this was you rspecific focus.
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah all three would stack. The invocation adds necrotic damage (unique source #1), the Oathbreaker feature is actually extra weapon damage and not typed as necrotic, and is described as "bonus damage to attacks" (unique source #2), and the Hexblade text says that you replace Str/Dex with Cha if you want (unique source #3). Nice stacking idea here James, its rare to find this stuff in 5th edition.

Celestial patron synergizes pretty well with Scourge Aasimar racial abilities. You really don't mind being surrounded, since you end up melting the faces of everything around you with Radiant Consumption's AoE radiant DoT, at the cost of your own health. However, you can then just say fuck you to death, spring back on your feet and literally explode with your Searing Vengeance, doing even MORE AoE radiant damage to whatever's left of the mob that thought they could zerg-rush you. I want a draconic patron! Like a spirit of an Ancient dragon or soul of a powerful Dragonborn that persists because of unfinished business or just Bahamut or Tiamat. I imagine natural armour and breath weapons would be a thing, maybe a tail of claw attack. At higher levels you can shapeshift into a dragon of course I'm spit balling.

Okay theroy crafting. Well more a theme, a hex blade that uses the wand of Orcus and could mutilclass as a necromancer or that might be pushing the limits of fair. Any suggestions.

The trick would just be balancing. A wand of Orcus any way you cut it is either too strong for early game, or needs to have multiple stages of awakening or something to let its power-level grow with the character. Otherwise there's nothing wrong with the thematic idea :) I actually think Warlock is a great avenue to channel necromancer, possibly better than wizard.

I'm playing a hexblade.. we are playing the patron as if my grandfather made a fiend pack & unknown to my family the fiend was trying to make a sentient weapon.. in doing so he cursed me w/the hexblade in order to evoke his blade to gain its sentience when my powers manifest.. I took the knight variant noble.. grandfather used his powers to become a noble family, when I turned 15 my eye turned black w/red iris & my powers manifested. Thus my family cast me out into the world as a knight in order to maintain the families status

My idea for a character would be a Scourge Aasimar Hexblade. The Scourge Aasimars are charged with ridding the world of evil. So my idea was to have a form of ritual where in order to be inducted into the order of the Scourge Aasimar you must be attuned to a weapon of power. And in my characters case, a shadow deity cursed my weapon, so when I grab it to finish the ritual I become a hexblade warlock. I also plan to allow the DM to shape my story. Am I fighting this newly gained power to return my purity? Or is the cursed deity convincing me that it is in fact the correct path to follow him and that the Scourge Aasimar are the corrupt ones? It also gives a cool RP element to the Scourge Aasimars ability to do radiant damage to himself and those around him, so you can be using your new warlock abilities and then erupt into a cleansing radiant burst, showing the conflict within your soul.

What'd b fun is to have a celestial force a pact with an evil human who was saved from death or to prevent going to one of the Hells, and is forced to join the party to become good. And don't even have their free will restricted by the pact, but he just has a few necessary actions he must take that are small, like give some money to the poor (possibly not even on a schedule, but up to the discrepancy of the patron to instill it as a habit), or providing food for orphans, or healing a stranger. Have the celestial be a common pseudo party member who acts as a parental figure. And for Hexblade, you could reflavor it as neutral or good, an have the actual blade push you on a quest to find it, so it can be used again! If it's evil, it tempts you to take, especially innocent, life more often, if good, slay evil no matter what!!! Neutral? Your pact requires blood, no matter the source, as long as it was ending a sentient (doesn't have to be sapient, but it may not satisfy a kill count as fast) living being. Or it was forged by a king's wizard and you now have to swear fialty to his empire and become a knight, subclass with Paladin for flavor/actual buffs.

I have a question about the Hexblade's patron (I cant seem to get a straight answer anywhere, everything contradicts). Is the patron LITERALLY the blade itself? Fjord from critical role for example seems to have a non-sentient blade, a patron who has bestowed the weapon upon him. Or is the blade a 'part' of the patron? It just seems weard to have a fully sentient sword that... well, basically obeys all your commands. Summoning it, using it in battle, stuff like that. The backstory I thought up for my hexblade was kinda based on the idea that a patron can hand out multiple weapons, so I was wondering what the real deal is here.

It's technically not explicitly specified so technically you can do anything you want! :D However, on the KZfaq video about hexblades Mike Mearls explained that the intention was for you to form a pact with a blade in the shadow realm. This means that your hexblade patron would function like any other patron: Granting you power in exchange for your pact, but not directly working with you since it doesn't exist on the same plane.

I can see the Hexblade as a really great villain since a Hexblade could be used as a villain in that he's masquerading as a Paladin that has a few spells granted to them after years of service to their god and could fool everyone with this since they do get some Smites from the Paladin's spell list. With them corrupting a council and the people of a town or city to be corrupt enough to be a playground for their patron or to eventually rule over as their own twisted empire and it would be up to the group to see through the machinations of the Hexblade who has been secretly murdering council members so that he or she can stand unopposed as the sole figure of power.

I think so. If you find that your DM tends to have monsters attack the 'closest' hero, you'll want to pick your engagements a little more cautiously and probably supplement with some of the control/defensive warlock spells. You won't be able to wade hard into front lines with reckless abandon (you dont have the HP or AC to support it) but you'll have no need to shy away from combat :)

If you'll bear with me for a second I'm gonna come across as a total hater, so before I get started know I love the theme and style of the Warlock and even of the _Hexblade_ Patron, I also think _Hexblade_ plays well and is mechanically sound. However, I despise the existence of the _Hexblade_ as a whole. If they had merely added an invocation to allow the _Pact of the Blade_ to use charisma, it would have brought the pact up to speed with tome and the rest of the _Hexblade_ could have been turned into a nice, thematic, shadow-style patron *independent of which pact type you choose.* The way they've made it now it's bloody impossible to justify decoupling the _Hexblade_ Patron from the _Pact of the Blade._ Part of the draw of warlocks is the slew of choices you get to make to customise them, Patron then Pact as style and feel then Invocations and Arcanums to diversify your mechanical toolkit, I couldn't disagree more with the decision to homogenise these choices. In their desperation to improve non-tome warlocks they have diluted this class *in my opinion.* I find myself wondering how long it will be before we see a Patron similarly shackled to the _Pact of the Chain_ Anyone else? Thoughts?
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
I'm right there with you, MrZriael. It is a little difficult to see how the two get decoupled in terms of player selections, and even harder to see them subbing in something else given interest in either one. Probably only a matter of time until we get Chain and Tome dictates as well. I hate to say it, but some of the most recent archetypes and options have felt distinctly 3.5esque in terms of blowing the original class options away, power-level or player-interest wise.

Hard, where companions do exist they are hyper-careful around 'em. I think they're trying to ensure having a companion doesn't become a point in the min-maxxing scheme. Still it feels like they are being way too tentative around the subject, I struggle to understand why they brought Chainlocks and Beastmasters out with the opening book if they were not confident enough in their modelling of companions, in the current, half-baked state these options sit they form consistent points of player dissatisfaction.

Hexblade pact weapons are not garunteed evil. Yes they are from Shadow Fell but they were originally created by the Raven Queen whom is neutral. Now being that they are an intelligent weapon and not one of "good" they are likely selfish or a bit crazy in our point of view. Story wise I have a hexblade protector aasimar that my DM has allowed me to flavor as "corrupted" so instead of doing radiant damage or having radiant wings as a protector I have shadowy wings and do necrotic damage with my racial ability. My hexblade patron is chaotic in nature, hard to tell if evil or neutral. Since its been corrupting my aasimar to become negative energy filled could argue evil however he has gone down a dark path of his own choosing so that could be the source of the corruption more than the hexblade....not to mention the hexblades powers are dark in nature whether evil or not. Regardless interacting with my hexblade patron has been a blast. Sometimes he is very helpful with information and other times seems quite crazy. Although my character has learned that the hexblade won't steer him into his own death as that would be counterproductive for the hexblade itself since it receives energy and souls whenever my character kills something. It should be fun seeing the redemtion evolution possibilities for my character and the effect it has on the interactions with my hexblade patron.

The same way anyone can begrudgingly sign a paper contract. Perhaps they recognize a higher power at work, or are long-lived enough to endure a mortal's well-formulated trap but are lying in wait to seize advantage in the interaction. My favorite one is a deific-level entity trapped by an Evil, tortured or magically compelled to impart its power unto the Evil's followers, causing a strange blend of good and evil typed powers among a terrible cult.

My (brand new) Hexblade Warlock's patron is a Katana, granted by the Raven Queen. My character, Ash, is a female Tiefling who struggled to make ends meet all through her childhood, especially since she caused a fire, killing her mother and little brother. So, she loathes fire. At 16, desperate, she decides to become a hired killer for money. After her first kill, she gets pulled into the Shadowfell, and a shadowy entity offers her a sword to help her to kill on the Raven Queen's behalf. When the Queen wants her to kill, her Katana grows cold and she can calmly destroy the target. When the Queen doesn't like how Ash is holding up her end, the handle grows hot and uncomfortable. With each "guided" kill, the blade gets a little bit darker. Most of her spells / invocations are going to be cold/shadow based, so she can avoid fire (even though she's immune to it.) Her arcane focus is a shard of obsidian, carved into a raven's skull.

@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
Many of the examples given are a little slapstick -- fine if the silly theme is the player's cup of tea, but I'd prefer leaning into the terms of your agreement with a little more seriousness. A glow in the dark nose fails to capture the gravity of a pact with an unknowable power. An impossible-looking tattoo design, demon hide covering a major section of your body, a physical transformation under certain conditions -- all these give the thematic element a little more teeth (possibly literally).

Celestial lvl 6 abilities are lame. Resistance to a damage no enemies deal, and a tiny boost to damage once per cast for fire/radient. Sacred flame is still worse then endritch blast. Would have been cool to see some saving throw benefit like casting resistance as a reaction. Lvl, 14 is also meh since you still have to be unconscious until your turn. Makes you still a sitting duck, and by that time someone will have probably been Able to heal you. Level 10 temp hp is very nice. And the healing word is great.
