The new World Handicap System (WHS) is designed to be more inclusive, accessible and to make golf easier to understand for all.
The WHS incorporates the Rules of Handicapping and the Course Rating System, (a consistent method to calculate a golf courses difficulty), to successfully determine a golfer’s Handicap Index.
The system, which comes into effect on 2 November 2020 will replace the six different systems currently used by over 15 million golfers, in more than 80 countries, to unify all golfers across the world.
Why has the WHS been created? (week 1)
With golf being centred around one standard set of rules governed by The R&A and USGA, it makes sense to unify the previous six different handicapping systems, making for a more inclusive and equitable sport.
The WHS was therefore developed with consideration given to club golfers who play both sporadically and more regularly.
With all golfers only initially required to submit scorecards for 54 holes to acquire a Handicap Index, the new WHS is less formidable for new players.
How does the WHS work? (week 2)
For golfers in England, calculating a new Handicap Index will be front of mind when
adopting the WHS. The process will begin in the same way throughout the world -
by accurately measuring a player’s golfing ability.
From this they will be provided an initial Handicap Index. After a player has
achieved 20 scores, a ‘fully developed’ Handicap Index can be calculated to provide
the most accurate representation of a player’s ability.
To ensure a player has only one Handicap Index, the golfer will nominate a
home club. The home club is determined by the player, but for practicality it is
recommended this is where the player typically submits the most of their scores.

We have had this system in New Zealand for 6+ months it’s simple and works grea. Has removed the burglars from some comps due to now being stripped of 2 shots if shooting 10 under your handicap. Bring it on love it.

Everyone is complaining about handicaps being too low, but when you look at scoring histories it's a different story. Ebay Pete has posted score differentials of 10.6, 11.5 and three scores at 13.1, all within the last 3 months ... so he CAN play to 13. Liam's scoring record includes differentials of 2.3, 3.1 and two more at 5.6, so a handicap of 5.6 is bang on. Golfers remember all the bad scores, but of course these don't count in WHS, it's only the good rounds that count. So NO, the new handicaps are NOT wrong !

I started this past golf season a 5. 4 handicap. End of the season I was a 9.9. I put it down to 4.5 to 5 hours a round of pandemic golf. With this new handicap I’m now a 6.4 just doesn’t seem right. Great video EBay Pete, Liam and the greatest camera man Joe👍👍⛳️🏌️🇨🇦

@Jack Roderickson How did you manage to get 4.5 shots back? That's 45 qualifiers playing worse than your handicap, unless you have received a general play adjustment, but that would only normally be 1 full shot. Your club must hold a hell of a lot of competitions plus the Covid effect this year.

@@Chris-es9hn my home golf course adjusted peoples handicaps because of the pandemic golf this year. most peoples handicaps at our club went up this year because the course was so busy with new golfers and very slow play. So that is why I went from a 4.4 to a 9.9 then adjusted to 6.4, so my handicap I actually went up 2 shots. Thanks Chris

Liam, Your handicap isn't 5.6, your index is 5.6. Your handicap is now course specific and changes between locations in accordance with the difficulty of the course and tee combination.

Hi Liam Great video :-) The new whs is based on an average of your 8 best rounds out of the last 20 rounds you have submitted, then if you have only submitted "good" rounds you will be regulated down whit the new hcp system and vice versa. with the new system it is important that all rounds, good or bad, are submitted so you over time get the correct hcp. Hope this makes sense :-) I’ve gone from 4.7 to 4.1. I have played 21 rounds this year which is counting in the calculation of my hcp in the whs system :-)

I’m 42 and have just joined my first course since I was a junior so THANK YOU for giving me the motivation,, as an adult have played off anything from 16 to 28 depending on what people agreed, looking forward to getting my cards in the first week after lockdown so will let you know how I end up. Doesn't sound like you have 20 counting scores recorded on the new system to have a drop like that? Have you checked to see?

@@GolfNutts well in that case, many congratulations on your newly acquired status, well done 👍 I do know, though, that here have been a lot of errors, all my white tee scores were recorded as red tees, so initially I went from 11.6 to an index of 16.9, it's sorted now though and I have an index of 11.1

WHS is easy to understand. It is not a new handicap, it’s a handicap index, which travels around with you. You then check the rating of the course you play, check the charts, and get your playing handicap. The calculation is easy. If you played at my home course with a rating of 134, you would play off 7.

I've had a look.. Chorlton's slopre rating is 135 off Whites so wud Liam be off 7 there as well?

@@jonathanperry2678 5.6 x 135divided by 113 = 6.69 which goes to 7. There is another calculation for competition play which is 95% of handicap, but at the moment that just complicates things. On a basic calculation yes, he’s off 7 at home. The 95% rule for comps is much less favourable to higher handicap players, as they lose more for comps. All the info is available at England Golf, Scottish Golf, GUI, or Wales Golf, or go to WHS website.

Liam, quite happy with my handicap index. This year I went from 17 down to 13, was struggling to play at 13 so my handicap index is 15. Suits people who play lots of different courses.

Hi Liam - I love all your videos, especially the ones showing you playing with your ‘mates’. My handicap was 10.4 pre-WHS, my new WHS handicap index is now 12.0 which gives me 13 shots off the whites at my home course. I seem to be in the rare situation where my handicap has technically gone up.

You will play off 95% of your handicap in comps with the WHC System, I was off 14 hcap in Oct but now 13.1 in Nov. Now I played in an open in Dubai under the new system and I was given 15 Hcap index because the course is much harder than my home club. I think we have to give it 6 months to settle down and by then we will be hopefully out playing normal golf and comps so by April we can roll with it

I’ve gone from 9 to 5.4, not played in any comps this year but I recorded 12 supplementary cards to ensure The WHS could issue an accurate index for me. I think once we all get familiar with it , it’ll settle down and be a fairer system. I still shoot the odd shocker but hey , a bad day on the golf course is far better than a good day at work.😀

You’ll get dropped quick in one go if your that much under your handicap, I got dropped 5 shots in one day because I played 8 shots under my handicap and played so many rounds under in a row

5.0 to 3.3 (I was a 7-8 handicapper for the last 10 years but just had a really good year). I should go up fairly quickly I suspect but we will see. Keep up the good work Liam!

liam i was a 11.3 before the cut, now i am down to 9.6. i always wanted to get under 10 but not by a cut. my lowest round this year was a 78 and shot as high as 96(that was a bad day). i dont understand the system either and i am in the USA. after the cut, my handicap never moved even with 50 rounds played this year and my rounds varied from low to high.

I've gone from a 13.1 handicap to a 13.5 Handicap Index. I only had 5 rounds that could be used. So happy with where I ended up.

Hi Liam. I was 18.7. Now 21.8. Although this year I haven't played much golf maybe that reflects I don't know!, but the lads that I golf with have all gone up. 1 fella from 18 to 25. It's all a bit odd. There will be some crying when our course reopens lol. Hopefully that's next week Keep up the good work really enjoy all the videos.

As has been mentioned in a few posts your handicap is not 5.6, you handicap index is. This will allow you to calculate your course handicap wherever you play. So your course handicap at your home course should be about the same as you old CONGU handicap which I am assuming is a higher slope rating than the average slope rating of 113. My home course for instance is a slope rating of 105 so you would be a lower handicap if you played at our course as it will be easier to play than your home course. It is a great system they have introduced and will help so many people when they play at different courses and help give a true representation of people's handicaps. It is especially worthwhile when you play things like inter-club competitions against other clubs at other courses and makes it a lot fairer.

21.4 was 18.7 now , that’s thru Golfshake . My club handicap is dormant was 20ish about 5 / 6 years ago , never ever play in comps anymore only have 5 day membership . 5.6 isn’t your “handicap”, it’s your handicap index, so your “handicap” might still be 7 at some courses but could be 5, 6 or even 8 at others 👍👍

I do think it’s a great step towards making golf fairer for all. Although, seems in your case that you’re now your club’s biggest bandit... maybe the biggest of all the golf mates! Hi Liam, we have had the system here in Australia for a while. Initially my golf mate and I thought they had us too low but after a while it adjusts quickly and of late it has been spot on! I have found it very fair and eliminates the burglars!⛳️👍

I've been playing in the Netherlands since I started playing again 2 years ago and the new WHS seems to follow the Europan way of doing things. The course rating is the important part I think. No more rocking up at a harder course and not getting the extra shots we probably need for out own sanity. I also can't wait to come home for a trip and be able to just go out without doing a ridiculous calculation so I know my handicap!

Hi We've been using the system here in OZ for a few years now. Don't panic... will average out over the next few months. i think it takes your best 8 scores from the last 20 games. adds in a few calculations and spits out a handicap. At least it keeps the club members out of the process and makes it fairer for all in the end.

We've been playing off the new handicap system in NZ since April and it's been just fine. It doesn't matter if your new H'cap has dropped, it's all relative at the end of the day. The point of it is, you can take your index to any course in the world and get an accurate course handicap for the particular course you're playing.

Not sure when you made the video but England Golf have amended my handicap index 3 times as they update the course and slope ratings for my club. Currently seems to be spot on. A lot deoends on the course and slope ratings at your own club

don't know how many comps you enter Liam, but you need 20 cards in to really get a proper index. they take the best 8 scores from your last 20. if you haven't put in 20 it can hammer you

I’ve only had 18 put in and scores from my previous clue are not in - does that mean I have been put. a lower index than I should ?

@@crispyduck1706 it means that your index will be the average of your best 6 if you only have 18 scores recorded, so it doesn't necessarily mean you'd be lower or higher, hope that helps 👍

@@crispyduck1706 it will work out your best 8 scores from 20 competition round's! Another two rounds better or worse will give you your overall handicap index! You will most likely stay what you are now maybe give or take a little! It's also got a soft and hard handicap adjustment of 5 shots!

In France we have been using an "hybrid" system (with slopes and all but 0.1 points up and getting cut on good performances) before and we use the WHS since January. I've lost a few shots (because my previous index was not really representative as I don't play often in competition). Now it's a bit more volatile (you get up faster when going through a bad patch, but you can get down again faster, as well). I guess you've had a few good rounds and possibly some on hard courses (west lancs ?) as it's only the average of the 8 best adjusted scores out of the last 20, you can easily have an index of 5.9... and get a handicap of 7 from the white tees in many places !

My hcp went from 13 down to 9.8 after the switch to WHS. My local course was Doha Golf Club (Academy). In the summer, due to Covid, I upgraded to Championship Course. For fun, we decided to play off the pro tees (European Tour) and I shot 75😳 So it dropped to 5.7! I'm now at Education City, another European Tour course, and they're still on the old system, which gives me 10.7🤷♂️🤣

In the U.S. we have been using this system for several years. It becomes more accurate the more rounds you record . The best thing about this is that it removes the handicap committee from the picture. No more members badgering the committee to try to get more strokes or bitching about other players handicaps.

Handicap committee would be taking extra shots off in the UK not giving shots back. People will always bitch about handicaps. I’m already getting stick I was 9.6 now 11.7 my mates all lost shots

@@johnnewell3530 the group I regularly play with enter 3 to 4 cards a week. We hole all of our putts and follow all the rules and trust me we are playing for quarters so it’s hard to get anything past them

I was off 19.3. My new HC is 18.6. And at my home club, has me playing off 19. So no change at all, although off the whites I get 20, which is nice 👍🏻

Its not that easy at all. The slope at chorlton is 135. Its harder than you think. Off the whites its almost 6000yrd. But most holes.are fairly.narrow and tree lined.

I'd add to that. Short courses are by no means easy. Greens on the longer courses are from experience easier. The short courses have to make up for the lack of distance with harder greens and hazards.

If the course was easy his hcp would go up on most courses I’m reliably told Holyhead is testing ,I’ve gone down to 12.6 But will play of 14.8 at home course still because it’s tough to be honest I’ve just played shite this year was so happy it didn’t go up more 😤

I moved over to Australia a while ago and they've been playing the new system for a while. I think its actually a lot fairer than the old one. Much more a reflection of your current play. You'll get used to it!

My handicap pre-WHS was 9. At the turn of the year when the system started in Finland my handicap was 9. I have brought the handicap down to 5,3 this year due to 4 rounds of 4 over par, and 4 at 7 over par. The rest have mostly been rubbish. My aim was 80 to be my "bad" score but that didn't happen (the 3 courses I play have a course rating of 130+). Hopefully next year though. The difference I think with this system is that you have to play well to play to your handicap - and you probably won't do it that often during the season. Submitting as many cards as possible will level you out over time since it is only the top 8 from 20.

I was 18 now by stroke index is 14.5 in my club I'm playing of 15.

You will still have to do the calculation. 14.5 index isn't your playing handicap. 14.5 X slope rating / 113 = playing handicap. If your course n tees have slope of 135 like my course does. It would be 14.5 X 135 / 113 = 17 rounded down. 95% hdcp allowance is 16.15 so you'd get 16 shots on a course 135 slope.

Old hcp 17.8 , now 16.1 but at my home course where I played 95% of my golf it’s still 18 so the system seems to work 👍💪🏻⛳️

I was of 5.4 and was looking forward to going up to 6. The new system has given me 2.8😱. It’s gonna be a while before I’m getting anywhere near 36 points in the stableford!

@@johnnewell3530, I am not a member of a club or take part in any competitions and only play the game for fun with my mates, so I`ll never stress as to what the number I apparently play off is. If the new system says it goes up, happy days! If the new system says it goes down, that`s fine too, just so long as I have a laugh while I`m playing. I understand that some people are fixated on reducing their handicap, and good luck to them, but the only time I ever gave a damn was trying to get from a 10 to a 9 and I got to the point I really wasn`t enjoying the game, so I gave up for 2 years, came back playing off 20, having fun again, and haven`t cared since. Only a game after all!

@@jimscott5900 all good when you’re playing for fun. Hcp’s are all about playing against other golfers an a fair basis. When one of those players doesn’t have the right hcp it buggers up the fairness. So you’re all good. Let the rest of us worry about the bandits

Love your channel. Haven't done a handicap since I started back playing late last year. Probably close to a 9. I think if I could play with half of your wonderful attitude I believe I could cut my handicap in half. Keep up the great work and keep playing.

my handicap index is 12.3 but my playing handicap at home is the same 13. If I came to your course my playing handicap off yellows will be 15 so your course rating must be higher than ours. Keep up the good work.

Joined a club just after first lockdown and been putting in cards every week but the club have only submitted my first 3 cards into the system so I have gone up from 22 to 23.5, so going to be called a banit now because my scores have been lower than 22 hcp

When I joined Chorlton, if you were fit and healthy you got 18 maximum and were told you will either go up or down once you started playing comps,. It stopped the bandits and you would find your own level

My handicap prior to WGH system was my clubs and funny enough since it’s launch it’s still my clubs so no effect for me. 🤣🤣. Always love watching the gentleman that is eBay Pete when he’s on the channel.

Hey Liam, in Australia we've been playing to this new system for a while now and it does make a difference when you play different courses. Not all courses are as easy or hard as your home course so it does "flatten" the playing field a little better and it will catch up with most of the Bandits.

Hi Liam, I am a new golfer handicap was 30.3. Since getting my handicap I have only submitted 3 more cards. These were in a comp where the best 2 scores were counted. My handicap stayed at 30.3. Now with the new system its 36.3. I know this is supposed to help me, but I feel as though I have gone backwards in my game. I hope to get some cards in to lower my handicap again and make me feel as though I'm improving. By the way I'm 73 years old but loving golf, and golf mates. Richard.

It's all relative where lower handicappers are concerned, others of your handicap Liam, will be dropped, so in terms of competition it doesn't change anything..It's more difficult in terms of playing the course..

Liam the point of the new handicap system is to adjust handicaps according to their difficulty. Holly head is an easy course slope 113. If you played a course with a slope rating of 135 you would get shots back.

That's not how it works to be honest. Course rating is the indicator of course difficulty. Not slope rating. A 113 slope rating is a course deemed equally difficult to both a 'scratch' and a 'bogey' golfer. A course with higher slope is deemed exponentially more difficult to the bogey golfer. So yes Liam would get maybe an extra shot on a 135 slope but a 25 handicap may gain 7 or 8 shots meaning Liam is even worse off. I'm off 5. If I go to Woodhall Spa with my 22 handicap mate our playing Handicaps will be 6 and 30. So I'm far worse off.

@@Lightandluck 113 is the average not 115. To calculate your handicap you take your index e.g 11.8 times by slope rating 128 for my local divided by 113 which is the standard slope for all courses. So... 11.8*128/113= 13.37 and then round down to 13

My Index was cut by 3 shots as I play a hard course (where the best 8 scores are entered). My playing handicap has not changed on my home course, but it does stop me tearing up easier courses now. So it probably works.

It's brilliant! I was off 19 - all my cards at my club - 5 bad scores in the last 3 or 4 months and my index is 26.6 so i'm off 29 off the yellows! Comps start on 5/12 - Stableford! Let's go!!

My golf is brilliant through 14 holes - i just always blow up on 4 - so the next 5 are all non-qualifying Stableford off 29 i can score 3, 4, 3, 4, 3, 0, 0, 0, 0, 4, 3, 3, 4, 4, 2, 3, 2, 3 - And it's then difficult to beat!! AND the WHS won't change!! WINNER!!

Old handicap -0.2, new handicap index is -1.2 which gives me plus 1 at my home course. Most old world cat 1 golfers at my club have lost 1, 2 or 3 shots. Loving all the videos btw, helping get me through lockdown 👍🏻

Now playing of 17 new WHS was of 23 got myself down to 20 with my own game but with the handicap index for my coarse is 123 iam 18 in winter and 19 in summer still got some work to do happy with it.

I have handed in around 40+ rounds this season. going from 18.0 to 19.2 . some days I play like a rookie, other days I get the ball moved in the general direction more often than not :D

Personally 36 should be the absolute maximum if you can't get on the green on a par 4 in 4 shots and 2 putt then you shouldn't be in a legitimate competition. However You should be able to go higher in your social club so terrible golfers still get to play amd a chance to reduce their hcp

Was playing the best golf of my life and it’s given me extra shots 🙊 removed my exceptional scoring reduction. Went from 10.4 to 11.8 but get 13 shots on my course as slope rating is 128 off yellow tees

Fully agree, I’ve stopped playing in handicap events for that very reason. And giving 100% handicap on partners & skin games is just ridiculous in my opinion.

But with the new WHS they will need to consistently play worse than their 8 best rounds (out the last 20). If they make say 40 points in a tournament, it will take them 20 rounds to erase that again. It can be done, but it will require a lot of planning and insight to their own statistics. On top of this there is the course/weather condition adjustment. This takes place at the end of the day looking at all the scores on the course and changes “par” from 36 points upwards or downwards depending on the average scores. Hence if you are fiddling your score to stay below 36 you might still get adjustment to your handicap.

You don’t necessarily have to play a round to post a score. I would prefer a “tournament only” posting system, which is what we use at our club here in California.

@@ianmalcolm2552 in Denmark we have used course rating and HDC for private rounds for several years. The new WHS starting in Jan 2021 will give some adjustments, but not a lot. Could you cheat under the existing system? Yes and some did although you had to play 10 “bad” rounds to gain a stroke. We have to announce whether a private round is “counting” before we tee off. From 2021 I think it will be even more difficult to cheat because you will have to play for 25 to 30 point on purpose for maybe 5 to 10 rounds in a row to change your WHS.

With only having 2 cards in I've gone from 10.2 to 8.5, it's now going to be a lot easier to get a true reflection of your handicap as you can now put all your cards in and not have to rely on comps. There are stipulations for these cards.

Isn't the aim of the game to get a low handicap? Also what does he play off at his course? I'm 19.2 but play off 21 at my local course. (I was 18.6 handicap on old system but that was with a 0.5 exceptional score cut which disappeared on changeover)

Been using the new system here in Australia for about a year now. On a whole it works really well as your handicap is adjusted to the difficulty level of the course, which creates a more level playing field. It's no fun going to a hard course knowing you have no chance of playing to your handicap that was assigned to you at your home course which plays a lot shorter and easier. Stick with it! It does work
