Yes please. I remember watching watching a documentary about Buckingham Palace and it included the man (at the time) who was responsible for the clocks, winding all of them and changing the time on what I believe is over a hundred clocks. I'm not a clock person but do find these older clocks fascinating. They are really pieces of art.

I think part of the difference in the gifts was how the 2 girls where raised. Mary was a Princess until she was 17 years old. She was loved and pampered by both parents throughout her childhood and still treated extremely well through her teenage years. She grew into adulthood with whatever material possessions she wished for. Elizabeth lost being a Princess while still a toddler. As a little kid she was neglected by the court and her father to the point that her governess had to beg for money for food and clothes. She had outgrown her clothes to the point of indecency. Having such a different background when growing up would account for the differences in gifts alone.

if she was neglected to this degree, she probably had no money to buy gifts this is damn sad by the way

I think the timing of Cromwell's gift, which seems to be gifted before Anne's downfall, of the French King's children, was like a promise of the children Anne would give Henry VIII. At least this is the only sense I can make of it. Happy New Year all and a very joyous and prosperous 2024.

I think the difference in the gifts the two Tudor sisters give is likely due to their age difference. Mary is already grown, giving grown-up gifts. Elizabeth is learning the necessary skills and then gifting proof of her mastery to those she loves, just like any child giving what they can make as Christmas gifts. Have yourself a very Happy New Year dearest Dr. Kat!🎁

I love the thrummed hat - it would've been very warm on a freezing cold day. The 'thrums' are small lengths of unspun wool that are wrapped around a knitting needle and pulled through the stitch being knitted. The ends of the thrums are left in place inside the hat and as it was being worn, the thrum fibres would soften and felt together. I've made thrummed mittens in the past - very warm and toasty to wear 😊

This list of gifts really makes the song “12 Days of Christmas” make so much more sense-I’d always thought that giving someone a total of 23 birds was more than a bit odd, but considering Henry’s various animal gifts, it seems a bit more reasonable

I imagine that the little embroidered bracer for the 2 year old Prince Edward may have been an accessory to the nursery toy collection where there may have been a rocking horse, various miniature replicas of adult items like a toy bow and arrow and swords, typical of imaginative play. Perhaps the little Prince could’ve worn it as part of a dress up costume at that time.

That's fascinating. I think making her gifts could involve a range of things. She appears very clever, but I think this showed someone who had an imagination, skills in the art of needlework, probably art and enjoyed them as leisure activities. I seem to think Mary (Queen of Scotts) also gave hand stitched gifts including to Elizabeth? I seem to recall reading that her half sister Mary had been a sickly child and perhaps she never really developed an interest in the arts. Maybe she didn't have the imagination? She was a good musician.

"...our Lord in a box" is cracking me up! Thank you for this tour of gifts. It provides an intimate look at the relationships these historical people had with each other. Cromwell's gift of the heirs to France is very interesting. I could see that Henry could be a person who was inspired by the success of frenemies (at least until he wasn't, in which case, you should just leave the country), and this gift could be like dieters putting photos of body types they would like to have on their fridge. Perhaps his gift was some sort of inside joke between them that we don't know about. I wonder if Mary's bought gifts, as opposed to personally made, was a result of the physical ailments she suffered through her life. It's hard to embroider on a deadline when you're anemic. I'd heard that each of Henry's children had a color that accompanied the Tudor green for their livery, etc. (Mary chose blue.) I wonder if Edward's was red, as both of these gifts had a ruby. In any case, red was a royal color as far as sumptuary laws went. For her second gift, the choice of a saint gift makes a statement as to where she stands in the middle of religious reform. If this was a novel, I'd say it's a foreshadowing of their relationship when he became king. 💝

I think the "esposier" may have referred to a small posy holder (vase) on a chain. Posies were carried to ward off plague in medieval times and a man would prefer to keep one on a chain hung from a waist belt as opposed to carrying it in his hand...seen as too effeminate at the time.

Thank you for this video! I find it very fascinating to see the gifts given and hear the value place upon them at the time. As for the differences is gifts given to Edward by his sisters, is this perhaps based upon their own preferences and value to gifts. I know many people place a higher value on handmade gifts as they are often seen more personal. It seems based on those mentioned for Elizabeth she gifted items she made personally to family members but perhaps her age was also a factor as she was much younger than Mary. Happy New Year and All the Best in 2024! 🎁🎇
