It is misleading to categorize everyone moving abroad as struggling or hustling. What happens more often than not is that proper research is not done prior to leaving and settling in becomes drawn out when you are unprepared for the changes which will happen. If proper planning is done, you can settle abroad and live a much more meaningful life than in Nigeria. I moved to Ireland in 2020 for a Master's degree in a field which I had researched well into and I am here 2 years later with a great job and my family are coming to join me soon. Proper research and planning and being truthful to oneself can help mitigate a lot of the challenges people face when moving abroad. I work in a very challenging but rewarding field (Sustainable energy) and I am well respected. I do not think it is a one size fits all thingy at all!

Funny video, nice conversation. On this topic, the way i like to see it is that moving abroad goes beyond career the way most people approach it, we are talking about life change for generations behind you. If it will take me to sacrifice my career in exchange for freedom, good & free education, good healthcare, access to wealth, democracy with dividend, not to mention access to hundreds of countries just having a 🇨🇦 passport for my great grand children....Mr brown its worth it...this was my thought before i migrated, and doing tough jobs that i can't do in Nigeria....i remembered my unborn generation after me that will remember my sacrifice😊...and with patience you also can get the professional jobs just like Morayo said....i now work for the city government....there is no way my children's generation will write their history in Canada without tracing it to me.

First person to speak my mind. Doing the odd jobs is for generations after you. I want to be rich but it is not my main goal. I just want to have access to the basic needs of life first, and I struggled with all these while in Nigeria. Like I tell a few friends, if i get at least 20hrs electricity, clean water, fast internet, reasonable healthcare and security, all affordable for a common man in Nigeria, I will gladly return. In most countries I have visited, people do blue collar jobs with dignity because it pays their bills. And no one looks down on another because they wash dishes or clean. I really don't get the gist about respect. Most importantly, let us all follow our hearts. Japa or not, do you.

WISDOM FOR LIFELONG LEARNING When we forget the true source of real success in our undertakings in life (the Lord God of Hosts) and His divine providence for our plans, we become fearful of the giants and the odds. If that is the case, then every other thoughts and imaginations will be insufficient in times of Ja-pa-ing from the forsaken land. Have we forgotten the name Barack Obama so quickly? He also had IDENTITY issues like Femi or any other person of African descent. But Barack had a plan and audacity (and divine providence) to think beyond the odds against him and his acknowledged identity. As they say, the rest is history. In the 90s, Olusegun Obasanjo, one of Nigerias "them-them" invited Nigerians who already JAPA to come back to their fatherland. Yes, many came back to Nigeria and their destinies were destroyed! Important lessons to learn about the jinxed situation of Nigeria.

In U.S, you can become I.T professional within 6 months and be making 6 figures salary than become Medical Doctors that takes minimum of 8 years in school..! Yes Brown is happy in Nigeria as he said, but he need to look beyond himself and put his family first -- his kids future first! Information is the key to success here in U.S. Yes some people that relocate abroad and drive taxi or working in warehouse were doing good in Nigeria before they relocate, and the reason for that is because they do not have the right information to begin with and your host in abroad is another factor.. He or she may not give you the right information, which may slow your way forward down! I have been living in U.S for over 20 years and I know all these things!

WISDOM FOR LIFELONG LEARNING It was a shock to the system when I eventually decided to view the Morayo Afolabi-Brown"s frank and topical conversation with her hubby about the feasibility and logic of JA-PA--ING from Nigeria. The first question that came to my mind was, "Is Morayo still working for TVC?" Her perspective on the topic was intelligent and intuitive. Instead of admitting the cataclysmic situation of Nigeria, the husband kept deluding himself that "Nigeria Go Better." The original composer of that song was killed by the Nigerian situation! The bottom line is, Nigeria will never be better in 100 years. Not with the appointed gangs of pretentious and GODLESS RULERS regullarly oppressing and tormenting the citizens they are supposed to serve in political and religious offices. Shikenan!

Absolutely correct Mr brown, a true nationalist, a pan African to the core. If l had known the things l know today l would have stayed back in 9ja and never travelled. The weather alone, l use to enjoy sunshine without thinking twice about the sun or a sunny day back home, but now in England a sunny day is like Christmas. l am on vitamin D capsule weekly for Vitamin D deficiencies, recovering from covid 19 for the second time simply because of lack of enough sunshine.... People don't tell you the reality back home, all we see is people having a good time and think that's the life, but it's all at a cost.... I honestly don't think abroad is all that we Nigerians think it is, culture, family, friendship is very important not just working and working. There has to be a balance, working to live rather than living to work. Through it all we can only be grateful to the divine and appreciate everyday as a blessing. Thank you.

I have lived in the United States for 32 years - in April of 2022. Although successful in my own right, in the present day United States, I will not advise even a Medical Doctor in Nigeria to quit his/her job and japa. The grass is not always greener on the other side and been in America doesn't guarantee happiness. I know of many Medical practitioners who have been struggling for years now, just to get accepted into the residency program and without it, you cannot practice as a physician. So, look before you leap. To the professionals in Nigeria, if you have good jobs, stay put. To the ones with no education or career path or nothing to hold on to, there are plenty of easy-to-get menial jobs in the USA, if you have the means/avenue to japa.

Good morning, Sir, I would like to agree with you on this. I am a medically student currently in NA and I know the struggles of how many of my senior mates struggle to get to residency after many years of graduating and paying lots of tuition fee which gets me thinking if that is the part, I want for myself especially as a Nigerian with no green card or passport. But people back at home will never understand.
@Koffa03

@@merocode1821 Good afternoon. I'm a female 🙂🙂. Yes, lots of doctors are struggling and some have had to change profession and work as either a physician assistant or switch to Nurse Practitioner. Others do chart reviews for hospitals, etc., until they can get into the program. If you are already in the USA, at least try to get into residency program. You may be one of the lucky ones. Don't just return without first trying. You may get into residency within some programs in rural areas even without already having green card. It will be taken care of, if you marched with a program. It is very important that you get higher scores on your first attempts at all 3 U.S. Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) and be within a reasonable graduate year (I believe 5 years or less) which may boost your chances at getting residency. They frowned on hiring those who didn't pass the USMLE the first time. My understanding is that some doctors seek residency in Puerto Rico as well - stating that it's easier and they return to the USA afterwards to work.

Interesting discussion Morayo as I believe this is what mamy families are looking at now. Yes Mr. Brown, i agree with your notion that it's ok to decide your steps based on your Circle of influence and opportunities, but Nigeria isn't that stable now to determine what this can do for the future of the young ones. I believe famillies looking to move should first sit together and do a SWAT Analysis before making any decisions on staying or leaving Nigeria. And may I add that success is not measured by your professional job alone but how you can bring Solutions to your environment regardless of career and that can happen both in Nigeria or Abroad. You can be relevant anywhere you find yourself if you haven't something to give too. In the UK and US, Nigerians who are making impact in their community as Political leaders, community leaders, Business leaders, career leaders, charity founders, scientists, IT professionals, Religious leaders, Teachers, even care givers and don't have to be in a certain profession as Mr. Brown mentioned. You can become who you want to become if you identify your opportunities where you see it, plan and work towards it.

There are pros and cons to every decision/action. Like Morayo and the other ladies of Your View always say "Do you". My own 2kobo to this 'japa' matter- pls plan, have a few strategies and don't be a stranger in your father's land. I was "shipped out" by my parent to the UK at age 17, turning on 18. I lived the first 12 years of my life in the UK in fear as my parent went about it the wrong but the only available way at the time (sure you get the drift). I must say, I did not have anything going for me at the time hence the "shipping"; I had finished secondary school, studied computing at the time whilst writing jamb/polyjamb for uni or poly admission. I gained admission to a poly doing a course I chose as an alternative to my preferred course. Anyway, coming to the UK, in the first 12 years, I did my GCSE (WAEC equivalent) again, A levels, degree, Masters, now a qualified/ practicing Lead Pharmacist, I have my own family, bought my own house, etc. But is that all to life? Perhaps for some people. Could I have achieved that or not if I was still in Nigeria, I guess we would never know. The last 10years of my life after qualifying as a pharmacist has been to rediscover/reinvent myself and that journey has not ended. Hence, my 2 kobo advice earlier, as I nor my parent had any plan nor strategies prior to my journey. We only had the end goal (have a better life). 22years on and I am still trying to help my parents and siblings whilst trying to reinvent/rediscover myself. You have alot of good/great things going for you both in Nigeria where you will always be first class citizens, as opposed to countries where you will be 2nd or even 3rd class citizens (if you decide not to 'japa'). However, if you decide to 'japa'- go as a family, have plans and strategies for each person in your family (i.e. husband, wife & children). Ensure, you continue to have your family time (higher risk of divorce- but God forbid for you). Much respect and love for you both.

I’m currently in Canada on a visit and prior to leaving I made a joke to someone in Nigeria that I’m going to “survey” the place for both of us so we can decide whether to japa or not as japaing seems to be the in thing now. For me I’d say to each his own, if leaving Nigeria in order to get a better life for yourself and your children is the motive by all means pursue it. Nigeria currently has failed her citizens in a lot of respects: no hope is visible in the horizon, things are getting worse everyday. One goes through the doldrums thinking, hoping, believing that e go better but rather than getting better it just gets worse. I hear things get worse then they start getting better but in the case if our beloved nation when is it going to be? I like what Mr Brown said about giving his children the best so they can fit in anywhere. I have also been able to give my kids world class education and if they want to leave Nigeria for greener pastures why not. For me, maybe just maybe there is that very faint glimmer of hope that things might improve in our country until then I guess I’d just have to sit and wait it out. God bless us all both the ones that have Japad, are in the process of japaring and the ones that will still japa in future.

Both of you are correct. No place like home, but when home is the way most of our evil politicians have kept it, then home becomes unbearable for some that the odds are against. One good leader can make Nigeria that home we all dream of May GOD help the “chained Giant of Africa”

Sincerely I love his opinion, I hold same too technically because I just feel that thought of being a second class citizen, not being absolutely free is just not cut out for me. I love the fact that in my country, Nigeria, I can go anywhere, do anything I want, without having anyone on my tail. Nigeria is actually a place of lots of opportunities. And then I love the communal lifestyle we have in Nigeria where people are concerned about other people's lives and welfare.

Most people don't see the problems as opportunities. They would rather just keep the tandem of complaints. Your mindest actually are one of those people that truly becomes leaders. Conviction and Confusion are two very different paths leading off to two extremely opposite directions

Some Nigerians that are doing well in abroad always use themselves as a yardstick to measure abroad success but on an average level, lots of African immigrants are struggling and depressing especially in a country like Italy, Spain, Russia, Poland, France that I know of. Inasmuch as I'm doing well after wasting several years, a lot of people are struggling in this western world that shame would not allow them to come back home. Inu igbe ni owo wa

Have you noticed anything common to those countries you mentioned? Language barrier! You don’t expect Nigerians not to struggle in countries like this! It all depends on what everyone is looking for, Nigeria is a land full of opportunities same as countries where you can understand their language in all these we should all just pray for discerning spirit.

If anyone is considering Canada, the cold no easy at all o, just bear that in mind though there are so many well paying jobs apart from medical Dr and I.T over here, also being a PR or citizen gives you access to funds to retrain to whatever you like to become, it's never too late to retrain here , the support system for that is great. Your kids also get funds from the government till they are 18yo toward their tertiary education depending on your economic status. Tax no easy sha and access to medical services especially in hospital is snail speed.

Morayo 1:24 a regular job in the USA isn’t $50 per hour. However, a regular job can’t pay ur bills unless you work appropriately 80hrs per week. Most regular jobs is $13 per hour in the southern states and a bit higher than that in the northern states.

Aunty Moray, na me o..."Oga Femi", Your Vet on CMD Road 🤣🤣🤣Mr Brown spoke the honest truth. I have lived in Canada for 5 years, he spoke absolutely the truth. If u ain't a professional- Doctor, IT, Investment banker, Project manager, etc, it's an average life one would live here. Yes, standard of living even on a minimum wage is way better than 9ja, but trust me, if u ain't a professional, you'll work so hard to pay bills that you won't have time to enjoy life or family. Mr. Afolabi Brown, u are 100% on point.

I agree with Mr Brown. If you are this comfortable in Nigeria, then there is no need to japa but you can relocate unless you are ready to retrain yourself. A lot of people go into IT or healthcare. Healthcare doesn't mean nursing or patient care. There are so many areas you can go into, the same thing with IT. Internet technology is so broad and you don't have to be a science student, mathematician, or engineer. You can be part of IT business operations, they all make good money even as a starter. They have Health Informatics, information management, and a whole lot of disciplines. In healthcare and IT in the USA, there is no language barrier as long as you know your stuff.

Mr Brown has a myopic view of travelling abroad, there are so many other professionals earning good money although like he said it takes time to fully settle abroad, his assertions about being a second class citizens is also very funny how many Nigerians are not even third class citizens in that country, no job, no food and perhaps no hope for the future, the long and short of it is do your research very well. But there are Nigerians doing very well in different sectors of the economy abroad apart from IT and Investment Banking
