New York City flood: Why Hurricane Ida hit the city so hard

The remnants of Hurricane Ida dumped record amounts of rain and unleashed deadly flash floods in several Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states on Sept. 1 and 2. The torrent left New York City largely at a standstill, with most subway service limited, delayed or suspended, and a citywide travel advisory in effect.
The remnants of tropical cyclones that travel inland over the central and eastern United States are sometimes marked by deadly “second acts” that can unfold days and hundreds of miles beyond coastal landfall. Despite the lesser rainfall in New York City relative to southeastern Louisiana, where Ida first made landfall, the flooding was arguably worse. This is because the extensive paved surfaces and rooftops generated a tremendous volume of runoff with nowhere to go. Read more: wapo.st/3jEyN5Z. The night of September 1, 2021 I finished my late shift at Home Depot in Freeport, NY. I knew the remnants of Ida were gonna come through the area but I didn’t realize how strong they would be. When I left at 11:00 PM that night the parking lot was completely flooded and it was absolutely pouring. I ran across the lot to get to my car, my shoes and pants got completely soaked. I had to drive without my shoes on for eight miles until I got home because they were completely waterlogged. I had the windshield wipers going full tilt and I still could barely see the road in front of me. It took me two days to dry out my shoes. I will never forget it.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses and governments faced the need to solve multiple, competing priorities simultaneously. One of the toughest: how to keep an economy going while at the same time shutting it down to protect citizens from infection. As some regions emerge from the worst of the health crisis, it’s tempting to think that there could be a return to focusing on just one main concern. But this week, McKinsey experts examined sectors, particularly defense and national infrastructure, where solving for dual imperatives is more important than ever...

@@YourKingJDG I apologize if I misinterpreted your remarks, but am tired of people saying how dirty NYC is. It is the cleanest it has ever been...there is no graffiti on the subways, and the streets are the cleanest they have ever been. I've been there many times, and frankly, am disgusted that people constantly try to dump on NYC. The people, are actually very friendly. I got lost once, and this couple actually took me on the subway and then walked me to my destination. I will forever remember their kindness.

It is also naturally swamp land. Look at the farms that were there originally, there's a photo of NY before anything was ever built when it was a cow farm. The whole place looks like a low wet island. Because it is. For that matter, we like building in the middle of bogs/swamps. Look up the first ever photo of the Lincoln monument. It was placed astrologically. Most of DC was. Also, the grand central station starry sky in NY is from the perspective of coming from outer space. Not leaving earth. They mimicked what the sumerians did, calling us the 7th planet. Because they count Pluto as 1 or planet 9 that we haven't found yet but is ridiculously massive causing the weirdness to I think Uranus is maybe Saturn. Maybe both... There's inexplicable gravity going on that can be explained by a small black hole or a 9th planet we haven't and can't see until it works its way back to the sun. But if the Indian text is to be believed, it is only visible every 3300 years. Due to the vastness of its orbit path. That's enough of a Google rabbit hole lol. Happy learning!

These rainfall rates and amounts are only expected to occur every 200 to 500 years. Yea, right - but the problem with climate change is, when a warmer atmosphere can absorb more humidity, these events become something between 200-300 and 1500 times more likely. So you can now have them every year or even more. Not to mention what an actual 200 to 500 year event would look like with climate change... I dare not imagine. Sadly, with unbridled emissions, I can imagine that we are gonna see something like that sooner rather than later. This is not just a slight problem - this is red alert for the irrigation and above all drainage infrastructure not just around the country, but around the world...

Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy. God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. His glory covered the heavens and his praise filled the earth. His splendor was like the sunrise; rays flashed from his hand, where his power was hidden. Plague went before him; pestilence followed his steps. He stood, and shook the earth; he looked, and made the nations tremble. The ancient mountains crumbled and the age-old hills collapsed- but he marches on forever. I saw the tents of Cushan in distress, the dwellings of Midian in anguish. Were you angry with the rivers, Lord? Was your wrath against the streams? Did you rage against the sea when you rode your horses and your chariots to victory? You uncovered your bow, you called for many arrows. You split the earth with rivers; the mountains saw you and writhed. Torrents of water swept by; the deep roared and lifted its waves on high.

My brothers, this is the power of God and the Qur’an brought it 1400 years ago. We do not invite you to Islam, rather we hope that you read the Qur’an with contemplation and understanding in it to see the truth and know that Islam is a religion of mercy and love, and we are all brothers.
