New York City may have just found a solution to its growing garbage problem. At a grand unveiling in Manhattan the city's Mayor rolled out the household item tipped to start "a trash revolution".
And it's something most Aussies, already have at home - a wheelie bin.

these wheeled bins have existed in nyc for a long time. what didnt exist was the *RULE* that ALL TRASH must be containerized; not just put in garbage bags and placed on the curb.

In the Netherlands we use 24/7 underground collection units. Once a week they empty them 😂😂😂. New York is a joke

I see footage of inner-city areas with garbage bag piles and cars parked on the roadsides... So, the garbage truck will collect and empty these new wheelie bins how? An extra-long robot arm will reach past the parked cars and grab the bin!?!?? :D

@@sheridan713 So they just leave the bin full when blocked by cars and trucks then? I live in the burbs where there is nothing to block the robot truck arm, so I'm genuinely curious...

Great idea NY . Let's spend more money to refit these trucks to pick up the garbage or just buy new trucks . What do you think that will cost ? 100 million , 200 million , or maybe more ? How many trucks do you think a city of 8.6 million people has ?

I live in the city. Our garbage trucks don’t have robot arm. Workers simply get off the truck, pick up the trash, and throw them on the truck by hand. It’s a tough job, but they get paid pretty well. Almost all of them make $100K USD+ ($150K AUD).

I’m an Aussie and they come out about mid 1990’s, before that we had the metal trash cans the poor garbage man would have to lift into the truck . We have recycle wheelie bins too So glad nyc has will get on board with this 💕

How sad I live in a small town in western Pennsylvania and I’ve had a trash can with wheels for 10 years why is nyc so far behind everyone else

I dont see how the wheelies solve the problem. New Yorkers have had garbage cans for decades, doesn't anyone remember Oscar in Sesame Street? lol. The problem is how to organize all the garbage so the sanitation workers can pick them up easily. Usually residents or the building staff put the building's garbage in large bags and place them in piles on the street the night before they are to be picked up by the sanitation workers. . The sanitation workers easily pick up the bags and throw them in the truck. It will require huge number of "wheelies" for all that garbage-we are talking skyscrapers here. And it will take much longer for the garbage collectors to open each wheelie and take out the bags.

Besides the marked for different sorting and recycling bins every household have, my country also got these large bins in every small community or every other city block thats like a small container, but it rests in a specific prepared yard deep hole in the pavement, so its twice the size it looks. we got automated recycling machines for bottles and cans in every store, where you get a coupon recite worth a small amount for every returned bottle or can that is to be used in that store.
