@greatonepro
@greatonepro Ай бұрын
Older subway cars that were dumped were made of carbon steel. The metal doesn't hold up well over time and the panel joints began to rust and became brittle. So they had no real scrap value. Dumping them and donating them became the best option. They went through asbestos abatement before being released. Subway cars currently are made of stainless steel and they have better scrap value so they are sold off at the end of life.

NYC dumped subway cars into the ocean and this happened: 1. Homeless people sleeping in the ocean. 2. More fish performing in subway cars for donations.3. Crime is up. 4. Subway reefs are never on time. 5. No fish understands the MTA Train engineer on the load speaker. Reef platform is very dirty. 6. The last subway car is empty and stinks. 7. Fish at the subway reef stopped paying the fare. 8. Air conditioning is broken. 9. More fish are being pushed into the tracks at night. 10. MTA announced a fare increase before year’s end.

@@SegoMan Okay, here is a couple of things to think about. 1. You are confined to the space you have. So all the appliances, all the furniture, all the standard sized materials you are bringing into the car have to be custom made or will need work-arounds. 2. The car is metal. Which means that winter proofing is a BIG issue. This is going to eat into your inside space. I'm assuming you do not want to insulate from the outside bc then you might as well make a structure from scratch. 3. You will need skilled metal workers and welders. Those ppl are expensive. 4. Just making sure the thing you end up with is according to code will be a nightmare. That is just of the top of my head. No chance a conversion like this will be more cost effective than building a conventional house. Just not gonna happen. Talk to some guys that tried to build homes out of shipping containers. It's a waste of time and resources.

The glass could be left in the cars and only removing the trucks from under the cars and the air lines and electrical. There are several problems with turning these into housing for the homeless. 1. where to put them: land is expensive in areas where there are services for homeless people and middle of nowhere has no resources to take care of them 2. utilities: There is no way to add plumbing, kitchen equipment or sufficient heating/cooling to these. 3. behavior: Let's face it, there is a strong correlation between homeless and crime/drugs/mental illness. Most homeless colonies aren't safe to live in.

I just got an idea of how NYC can take care of the deportation problem with all those violent gang members that have been sneaking in getting arrested and just set free again. (subway cars, bottom of the ocean, hmm?)

Yeah upstate New York or some state in the USA that is not so populated. Canada with its northern territories has lots of places that the homeless could live if we could get trains up there, provide electricity, food, water and internet.

Got a better idea? We hustle and bustle to go to space, but slow to the point of ignoring what to do with retired subway trains! Did we find this metal in the Ocean to begin only to 😢dump it in water. What about the futuristic retired subway trains where are they going to put them? This is a serious topic thanks for the info.

There's so much stuff we can use for housing, that's not the issue. Just think shipping containers etc. The problem is where to put all these housing projects. Most land is owned by either private owners or the state and I've yet to see someone invite a bunch of strangers in subway cars to come live on their property. Also, we as humans have destroyed so much of the worlds ecosystem, it's about time we at least try to give something back lol.

They are worth more money in scrap, but they are a great medium for reefs and future food source

A few reefs will not replace the ones that are destroyed constantly. Could have recycled the metal for something else. But, then again. I guess it would have be sold for pennies to the other country to sell back to us for 100 times the price.

Should probably just not have a city like New York if you’re not going to have politicians that know how to actually govern. That’s New Yorks issue, they have plenty of money, they just spend it in dumb ass ways

They could’ve recycled the steel the wheels and chambers that are underneath it. That is high steel. They dumped approximately $40 million worth of steel undercarriage that the fox roll on. I’m just saying.

MTA should have recycled the metal and utilized it, in it production to New trains. Or sell off the metal scaps and utilize the sale of the scrap onto the bill of the New train cars. Reducing the transportation fare price on the pockets of Newyorkers.

The contracts for doing all this can be claimed at any figures unlike salvaging for metal will go back to the state instead a politician can get much more from kickbacks by the contractor hired for this 'green' idea.

This is just like the tires that they started doing it in the 90s. But nothing attached themselves to the tires. There's really no animal life around the tires and now you got rubber tires in the ocean along the US Coast from Florida to New York, rotten in the bottom of the ocean. When you can send these cars to recycling plants to be shredded and recycled. Because just look at all the oils and hydraulics leaking in the ocean from these cars
