No because the main issue with comparing generations is that the circumstances were different. I mean, imagine if Maradona had the stable life that Messi has had since his debut. If he didn’t get involved with drugs (or as much) because he gets signed by a European club early on and gets instilled professional values. Or if he actually had proper diets and training regimes with top tactical coaches to complement his god-like technical skills. And then you can say the same for Messi if he lived in Maradona’s era. With all the coddling current Messi pretty much needs to perform at his peak, what would’ve happened if he was thrown into Maradona’s era where the facilities were terrible. I mean he may not even have gotten treatment to start his career in the first place. I mean I think Messi is the greatest of all time because he clearly is a better and more complete player than Maradona or Pele, but the only conclusion most can really fairly make about Messi is that he’s the greatest of this generation. Otherwise, it’s just opinion and sentimental value because players of newer generations will inevitably be better than those of the past
