You are correct - this was a fairly simple hold. I find that even with confusing holding instructions, drawing a simple picture of my location, the hold and the fix it references, things become quite manageable. - Martin

I just saw your comment from 3 months ago, must have missed it previously... Yes, DME arcs - I have flown them, but I think they are going the way of the NDB approach. With GPS and SBAS/LPV approaches, who needs DME arcs? I see a return of arcs in RNP approaches, but I am not able to navigate those with my Garmin 530W. I agree with your NYC controller comment. The whole northeast, really. I did not have any issues whatsoever during this trip, everybody treated me nicely and professionally.

Good, you found the info. All in all, not too bad (by large airport standards) except the steep parking fees.

No promises on the date of the video release, but the recording for the next bit airport is already done. For now, I'll just say it was a very large and busy airport, even by JFK standards.

Hi John, thank you for your kind words. This trip last summer was only my second time out to the east coast, and we covered New York City, Boston, Martha's Vineyard, and a couple of smaller places, all over roughly two weeks. Not once did I have an issue with ATC, everyone was very helpful - my only difficulty in that regard was that some of the controllers speak quite a bit faster than here in the Midwest.

he understands and speaks english which is a big plus regarding the controllers being nice. also he didn't slow from the 250 knots assigned by boston center which is a big nono to get out some of the ferociousness. with all the vectoring they really don't like people slowing especially without saying so. 150 to 160 knots on final is quite acceptable for the ILS they normally assign 180 knots to 5 miles out. if you want to get an impression of the controllers in the area may i recommend www.liveatc.net/search/?icao=jfk especially 125.7 which is the main approach frequency for JFK. from my listening i must say JFK tower and especially ground are more likely to get ferocious compared with approach. approach gets annoyed and stressed but mostly that's it. tower and ground (which is a different ATC unit) have some controllers who can get quite angry. but if you are stepped on literally every transmission it gets very tedious. the frequency wasn't overly busy also so that's a plus :) the reason for the hold was probably the weather rolling in and a corresponding runway change (he checked VOR/DME 22L i believe after first hearing the ATIS) that's often used together with VOR13L landing and departing 13R. switching to the ILS22L means LGA can't do certain departure/approach patterns because the VOR approach course is further east compared to the ILS.

Interesting that you say that. I've been flying all over the US for twenty years, including several of the largest airports. I've never been turned down. The worst I remember was back in 1999 I went to St. Louis, back when that was the TWA main hub, in a Cessna 172. I was told to expect a 45-minute wait in a hold. I said "ok". In the end they worked me in right away, no hold. And very few airports in the US require a reservation today for GA these days.

Yes, holds do happen - thought this was a first for me in almost 20 years of instrument flying (granted, only as a hobby). I was sure glad I had practiced them every now and then when the New York controller gave me one for real.

Thanks, John. Yes, I was in Oshkosh just this year, spent the whole week there for the first time. I made a video recently explaining why I had not been there before ("RAGBRAI vs. Oshkosh"). The ignition noise has been gone for a while. Complete replacement of the ignition harness solved that problem, as you can hear in my newer videos. Regards, Martin

Well, yes and no. Landing at JFK was not bad, but parking was very expensive. What I probably should have done (to save some $$$) is to fly to JFK first, but then quickly move the plane over to Teterboro or one of the other GA airports nearby.

Abraham, I have already had this $$$$$$$ conversation with Martin after he went to DFW. He does it for sport, no matter the cost! :-)

Right - at least in the US, there is no such restriction. Other parts of the world are sometimes different. Having said that, the effort in terms of time spent on the ground and fees usually keep us small airplanes away from the very large airports.
